Mike's Marine Repair Reviews (2)

Complaint: [redacted]I am rejecting this response because:
I left the boat & 4 motors, with instructions to have one of the larger motors, either the 35 HP or 40 HP repaired & working & one of the 15 HP motors repaired, hooked up & ready to go. Two weeks later I stopped by & nothing had been done. He said he was waiting for instructions, which I had given him already. I told him again that I wanted the boat with both motors hooked up & running. He went on vacation for 4 weeks and then I tried for one week to find out what progress he had made, leaving messages that were not returned. The next week he said it was done. I picked it up, brought it home. The next week I took it to the lake and it started but quit running. I took it back and waited about a week. He called and said it was fixed. I picked it up again, but it still would not continue running. Would start & quit. I took it back again to be fixed. He called on a Monday, said it ran but needed some "tweaking". I called on Friday and was told not to call again, he was "tweaking" it and it would be done by that afternoon. I waited until the following Monday to pick it up. The boat had 1 1/2' of water in it, which has ruined the upholstery. He said it was done & I asked him to start it and he said he knew it would start & just get it out of there. He got very angry. He had said before that it ran, but it didn't, so it was hard for me to believe him now. There was no reason why he could not use his battery to prove to me that it ran, but he refused to do so. I did not bring my own battery, as I did not want to invest in a new battery until I knew for sure it would run completely. He also told me he would replace the starter solenoid, but he didn't. As I left he said the starter was probably bad. If that was so, he should have fixed it, as everything was supposed to be in working order upon completion. Also, in his response he said he gave me $150.00 for the bad motors, but I have received nothing for them, as he said they were just junk.  I had him start on the motors early in the year so everything would be ready for crab season the first part of July, plus salmon fishing when it opened. However, I was not able to use the boat for either of these items. As things were not fixed as instructed where did my $800+++ go. I do want a copy of the invoice, that I never received.

Sincerely,[redacted]

This is in response to the above complaint number.
Mr. [redacted] originally contacted me in March 2015 asking me to take a look at a boat and some motorshe needed repaired. He brought his boat and 4 outboard motors...

into my shop. On April21, 2015, Mr.B[redacted] was contacted and advised I had shop checked the 1957 Johnson 35, not repairable; 1985Johnson 15 HP,not repairable; a 1962 Johnson 4O HP that was repairable as_Well as a 1985 Johnson 15HP that was also repairable. Mr. [redacted] was advised at that time the cost to repair said motors would beapproximately $500. Mr. [redacted] approved the work.
On May 12,2015, Mr. [redacted] was contacted and advised said motors were repaired. Mr. [redacted] cameout to pick up the boat and 2 motors. At that time he advised me he did not have some of the requiredparts that should have been with the Johnson 40 HP to make it operate properly on his boat, i.e.; powercontrol cable from dash to motor, and parts to hook motor up to steering. Mr. [redacted] was advised that Ihad the parts and could finish the installation and modify the steering to work on the Johnson 40 HP butit would be approximately an additional $300; which excluded the $150 that I agreed to give Mr. [redacted]for the salvaged motors. Mr. [redacted] agreed.
Said parts were supplied and fabrication work was completed .. Mr. [redacted] was notified approximatelyMay 29,2015, the work was completed and came into the shop. Both motors, the Johnson 40 HP andthe Johnson 15 HP, were test run for Mr. [redacted] at that time. He was also advised that he needed a newbattery as we were using our shop battery charger to start the Johnson 40 HP. Mr. [redacted] paid theoutstanding invoice, copies of which were presented to him. Mr. [redacted] removed his boat and motorfrom my place of business.
Approximately June 24,2015, Mr. [redacted] notified me that they had taken the boat to the lake. Theycould get the motor to start (Johnson 40 hp) but couldn't keep it running. Mr. [redacted] was advised tobring it back to the shop so we could rectify the problem. June 30,2015, Mr. [redacted] was advised thatthere was a carburetion problem. I was going to have to find a good used carburetor and rebuild it torectify this problem. On July 9, 2015, Mr. [redacted]'s wife contacted me and was concerned that Mr.Brown had paid us $800 to repair his motor and he could not afford anymore. I advised her that this waswarranty work and there would be no charge to them.
We also discovered in the repair the cylinder head was bad so another cylinder head was procured, milled, new head gasket, and a good used carburetor was rebuilt and installed. Mr. [redacted] still had notsupplied a new battery, at which time Mr. [redacted] was advised again that he needed a new battery. Hewas also advised there may be a starter problem and a starter rebuild would be necessary.
All of the recent work was warranted, a cost of$455.98 at no charge to Mr. [redacted]. The battery is notmy responsibility. My business did not work on his starter; therefore his starter is not my responsibility.Mr. [redacted] was advised the motor ran fine. Two of his friends came in to pick the boat up. He wantedme to run the motor. They still had not supplied a new battery. They advised me they would bring a newbattery by in the next couple days. That did not happen. Mr. [redacted] was advised to come and removehis equipment from my place of business.
In summary, Mr. [redacted] failed to mention there were 4 motors involved. Mr. [redacted] failed to mentionthat 2 of those motors were repaired. Mr. [redacted] failed to mention that this would have been almost a$1,000 job had we not credited Mr. [redacted] for the 2 salvaged motors. Mr. [redacted] failed to mention thatwe did almost $500 worth of warranty work to the 40 HP. Mr. [redacted] failed to mention that he wasadvised numerous times that he needed a new battery. Mr. [redacted] failed to mention that he was advisedthat there may need to be starter work done. By Mr. [redacted]'s own volition he has stated, "he still doesnot know if the motors going to run", so we can only sumise that he has not acquired a new battery. This matter is beyond our responsibility and beyond our control.
As for the derogatory statements, Mr. [redacted] left me numerous extremely derogatory messages on mycell phone. The only time anything derogatory was said to Mr. [redacted] was when he and his buddiesshowed up at my place of business, got out of their vehicle in a cloud of marijuana smoke and got intomy face. They were told if they ever came to my place of business that way again the police would bevisiting them. It was extremely disrespectful as I am a recovering alcoholic and addict of 31 years at thetime not to mention I believe it is illegal to do drugs and drive. Mr. [redacted] has an extremely interestingway of spinning the truth. If Mr. [redacted] would like copies of his original invoices we would be morethan happy to supply them to him. We consider this matter closed.
Regards,
Michael L[redacted]
