Motor Works West Corp. Reviews (1)

Review: On 05/13/14 I took my 2003 BMW Z4 to Motor Works West Corp. per the request of a buyer who agreed to purchase my vehicle after inspection. I agreed to have the vehicle taken there for their Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI), which is advertised on their website. I was shocked when I received a text from the prospective buyer saying that there were major reliability issues with my vehicle per the PPI report and that he was no longer interested in the vehicle. I then called and spoke to [redacted]MotorWorksWest.com he told me there were no major issues with the vehicle. There was a possible issue with the locking mechanism (Something me and the buyer were aware of prior to the PPI and had agreed to fix prior to sale), new tires (buyer knew this also prior to PPI) and a cracked rim. I was told by [redacted] there were no other issues with the vehicle. At this point I was confused because the buyer knew about the tires and locks, plus a rim is only a few hundred dollars. So what were the major issues the buyer was referencing? Turns out that [redacted] from Motor Works West Corp. decided to tell the prospective buyer that the factory BMW SMG transmission on my vehicle was very problematic and a big risk. Despite the fact that he checked out my transmission and there was absolutely no issue nor has there ever been. To make matters worse I called BMW USA and they stand by the SMG transmission as being revolutionary and non problematic. Even worse is that the SMG in the z4 is diff. from previous BMW SMG's that may have had issues and [redacted] admitted he has never encountered a Z4 SMG with issues in his 35yrs. My complaint is that [redacted] from Motor Works West Corp. decided to tell a prospective buyer that my car was risky and problematic despite BMW saying the SMG transmission is perfectly fine and there having been absolutely nothing wrong with my SMG. The PPI service is to ensure the car has been maintained and has no mechanical issues. They do not have the authority to criticize BMW's engineeringDesired Settlement: Nothing really can be done. A so called BMW specialist that BMW USA says has not affiliation with them told my prospective buyer that my vehicle has a crap factory transmission. His opinion not fact. I don't understand how he can tell someone that the transmission on my vehicle is problematic despite nothing being wrong with it and having never seen a BMW Z4 SMG transmission with issues in his 35 years of experience. The SMG in the Z4 was an improved SMG from previous SMG's he was referencing as problematic. I lost time and money to sell my car and now it is all lost. I feel Motor Works West was way out of line here and the Revdex.com rating should be dropped and an apology letter should be sent to myself and the prospective buyer. BMW USA found it very offensive that, especially without being asked by the buyer, he would criticize their SMG transmission so harshly without reason or fact to back it up and so am I. A complaint has also been filed with BMW USA regarding this issue.

In response to Mr [redacted]: We performed a pre purchase inspection on a 2004 BMW Z4 VIN # [redacted] at the request of Mr. [redacted], who was contemplating purchase of the vehicle. The vehicle , belonging to Mr [redacted] was inspected at our facility for needed repairs. We found the car to be in reasonable condition. There were several significant things which we brought to the attention of Mr [redacted]:

1)The tires were worn out to the point of being unsafe. Also the right rear rim is cracked at inner edge, another possible safety issue. Depending on tire choice, cost of new rim & four tires can exceed 1000$. wheel alignment 200$ may be needed also.

2) the central locking system is not operating. this is part of a computer network which must be diagnosed properly. It is not common to have this problem on a Z4. It is an unkown risk to the buyer which can easily cost hundreds if not more.

3) the left side of the car had been repainted. Not a problem but a factor in the purchase price

I then discussed these issue by phone with Mr [redacted]. We had a also a general discussion-at his request- of my opinion & thoughts about this vehicle & if a Z4 was his best choice if he wished to own a roadster. I replied that it was universally acknowledged in the industry & auto media that the finest vehicle in this class is a Porsche Boxster- without exception- & that Z4 is considered average at best in comparison.

Mr [redacted] thanked me & stated he was not interested in this car due to repairs needed relative to asking price, which was above the value of the car once repairs were factored in.

My mention of the potential problem associated with the SMG transmission on this car was very much incidental to all this, in fact Mr [redacted] had already decided not to purchase the vehicle based on condition & price.

This was followed by a phone call to me from Mr [redacted]. I agreed to speak with him even though there was no reason to as I was was representing Mr [redacted]. He became quite hostile & seemed to blame me for causing the car not to be sold. The only reason the car was not sold was because the cost of needed repairs relative to asking price was not favorable to the buyer. period.

Mr [redacted]'s other statements have little accuracy & no merit. He seems quite fixated on this SMG discussion & wants to blame someone for the fact that someone simply decided not to purchase a used car for good reasons

Mr [redacted] is willing to support all of this if you need. I am available if further information is needed

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because: it is a completely inacurate portrail of what happened. Buyer knew of the issues found by motor works west proir to agreeing to buy the car. The buyer stated he did not want to buy the car due to "reliability issues". The issue you found were no reliability issues and in fact common for an older vehicle. You also told me on the phone that you offered your incorrect critique of the smg transmission as risky and problematic.you also told me that you stood by these comments despite nothi.g being wrong with the vehicle. Now it is clear you are lying and misrepresenting the fact and also trying to lable me as hostile when I was not. Horrible business practices and that is why you deserve this complaint.
