Review: I scheduled a visit for a routine physical, which would have been covered by my insurance company as preventive care. I was specifically told by the receptionist to bring my questions with me. I did my due diligence before and after the visit: I called my insurance company beforehand to ensure that this was one of their preferred providers, and I also stopped the nurse after my appointment to verify that my visit would be billed as preventive care; I was ambiguously informed that it depended on what the doctor wrote on my record. I later received a bill in the mail, and was told that my physical did not qualify as preventive care because I had brought concerns to the doctor and she had ordered further testing. I have no problem paying for the further testing, but I find it absurd and unethical that my appointment for a physical can change categories (without my knowledge) simply because I brought concerns and questions to my visit. This is particularly offensive considering the fact that I was told by the receptionist to bring my questions to the appointment. Had I known that my verbiage during the course of my appointment would change the category of my visit, it certainly would have influenced my decision-making. I was told by the office after the fact that, in reality, my concerns would have required a separate visit, but that the doctor consolidated things for me by doing it all in one visit. Being offered such a separate visit would have signified to me a change in expense, and would have allowed me to make an informed decision, but no such separate visit was even mentioned. I am an educated person, and I did my research beforehand, but I should not have to be a medical billing professional in order to understand how my bill is going to be calculated; it is bad business to make changes during the course of service without educating your client on the cause for the change or obtaining their authorization before proceeding.Desired Settlement: I was offered a small discount on my bill after I made my complaint to the business, but am not satisfied that this was sufficient. I would like to see the portion of my bill that covered the office visit either refunded or resubmitted to insurance as the preventive care visit that I scheduled.
