Review: I went in for an eye exam on 10/1/2013, at that time I asked if my insurance covered the exam and they said yes. I was not informed the cost of exam or that they failed to contact my insurance company . My insurance covers an eye exam once per year. ( I was 30 days early, if I would have known I would have waited) the employees at the eye clinic told me I was covered. I was surprised when I got a bill, and when they told me they could not cover any cost of my eyeglasses. I never was charged $210.00 for any eye exam ever! Outrageous price! I have a $10.00 copayment and my $190.00 goes to cost of glasses. I'm a college student, I can't afford to pay this amount. If they would have stated I wasn't covered for another 30 days if would have helped! When I called my insurance co. Customer service stated milwaukee eye associates did not call to verify. I then had to spend $150.00 more to get my glasses elsewhere! Never will I go again!Desired Settlement: Verify coverage of insurance for your clients. The bill be disregarded since I had to go elsewhere for what I came in for. Eyeglasses!!! Let your clients know cost of exam before you provide services. I would have drove home to pay $10.00 at my old Dr. If I would have known you charge 210.00 and I wasn't covered!

Thank you for emailing me the original complaint information for ID [redacted] on Friday, May 16th, 2014. Please find our response below and supporting documentation attached.

This customer indicates that we told her that her exam would be covered when she was here for an appointment which is either untrue or a misunderstanding. Given the nature of our business and insurance benefits, we can never guarantee that their routine or medical eye exam will be covered by their insurance plan. All insurances plans are very different, and we do not verify coverage or benefits prior to exams for any of our medical insurance patients, nor are we required to. We are able to tell patients whether or not we are in-network for their plan and that we will submit a claim to their insurance for processing. This is the most that we can assure them of at the time of their appointment. Because of this, our billing responsibilities are clearly outlined in our Patient Rights and Responsibilities document that every patient, including this customer, signs (see attached). It is the patient’s responsibility to know their personal insurance coverage and benefit information. We are not required to contact an insurance company prior to seeing a patient.

The amount that we bill for our services is the same for all patients. We are not responsible to know each patient’s financial situation or situation in life. If they sign our Patient Rights and Responsibilities, they agree to pay us for services rendered. We provide estimates for the cost for our services over the phone or at check in whenever it is requested. If requested at check out, we are also more than happy to provide a walk out statement detailing all our charges.

We received a phone call in December of 2013 from the customer inquiring about our billing practices. Our billing practices outlined in this letter were also explained to her over the phone by our billing department supervisor following her inquiry.

I am not sure why this customer would have had to spend “$150 to get my glasses elsewhere!” when we provided her with a glasses prescription on the day of her appointment. We did not bill her for a pair of eyeglasses.
