Review: A trade practice is deceptive if the business makes a misrepresentation about the quality or benefits of its goods or services. The law prohibits business from making false statements about their own goods or services or the goods and services offered by other businesses. This individual made false statements about the quality and benefits of the work and lied about finishing the job, and severely over charged for the work, then refuse to complete the work. Will not return calls, and lied about his address. Took advantage of an 82 year old to line his pockets. In short snake in the grass! Now to top it all off, he never completed the job, repair of ceiling in the Dining Room. I don't know what can be done about this problem. However, James Small, of Mid Atlantic Handyman Services, contracted with my wife, who is a senior citizen, and double charged for the job. Then to make matters worst, he left the trash in the back yard, will not return calls, and the job he did failed, and needs immediate repair. He warranted the work but will comply with this warranty. We have an address for him, but he hasn't lived there for two years.Desired Settlement: Repair finished, trash removed, money back on over charge.

Review: The contractor, [redacted], did not complete work as indicated on his contract. He has failed to finish work as agreed in contract. He charged me $9,800, which I paid in cash to him. He has not returned or answered phone calls made to him. The work that he did do on my house, is unacceptable. I am disabled and was not able to see the work that was done on my house. I feel that he has used my age and disability to his benefit to get so much money from me for a job that was not warranted. I will provide copies of the contract as well as pictures taken of the shoddy workmanship.Desired Settlement: I desire a full refund of the monies paid to him for unjustified, incomplete work and void of contract. His contract said all work will be completed by October 22, 2015.

Review: I had a water leak outside my house that leaked into my bathroom/laundry room damaging the inside walls and causing black mold. Over the years my family have also been sick a lot possibly due to this. I was given a verbal quote from [redacted] saying the job would not even cost $5,000. They attempted to do the drywall inside my house which was not acceptable. They did not finish what they started, left holes in the wall, etc. They were here last on 7-26-13 and promised to return within two weeks to finish the drywall. They made several appointments and never showed up or even called to say why. When they finished doing the outside foundation work (excavation), James Small tried to charge me $10,000 which I refused to pay. I did give him $7,000 cash on 7-26-13 with a signed contract saying he would return in two weeks to complete the drywall. After showing the work to another contractor, I was told the drywall should be unacceptable and whoever did this did not know how to do drywall. I got a quote from another Company saying the work should have been done on the inside (not outside) and a French drain installed to stop the outside leaks. This Company wants $7,770 to do this job. Now I need to hire someone to redo all the drywall and complete the work not finished. Also, where they excavated outside, the dirt has settled and now I have to pay to get more dirt to fill this in and my air conditioner has sunk into the ground and needs more dirt for leveling. I spent $7,000 which I did not intend to spend and never even got the job done. I feel others should know about this Company and how what they misled me, lied about the cost, and did not do the work he promised. I took [redacted] for his word and thought he was an honest person. Not once when he started the work did he tell me I would be charged more than $5,000.Desired Settlement: I feel this Company overcharged me and I should get at least half of $7,000 back ($3500) so that I can get the drywall completed. I also have photos.

Review: My mother who is 84 years old, blind and very hard of hearing had her roof replaced by this company. The contract states a life-time warrenty on leaks.....the roof is leaking and has been for several months. After mutliple attempts to get in touch with this person,James Small, we have had no success. I have grace concerns about his practice, especially with older people. Multiple attempts by various phone numbers, phones seem have been disconnected.Desired Settlement: I want him to fix what he said in his contract. If not I want a refund in order to have the roof fixed correctly.

Review: I am writing this complaint in behalf of my mother, [redacted], a widowed 88 year old senior citizen living on a Social Security survivor's pension and a retured federal enployee's survivior's pension. Her mailing address is [redacted]er phone number is [redacted] began coming to her house and charging her money for contracting work. No invoices were ever presented. Below are checks my mother wrote to [redacted] and he cashed.02/14/2014[redacted] check indicated deposit on roof in memo portion of checkNote: roof was never replaced. [redacted] has refused to present any invoices. He showed up when my brother [redacted] was home on vacation, visiting my mom. He explained to [redacted] that he was finishing up work that [redacted] had already paid for, and there would be no charge. He told my Mom the same thing. After my brother left, he sneaked back and told my mom she owed him another $3400, and she wrote him another check. The actual work performed was that he replaced one window pane, installed 2 mechanical turbines on her roof, painted the parged cinderblocks between the ground and her first course of bricks on her brick home. He told my brother, [redacted], that he also ran 1 or 2 rows of shingles from the bottom of the unraised portion of her roof to the top. Conservatively, he performed about $1000 worth of work, for all four items. [redacted] shows traits of a senior citizen predator and has charged my mom about 18 times fair value for material and labor for work performed. My expertise in that assessment is that I have been in maintenance since 1967, and in rental property management since 1976. I have been writing checks for the very type of work he performed for 47+ years. I know the business. My brother gave [redacted] my mailing address & gave him until July 10 to mail me the invoices. They never arrived.Desired Settlement: Since my mom was charged $18,210 for roughly $1000 worth of work, I would like to have [redacted] return $17,210 to her. I would like his pledge that he not show up at her house anymore, & not solicit any further work from her, even if is through other contractors. Since one of the turbines he installed makes noise, I would like an allowance for the replacement of the turbine, in both material and labor, as warrantee work that I can give to an honest contractor. [redacted] is not to do that work.
