Moger's Auto Repair Inc. Reviews (1)

Review: In August 2015 I went to Moger's Auto Repair shop to have my car's battery replaced and brakes checked. Moger determined that I needed new brakes and rotors put on my car, to which I consented. The work done totaled $903.14 for new breaks, rotors, and a battery. Immediately after leaving the shop I noticed that my brakes were making a high pitched squeaking sound along with a deeper rumbling sound. I drove around for a few weeks with the thought that the sound would go away and perhaps the brakes were making that sound because they were new/tight. When the sound did not go away, I drove back to Moger's shop from my current residence in Manhattan, which is almost a 2 hour drive. Upon explaining my concerns to Moger, he put my car on the lift, "evaluated" the car, and returned it to me stating that the brakes just needed oil, and that it could be because the weather is cold. He did nothing to repair the brakes and sent me on my way. He said if the sound continued to bother me that I could bring it back another time and he would put oil on the brakes. I left frustrated after making the long trip to his shop to have nothing done. The brakes continued to sound terrible, and even began to feel like they were not working well (i.e., the brake pedal did not make smooth contact when I pressed down with my foot). Under the belief that there was something wrong with the brakes other than just needing oil, I brought the car to a shop in Manhattan (Auto Care East). I was told by the shop owner (Alan) that both the brakes and rotors that were put on my car were of extremely poor quality and that I should immediately have new, safer brakes/rotors put on the car. I was also informed that the price Moger charged for the brakes was a "rip off." I called Moger and let him know that I took the car to another shop to assess my brakes. This time he told me that I could bring the car back another time and he would put new brakes on the car. Moger also revealed that multiple people had recently returned their cars to him due to concerns with the brakes that he put on their cars. On October **, I made a third trip to Nyack to have the new brakes put on the car. Moger took the car in at approximately 10:00am and it was ready by 3:00pm. Upon getting into the car I noticed that my radio and clock had been reset, which was curious because all that I brought the car in for was to have the brakes replaced. I also noticed that I could not roll down my passenger's side window using the door controls on the driver's side. When I called Moger to ask what happened, one of the mechanics answered the phone and stated that he cut off the battery while working on the brakes because he could not figure out how to turn off the alarm on the car, which simply requires pressing the unlock button on the keys. This individual told me that I could bring the car in and they would reconnect the window control which seemed to be affected when the power/alarm was turned off. I brought the car back on October **. When I arrived at approximately 1:30pm Moger informed me that his mechanic had left for the day, despite the shop's hours being stated as open until 4:00pm. Moger proceeded to call his mechanic but after receiving no answer, he said that he, himself, would look at the car. After about 10 minutes Moger returned and stated that I would need to purchase a "valve" of some sort to fix the window that was working prior to bringing the car back to replace the faulty brakes that he put on the car. I mentioned to him that the mechanic that I spoke to on the phone mentioned nothing about a valve, and in fact knew exactly what happened to the window control, since he had worked on the brakes and shut the battery off.Desired Settlement: I would like my window control fixed. However, I am very distrustful of Moger's business since each time I have brought my car to him I have left with a new problem. I would like to take my car to a trusted auto shop to have the window control fixed and I believe that Moger should be responsible for covering the charge.

Response:

The business has responded. Please see below:The first time customer is the daughter of a long time customer. She came in on August **, 2015 and had her battery replaced, front and rear brakes replaced, brake calipers and hardware cleaned, brake fluid added, and an oil change, with a bill of 903.14. Her father called the following week saying that his daughter was unhappy with the work. We told him that she can bring the car in and we can look to see if there is any defect or debris between the backing plate and other issues that could be making the customer unhappy with the brakes. He stated she can only come in on a Saturday, which we have limited hours and mechanic. The customer brought the car in, and the car was inspected. All looked fine. It was perfectly safe to drive. We explained to her that some brakes may squeal during the break-in period. In the meantime, we contacted the supplier and reported a complaint with the product. We let the customer take the car. That week, we call ed the supplier to follow up on our complaint. Unfortunately, we did have other customers with the same complaint, leading us to believe that this is a manufacturer’s defect/flaw. The following week her father called again to tell us she is still not happy with the car. We told him to tell her to bring the car down ASAP. We were told that she can only come on a Saturday, which is only by appointment and limited hours. We explained to him that we suspect an issue with the brand of pads and rotors, and would be more than happy to replace the brake pads and rotors with a different brand of brakes. The customer came in on that Saturday and we replaced the front brake pads and rotors as well as the rear pads and rotors. Shortly, after the customer picked up the car, she called us to state that here presets on her radio were not working. She also reported that the front passenger window was not working. We explained to the customer that the alarm was constantly going of f in the shop, and there was no way to disconnect the alarm except for disconnecting the battery. As for the window, we were not sure why it stopped working, or if it was even working before she brought the car in. We told her that we would be happy to look at the window and see if the was an issue with the connection/wiring or a motor/regulator problem. This is an electrical issue, so we would need our electrician to come in to examine the car. We explicitly told her that if she must come in on a Saturday, she must come in the morning, since we specifically called our electrician to come in on that Saturday morning just for her. So, when the customer came in at 1:30pm, our electrician had left, and there is nobody that can look into the electrical issue. The customer complained that her car couldn’t be looked at, since she came in so late; so, Mr. Moger, the owner said he would look into the issue and see if the problem was simple or required the electrician’ s expertise, which we were all pretty confident was needed. We explained to her that it appears to be a regulator problem (Dealer only part: $350-400). We cannot say if the window was working before or after the repairs, since there was never a reason to look at a window when doing brake repair. We have been in business for over 40 years, and this is the first complaint we have ever had reported to the Revdex.com. We apologize to the customer for the inconvenience, and would have loved to resolve the issue with her personally. It is too bad that she felt compelled to use her father to communicate with us and to file a complaint without discussing the matter any further. As for the customer stating that she had to make a 2 hour trip from Manhattan to come to Moger’s, I am not sure why it would take someone 2 hours to travel 24 miles to Nyack, NY. The customer’s home address was in [redacted], and is only 7 miles away.
