Our company received a complaint letter from Revdex.com with regards to a 6 foot tall western red cedar fence install and we are taking this matter very seriously!Back story- I was called to do a quote for a fence install at [redacted], Blue Springs Missouri. When doing the quote there was...

an existing old chainlink fence that needed to be removed. Mrs. [redacted] informed me that all the chainlink needs to be removed, but she needed to talk to neighbors first to make sure they were ok with that.  She said, she hoped the neighbors would let her take it all out and would discuss with all her nieghbors and let me know when it came time to install.The homeowner then purchased the permit from the city for work to be done the following week and let me know work could begin. The city informed Mrs. [redacted] (since she was the one applying for permit) the restrictions of a privacy fence within city limits.After we received the job, we began work tearing out the old chainlink fence except the South side. She informed me that all the neighbors agreed to allow removal of old chainlink except on south side and to put the new 6ft fence as close as possible to the neighbors chainlink and put pickets on inside (her side). With the old chainlink in the way on South side, there wasnt enough room to nail pickets up on outside.During the day of tearout, her husband came by during his off period from work. He was concerned about having one side (southside) having pickets on the inside and all the other sides being different with pickets on the outside. I told him in the City of Blue Springs the pickets needed to be on the outside of fence. He wasn't real happy about that and he told me and my worker, for cosmetic reasons that he wanted us to install the pickets on the inside for the entire fence. He wanted it all to be the same on all sides. At 2 different times both the wife and husband told me they talked with their nieghbors were ok with having pickets on the inside. So he instructed us to put all pickets on the inside. At this point we were doing what they had instructed for us to do! By now, we were just completing tearout and starting to get posts set.At near completion, a neighbor lady on south side (pool in back yard) informed me that we were installing the portion behind her house wrong. I told her that the homeowners informed me they had spoken to all neighbors and city (permit they bought) and had the ok to erect fence this way. I was merely following instructions from homeowners despite me telling them otherwise.We completed the job and we did a walk through with husband. He said it all looked great. I also received a text from Mrs. [redacted] telling me how great the fence looked! I will attache to the email. I was then paid the following day. About a week later Mrs. [redacted] sent met a text about the fence not passing code by City. I guess one of the homeowners  (pool lady) called the city on [redacted]. She told me I needed to come fix the fence and wasn't going to compensate for material or labor.  I responded with, we can help you fix and as cheaply as possible, but since you were told by city how the fence needed to be built and you told us to do it another way, that I can't do it for free. They as the homeowners where our boss and when they decided to not follow code from the permit they bought, that wasn't our fought.Final thoughts- If we installed fence incorrectly, then why did I receive a text stating it was great, and payment from them? Why did they keep telling me they had neighbors sign off and the nieghbors ok to install fence the way they told us? I also have a witness that was present when husband told us to hang the fence with pickets on inside. Again, I recommended they put the pickets on the outside, but he said he wanted us to do it the other way. I have never installed a fence with pickets on inside!!! I have pictures from tons of fences all with pickets on outside because that is how to do it!!!I called the city afterwards and they recalled the permit being purchased by homeowner and that they went over the restrictions with them. I don't feel as though [redacted] cared what the permit said or didn't pay attention to the rules. Also wasnt concerned what neighbors thought and did what they wanted thinking they could get away with it.Per the Revdex.com letter I received Mrs [redacted] stated there was also no response from my company and that too is false. I called her emmiediately after receiving her code violation text and we then texted several times thereafter. I informed her of 2 different ways to fix and cheapest options. She kept telling me we had to fix her whole fence for free.Bottom line is, we built the fence exactly how they told us to despite me and city telling them otherwise. They failed to read the permit and now want to blame us the installers and that is not fair for my small company and will take this to court with my attorney [redacted] if necessary.
