With regards to the complaint, it is our professional view that the tax return we prepared is correct, and in the course of subsequent discussions with the client, we re-examined the matter, at no cost to the client and remain of that view
*** The issue revolves around the marital status of the complainant, who initially stated she was married though her husband works in another country though regularly comes to Canada*** Another element of the consultations was related to the determination of tax residency, a complex and somewhat subjective determination driven by the unique facts of each situationThe inquiry which the client says we sent her to do was to ask her spouse what tax filing position he took on his tax return, which she did later provideThe contention that this was somehow a technical matter which we as professionals should have done is unfounded as we have no access to her husband or his affairs in the other countryThe discussion which the client had with *** conveys a certain set of facts therefore the suggested adjustment is meant to convey that version
We have no desire to be engaged in a dispute over feesWe have noted that the client wants a fee reduction and also wants us to prepare the adjustment free of chargeWe do not feel it is appropriate to request this adjustment and therefore do not wish to be professionally associated with it
In light of this we will cancel our invoice entirely and suggest that the client obtain another accountant to prepare the adjustmentWe will co-operate with the new accountant in the usual professional fashion
