MONOVA Contractors Reviews (1)

Review: We contacted Monova about finishing our 650 sq. ft. basement.

1. The tile job in the newly framed (by Monova) bathroom was uneven and a high percentage of the accent tile was chipped.

2. We asked [redacted] (owner) to have his tiler remove the tile and replace it with another accent tile.

3. [redacted] had his worker remove the accent tile to replace it with a less difficult to install accent tile.

A. [redacted]'s worker used the new $250 ceiling fan as an exhaust fan for particulate dust removal. The fan still blows dust on guests who visit and use our bathroom.

4. The tile-worker began installing the new accent tile and we noticed that the backing for the colored glass tile was chipping. We questioned how this repair would look but went with it because we believed that the adhesive would fill-in the chipped areas on the back of the tile and that it would be minimally noticeable.

5. During the same accent tile repair timeframe, we noticed that a high percentage of the wall tiles in the bath, which is tiled on all four walls, were offset and not set level to the wall. We were wondering, how, on a brand new wall, tiles could be set uneven.

6. We informed [redacted] about the (1) ruined accent tile, (2) novice quality work on much of the tile in the whole bathroom and, (3) the use and continued decreased value and performance of the ceiling fan that was used as a particulate exhaust fan.

7. After realizing that continued repairs because of inadequate quality craftsmanship ended up perpetuating a cycle of subpar repairs, we decided to ask [redacted] for $1000 off the total bill of $27,200 and just asked him to leave although there were many other repairs of newly installed items that I knew I would have to repair myself.

8. Currently, after several visitors have viewed our finished basement, we have come to the realization that the bathroom's embarrassingly uneven and chipped tile work is a repair that would cost 5,000-10,000 dollars ([redacted] Plumbing estimate was $4000 for shower only). While I know how to undertake many small construction projects on my own, I had no idea that the cost of legitimate repairs to the sub-par tile work in the bath would cost the exorbitant amounts that I recently found, and had quoted.

9. On the other hand, [redacted] knew that he was getting off easy by refunding $1000. Not only were there issues with tile and ceiling fan but, the vanity was installed incorrectly ([redacted] made excuses for his crew's method of installation and was not truthful about reasons for the incorrect installation) , the newly framed walls are crooked and there is a short in the (new) shower light.Desired Settlement: I would prefer that [redacted]'s workers not enter my house. The tile worker's lack of professional tile work is something that I would like to avoid.

Having another contractor come in for tile and ceiling fan repairs would be preferable.

$5,000-10,000

Response:

First of all, the exhaust fan was purchased by [redacted] and we installed it. The tiles - They pointed out few accent walls to be reinstalled so we took it out and installed it. After that they didn't like tile they chose plus the way it was installed they decided to get a totally different tiles. At this point we didn't say anything even though this is a whole new work they are asking us to do. We installed new accent tiles. Every time we installed something, these people doesn't say anything when they saw the installation. A day or 2 days later when we are onto other part, they say we need to do it again. When the whole job was done, everything was installed they were ok with it so we no longer had to do anything else. Obviously they wouldn't have gave us the final payment if they didn't agreed with final job.

After 20 Weeks later the job is done, 20 WEEKS!!!! they pull this? As you Revdex.com can see we never had one complaint all these many years because when customer want us to come back to fix something within reasonable time frame we go and fix it. These people couldn't have contacted us following week or few days later after we were completed? We could've figured something out on these tile repair work. Again, they were all fine with it, agreed to move on and we collected balance. They said they had few contractors take a look at the bathroom? At this point, 20 weeks later, who knows what they did to the bathroom? They could've tried to repaired it them selves, other contractors might have done the work, and realized they made it worst. Now they want to blame everything on us when our part was all done 20 weeks ago. We don't know what might have been done within in those time frame. We understand some tile jobs can be better than others. But even you put a magnifying glass on well done tile work, you'll find all kinds of flaws. They asking $5000 for few uneven tile work? this is absurd. Of course other contractors will tell you, oh this isn't a great job, you have to take it all down and start from scratch, etc.... That's what every single contractors say when they go in see the other jobs. [redacted] quoted them $4,000 just for the shower?? You can get small size entire bathroom done for $5,000.

The fan, if the fan is blowing the dust out why didn't they even call me to let me know? We cleaned the fan before we finished. We checked it and there was no dust when I stood right underneath it. If it's the dust coming from outside, we have no control over that. Or could it be dust from tile work was done by other people they hired after us? Again, how are we suppose to know what went on after we left in 20 weeks. How can the walls be crooked when we used the square tool to install new framing. Sure, the 2"x4" or drywalls materials it self can be uneven. When you go into brand new houses, the walls are not leveled. We showed [redacted] everything as the job went on. We made changes on certain things and showed them again. They were fine with it and we move on the other parts, and other parts, then completed the job. When did the shower light go out? Could it be the bulb? Again why not call us to let us know? They don't want us back in the house, is that why? We don't want to go back there either, believe me.
