Review: I left Joe P[redacted] of MJS Petsitting in charge of my three cats ([redacted], and [redacted]) from 7/28/14-8/12/14. Joe was scheduled to visit once daily and perform the following duties: feeding, refilling/cleaning the two water bowls, socializing with the cats, scooping two litter boxes, adjusting the blinds, taking in the mail, ensuring that classical music was playing, cleaning up any pet messes, and administering liquid medication to my eldest cat ([redacted]) daily. Prior to my departure, I drafted detailed instructions to remind Joe of exactly what to do, should there be any confusion. During my trip, I corresponded with Joe almost daily. He told me that he would text me daily with an update, and that usually happened, but I often had to initiate contact. Joes responses were short and perfunctory, but always positive. Never was there an indication that anything was awry or amiss at home. I had no reason to be concerned. I do not own surveillance cameras (or a nanny cam), so I had no way to verify the information Joe provided, nor the frequency of his visits. However, I have been using Joes services for three years, and while I have never been thrilled with the quality of his pet care, I found it to be adequate prior to this trip. We had previously addressed some issues of concern (i.e. filling the water bowls on a daily basis and the proper administration of the liquid meds), and I felt comfortable that Joe remembered what to do and how to do it. Put another way, prior to this trip, I had no reason to file a formal complaint/claim or to request a refund for services rendered. Suffice it to say, I was aghast when I saw the condition of my home on 8/12/14. Joe corresponded with me that afternoon, asking when I would be home. I found this odd, as our sitting agreement was pretty specific, but I confirmed that I would return that evening. I then asked Joe if he had visited the kitties that day. He replied that he was at my home at that time conducting his daily visit. When I walked in on 8/12/14, I first noticed that none of the cats ran to the front door to greet me. This was strange as [redacted] (an extreme extrovert) always runs out to greet visitors (particularly me). I sensed something was awry. I called to the cats and no one responded. I then knew that something was wrong. I had been away for over 2 weeks, and they should have responded to my voice. I then noticed that the classical music (provided by cable tv) was off. Joe and I specifically corresponded a few days prior about the music, and he reassured me that it was working and turned on. The tv was on, but the cable box was off. When I turned the box on, it was set to Channel 39 ([redacted], a network I do not watch and which the DVR never records). Thus, I surmise that Joe was watching tv at some point instead of playing music for the cats as instructed. I then walked through the living room and noticed several piles (at least seven) of dried and caked vomit scattered on the white carpet and patterned area rug. It looked to have been sitting for several days, if not a week. To make matters worse, the dried vomit piles had attracted an ant trail that I followed from the living room into the kitchen. Ive lived in my apartment for three years and had never seen a single ant before that night. I was horrified. Once in the kitchen, I noticed that my kitchen countertops were dirty and bits of what appeared to be litter were strewn across. I disinfected the countertops the day before I left on my trip, and this was pretty gross. Additionally, ants had made their way from the living room onto the counters and into the kitchen sink. I also noticed that [redacted]s liquid meds were tipped over on their sides, with the cap only loosely placed on, not screwed on. Thus, the remaining contents could have easily spilled out. Also, Joe had removed my pet stain carpet cleaner from under the kitchen sink (where all cleaning products are stored), and placed it onto the kitchen countertop. This implies that something was cleaned up, or that he was aware that he needed to clean something up, however the vomit piles were still visible and present. Also, multiple new sponges had been used (for no apparent reason), and were also on the countertop. Also on the counter was the cardboard box from my linen closet in which I store my litter box pooper scooper and dustpan. There was no logical reason for this item to be removed from its proper place and/or atop the kitchen counter. Joe left his business card next to this mess, seemingly implying that there was nothing wrong with this situation.I next walked into the bathroom. The cats have two litter boxes there. Their food and water is also there. One box was broken (i.e. the center top filter component of a Booda litter box had broken off). The entire plastic filter-holder piece was removed, placed on my bottled drinking water, and there was a big hole left in the top of the box. Joe placed the charcoal filter itself on my bathroom sink. The water bowls were almost empty and completely dirty. This had been an issue during previous trips, and Joe and I had spoken about cleaning and filling them daily. Per Joes representation, he had visited that morning. I find this impossible as the bowls were dirty and almost empty. As soon as I cleaned and refilled the bowls, [redacted], who had crawled out from under the bed, started lapping up the water with such fury that it seemed as if he hadnt had a drink in a good while. I then started to question how often Joe had actually visited during my trip. And why was the charcoal filter on the sink? There was litter all over the floor. Not just immediately around the two litter boxes, but scattered all over the bathroom floor. This happens if the area around the boxes isnt properly swept on a daily basis after use. Joe and I had also discussed this before. It obviously went in one ear and out the other, as it took me about 45 minutes to clean the floor (it is a fairly large bathroom). I nextDesired Settlement: Refund for services rendered. Refund for extra out-of-pocket expenses paid. Apology and explanation.
