Movers, Not Shakers, Inc. Reviews (3)

Review: On August [redacted] 2013 I had hired a moving company called Movers Not Shakers based out of Park Slope Brooklyn. I was told that 3 people would show up to do the job at 8:30am. At 7:55am 7 men showed up at our house. It was complete chaos. They were going through all of my rooms all 9 of them unsupervised, there was absolutely no control over what was being done. I had a diamond engagement ring in a jewelry dish on the floor inside my closet in the master bedroom. My wife had gone inside to wash her face and brush her teeth, when she went into our bedroom she discovered there were 5 movers to move 3 pieces of furniture they had all left the room when she went to put her ring on she noticed the ring was gone. We were mislead into waiting 2 days to see if the ring would show up. When we did call back the manager of the company he told us it was his day off and he is recharging his battery.Desired Settlement: Replacement and acknowledgement of the theft. We were told all of the workers who showed up at the job that day were all with the company over 10 years we do not believe this is true because of their ages. We also do not believe there was proper background checks on the employees in question before being let into our home

Business/Consumer Response & Rebuttals:

We would like to first apologize to the [redacted]’* for arriving to their move earlier and with a larger crew than they expected. In the moving industry these are generally considered to be good things, but apparently [redacted] disagrees.

The movers were in no way unsupervised. [redacted] was the foreman on the crew. [redacted] is a veteran foreman, a very experienced mover and truly one of the finest leaders on our staff.

As for the events on the day of the move:

I received a call while the movers were still at the first (pick up) address at approximately 10:30 in the morning informing me that the ring in question was missing and that police were on the scene (the police were called by the [redacted]’s daughter, but sent away by [redacted]). I told the [redacted] family that I would be there right away and that we should not leave the first address to go to the second until I got there and we had a chance to try to figure out what was happening. [redacted] told them the same thing. Clearly, searching for a ring, amidst a move in one location is going to be much easier and less complicated than searching for a ring in two locations.

[redacted] insisted that we continue with the move, against strong suggestions not to by both [redacted] and myself.

By the time I got to the [redacted]’s they were at their new address. I spoke with both [redacted] and [redacted] about what had taken place. She was already completely convinced, despite the fact that there was no evidence whatsoever, that her ring had been stolen.

I proceeded to gather all of the movers, had them empty their pockets and remove all of the contents from any backpacks or bags that they had with them (filled with personal belongings).

I personally went through the contents of each and every bag. No ring was found.

In the days after the move, I asked that the [redacted] family take a couple of days to see if the ring turned up. It is often the case that we get calls about “missing” or “stolen” items that our customers end up finding during the unpacking process. This was not a way to mislead the [redacted]…it was a response that comes from years of collective experience in the moving business.

Movers Not Shakers did everything within our power to do things the right way for the [redacted]. They insisted that we continue with the move against our advice. They accused our men of theft with no evidence and they continued to insist that their ring was stolen even after the men all had their persons and bags thoroughly checked.

Response:

To whom it may concern,

Our responses to the questions posed to us are in black below.

1) Was there a second move scheduled august * for the truck or any of the seven men that preformed the move in question ?

Yes, there was one more move scheduled for that crew on August [redacted].

2) was a background check performed on all seven men prior to the move on August [redacted] and if so did any have any prior records ?

Yes, a background check was performed on all of the men and none had criminal records.

3) Did the work status of any of the seven men change since the move in question took place ?

No. All of the men are still employed at Movers Not Shakers.

4) What would Movers and shakers accept as evidence of the engagement ring missing as they state there was no evidence when we provided a police report and appraisal ?

Movers Not Shakers does not contend that the ring is missing. We only contend that it is not our fault or responsibility.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# [redacted], and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

[Your Answer Here]

The move was in my view rushed and not properly controlled which resulted in the missing ring. The extra men and early arrival appears to be related to a second move scheduled for that day. I hope that others can read and learn from this before deciding on a moving company. I also feel like I was misled by Movers not Shakers that I should wait two days before taking action as the mising items usually apperar. Their true colors came out when we did call as instructed and we were told by the individual on the phone that he is off and chillin and we should call back.

Review: On 4/**/2015, Movers, Not Shakers moved my studio-apartment belongings within Manhattan. The movers were responsible for safely moving all of my furniture and belongings. While all artwork was taken from my previous apartment, one Egyptian Hieroglyphic piece, approximately 24 X 36 in a custom thick gold frame, never made it into my apartment (~$400). After months of emailing and calling Movers, Not Shakers, they stopped responding and never followed up with the contract or reimbursement. They are liable, and I believe one of their movers took the piece.Desired Settlement: I would like a full reimbursement of the approximate value, $400. I would also like confirmation that the lost and found and truck was checked, and that the drivers were spoken with.

Response:

We have been in contact with this customer and offered her the amount she is requesting. Jamie M[redacted] - this check has already been cut and is waiting for a mailing address to send to. I will mail it to her today to the address we had on file for her in April. We agreed to cover her loss even though insurance on the move was waived.

Review: The movers damaged furniture and refused to pay for damages. They are responsible for damages but says they are not. I even paid them for additional insurance! The movers packed everything and applied tape directly to the furniture. They did not use protective blankets. When they removed the tape it took the finish right off the top of an expensive desk.Desired Settlement: The moving company should pay the full cost to repair the finish to the desk.

Business

Response:

I would be happy to pick up the desk and have it repaired here. The issue is tape [redacted]s on the desk surface. I’m confident our carpenters can repair it to his satisfaction, and that the request for $700 to fix it is too great for the work required. I have also emailed the customer directly. I will forward that to you as well.

Thanks,

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# [redacted], and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

The current status at the time of our call was that [redacted] at Movers Not Shakers has contacted me about resolving the problem. He has offered to have some friends of his come up and pick up the desk and repair it. I do not see this as a realistic option at all. The desk is an expensive piece of Ethan Allen furniture and matching the finish alone will take time and effort let alone the repair work. I have responded to that email stating that $700 would be a fair settlement price and [redacted] responded with $200 being the maximum he could see the damage being worth. I have received an informal estimate based on pictures I sent to a furniture resoration professional in my area and he stated the repair cost would be approximately $850+$195 pickup/return costs.

I will forward the latest email chain to you now.
