In response to your letter dated 2/*/2014, [redacted] did come
into my store, Karen's Closet, on 1/**/2014 and she did purchase a Louis
Vuitton "like" bag. Since opening the store, all employees have been
instructed to answer the question of "Is this "real" or,
"authentic", etc." in the same manner. That question is always
answered, "We can't say whether or not its real unless we have the
paperwork to prove it." An authentic [redacted] purse would not be
priced at $85.00 - even if second-hand.
When the customer called to inform me that she wanted a refund for
the purse, she explained that she has purchased quite a few purses at Karen's
Closet to re-sell on E-Bay for a profit because our prices are so affordable.
She was adamant that because the purse was not an authentic [redacted], she
could not sell it online as such and demanded several times that I refund her
money. We have always had a policy of "All Sales Final" - it is
clearly posted in our store and printed on every receipt. The reason we do not
do returns is because we give our consignors a website
(myresaleweb.com) to go to where they can see what has sold and how much
money they have in their account.
She was resolute in informing me that I was going to refund her
money and she would be in to pick it up. I calmly explained our policy to her
several times. She hung up and called back about 15 minutes later,
threatening to call a lawyer and the Revdex.com for
selling "fake" merchandise while telling customers it was authentic.
When I informed her that our policy is to tell customers, when asked, that we
cannot confirm authenticity, she told me that a grey-haired lady had told her
it was real. While we do have a grey-haired lady employed here, she was
not working at the time the purse was purchased and could not, therefore, have
told her such. The purse was consigned and sold on the same day and I was here
the entire day.
It appears that [redacted] made a purchase for profit, was unable
to proceed in her normal channels, and is endeavoring to correct her mistake at
the expense of Karen's Closet and my reputation in the community. In seven
years of business, this is the first time this type of issue has ever arisen.
