Review: Mr Rooter charged me $244.95 to light my pilot light on my hot water heater. A 15 minute visit INCLUDING him writing the bill and us writing the check. “[redacted]” from Mr rooter came to our home at [redacted] on Sunday 8/**/2013 at [redacted] and was done and gone by [redacted] – he set the CO2 switch and & relit the pilot for $244.95! We asked that the check be deposited / cashed on Friday which was also not done causing bounced checks in our account at $37 a piece. The office literally called asking for a $30 bounce check fee in addition to charging us at OVER $16 a minute !Desired Settlement: How could you justify charging that amount of money to light a pilot switch AND your representative said he would hold the check - Stop Contacting Us

Business

Response:

On August **, 2013 we did re-light the pilot light on the water heater. [redacted] was told how much the repair would be before we did the work. She agreed to have the work done at the quoted price. She had the choice whether to purchase our services or not, she chose to, if she had chosen not to we would have left and not charged her anything.

When we got there she had no hot water, when we left she had hot water. We did exactly what she wanted for the quoted price.

As to the check I apologize for any inconvenience but nothing was noted on the invoice or the check.

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint [redacted], and find that nothing will change therefore has been resolved.

Sincerely,

Review: On the morning of 8/**/13 we woke up to a large mount of water in our basement. After clearing out all the items and cleaning/drying the floor we could not figure out where the water had come from. That afternoon after work we decided to turn on a couple faucets at once and realized that the water was pouring out of the escape valve by the main septic/black water outflow pipe. The problem was only with high volume flow like a shower not slow volume like flushing a toilet or using the sink. We are members of [redacted]'s List so we decided to call [redacted] based on their good standing. WHAT A MISTAKE!!!!!!

At first all seemed well - [redacted] the technician arrived promptly, was courteous and seemed well informed. We informed him that we have lived in our house since 2009 and the septic had not been pumped since 2007 - it is just two of us and an 1000 gallon tank so we explained to him that we wondered if our tank was full. We went out in the yard and gave him the land survey map of the property that indicates were the septic tank is and the leach field. He could not locate the tank - he was only poking the ground looking for it out by the leach field - never close to our home. (Now we know that by law, new construction has to have a septic tank within 20 feet of the home - he never even looked there!) After not finding our tank in order to open it and tell us if it was full, he proceeded to open the main septic outflow cap in the basement. He inserted a snake about 10 feet in and immediately said it was getting "bound up" and that he needed to look with the camera. He told us that the camera was an additional $500 but that he would not charge us. That seemed wonderful. He inserted the camera and showed us "large roots in the pipe" with standing water beyond them so he could not look any farther. He then proceeded to tell us that our whole yard needed to be dug up with machines and the entire pipe replaced. The quote for this work was just shy of $5000 and could be started in the next couple days. The quote included up to 20 feet of pipe replaced, but he stated that it could be a lot more depending on how many feet of pipe were affected. (Now, knowing what we know, there is no way it would be more that 20 feet because of law) We were devastated. He said he would try to snake again and establish us some sort of flow so that we could at least flush toilets minimally for the next couple of days - no showers though.

He then insisted that I pay a 50% deposit for the 5K estimate in order for him to be able to inquire about scheduling the following morning - this seemed very abnormal to me. Luckily I refused and said that I only felt comfortable paying a deposit if I knew when the work could be completed. He left and said he would call us in the morning with more information. We couldn't sleep once he left. Something seemed amiss - How could roots just suddenly obstruct flow? How could we need to dig up our yard without first checking the tank to see if it was full (it had not been pumped in 6 years!)? How did he know where his camera was in relation to our septic tank - he couldn't find the tank outside?

The next morning while waiting for [redacted] to call us back, I called a local plumber in the area that was also recommended on [redacted]'s List. He waned me on the phone that [redacted] is FAMOUS for this SCAM! They come to your house in the night - tell you the snake is bound up - use the camera to "prove it" and then quote thousands of dollars to dig everything up and replace it all. My suspicions were now starting to seem justified. I asked this plumber if he could come in the next few hours to give us a second opinion - he obliged.

When [redacted] from [redacted] called later in the morning and said that they couldn't get the "DIG TEAM" here to our house until Friday morning I said that for now I would pass on scheduling the service because this was an "urgent matter" and I needed to get it fixed that same day. Then it got really shady - [redacted] proceeded to tell me that he would CANCEL the scheduled work that the team had on the books for that day (Thursday) so that the Dig Team could come to my house the same day. I told him that I didn't feel right cancelling another customer that was in a similar bind as myself just for my own benefit - that did not seem like good practice to me!? He then told me that ours was a "BIGGER more costly job" and that they didn't want to loose the work - WOW!!!!! Now I knew I had done the right thing - this was very poor business practice and was starting to seem very unethical! I politely declined and said I would call back if I had trouble finding someone that could come that same day.

[redacted], the local plumber, arrived a few hours later. He immediately found the lid to our septic tank and dug WITH A HAND SHOVEL for a few minutes. The tank was a mere 10 feet from our house under some a few inches of mulch in the landscaping bed! He informed us of the max of 20 feet from the house law. The tank was full to the brim! and had some small roots in it where the pipe enters the tank from the small decorative bushes that are planted over the tank on the mulch bed.

Turns out that [redacted] the night before had his snake and his camera IN OUR SEPTIC TANK - the 8 or so feet of pipe that we have is in perfect shape- no blockage - no tree roots - no damage. We simply had the septic tank pumped out on Thursday and used a shovel and rake to remove the hair like roots from the entrance of the pipe to the tank.

How can this be!!!!????!!!! [redacted] was going to come to our house - dig up our leach field b/c that is where they thought the tank was! - charge us $5000!!!! AND WHAT THEN!!!!!!!???? WE JUST NEEDED OUR SEPTIC TANK PUMPED!!!!!! The estimate that [redacted] gave us didn't even mention the septic tank!! Were they going to check it first? At least try to find it? See if it was full? Even if our pipe would have needed to be replaced no heavy machinery was needed - a simple shovel removed the inches of mulch and soil that were in the way!

I would not recommend [redacted] to ANYONE - buyer beware! I am also contacting the Revdex.com and the NY consumer protection board. These people are trouble and scam artists to boot!Desired Settlement: I would like my $373 refunded for the service provided to me on Wednesday evening 8/**/2013. I would also like other consumers to be aware of this companies unethical business practice!

Business

Response:

I am in complete agreement with [redacted]. We made a poor diagnosis without enough information.

I have refunded her money in full.

I do disagree with [redacted] assumption that this is a conspiracy to Scam her. Even [redacted] pointed out in one of our phone calls that [redacted] was a nice technician, worked very hard, and made a mistake.

I am glad she got a second opinion and we did not dig up her yard. I appreciate her input and will use the information to help train all of our technicians to do a better job and to make sure this does not happen again.

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me. I am still awaiting the refund.... it has not posted to my credit card yet.

Review: We called [redacted] to come to the house for an estimate for repair, as our water heater started leaking causing flooding. [redacted] from [redacted] Plumbing arrived, looked over the problem with the water heater and said (verbally) it would cost between $2200.00 to install and replace water heater which had caused the problem. My husband agreed to it for $2200.00. He then changed the estimate when writing it up to $2463.75 to take care of the problem which would include installing Bradford 40 gallon Indirect hot water heater. My husband again, said okay and signed the authorization of work invoice. [redacted] went into the basement to start repair of the water heater..after a few hours he called my husband down to inform him that the Boiler fill valve was bad..It would cost an additional $438.85 for this part in order to get everything up and running. Being he had already installed the water heater, we felt we had no other choice but to agree to the additional charge. After the water heater and boiler valve were replaced, we were told we needed a new pressure valve/pressure regulator, which would cost an additional $874.07. Of course we were livid. [redacted] left without installing the pressure valve...which in turn left us with brown murky water trickling out of all faucets..No pressure, no clean water. I called [redacted] to speak to someone in charge. The woman answering the phone connected me to the service man who came to the house..He argued with me on the phone, and said he actually did my husband a favor after he refused any more services, he ([redacted]) told my husband how to install the pressure valve himself (my husband does not know plumbing). I asked to speak to someone in charge, they finally after several phone calls put me through to a gentleman named [redacted], who supposedly is in charge. [redacted] said he wanted to send the same gentleman out the following day to talk to me..I refused and asked him ([redacted]) to come, he agreed he would be the following day to get my water up and running, then we can talk about refunds. The next day a gentleman by the name of [redacted] show up ([redacted], no show). [redacted] installed a 3/* pressure regulator. Our water is working, however the pressure is weak. My husband and I have made several calls to [redacted], asking him about a refund for the extra $438.85 for the boiler fill valve we were charged and he keeps saying he'll get back to us, however never does. I feel we were taken by dishonest [redacted] service. They came in and gave us an estimate we agreed and signed to, and then continued to tack on charges. We trusted [redacted] was being honest when given the first estimate, and then took us for more money. I am asking for a refund of $438.85 to resolve this matter. We paid cash to [redacted], and are expecting the same in return. Thank you.Desired Settlement: $438.85 refund in cash as we paid [redacted].

Business

Response:

I have apologized to the [redacted]'s many times for any confusion that may have happened during the replacement of their hot water maker, boiler fill valve, boiler expansion tank, and whole house pressure reducing valve.

I am unwilling to refund any money because the [redacted]'s have already received a Boiler Expansion Tank for free. The normal charge for this part and its installation is $425.09.

In addition we installed a whole house 3/4" pressure reducing valve for free. The normal charge for the part and its installation is $448.98.

We have already done $874.07 worth of work for free to try and make the [redacted]s happy.

The free work that we performed works out to be a 30% discount on the job as a whole.

I feel we have done as much as we can. During my last conversation with the [redacted] he indicated everything was working as it should and he was satisfied with our resolution.

Consumer

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# [redacted], and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

I ([redacted]) was "NOT" satisfied when speaking to [redacted]..and as stated before, he said we would be discussing a refund when he was supposed to come to our house, after he got our water running. He never showed up, and sent someone else who said I would have to contact [redacted] for that type of discussion. As stated in the complaint, I called more than once and was told he would call me back and never did.

Attached you will see from Mr. Rooter's paid bill, that we never received the boiler fill valve for free, we paid for it, as it clearly states on the bill, and was paid in cash as it is checked !! That is what we are asking to have refunded back to us. Again, we are asking for a refund in the amount of $438.85.

Sincerely,

Consumer

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# [redacted], and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

My original complaint stands as is... [redacted] came and gave us an estimate, we agreed to the price, and after taking our equipment apart, began raising the price drastically. Our water tank was not leaking before they ([redacted]) arrived at my home. I am requesting a partial refund as per my original complaint.

Sincerely,

Business

Response:

The water tank that was replaced was not leaking water and that is not why it was replaced. The water/expansion tank has a rubber bladder on the inside that flexes as needed to hold the expanded water and excess water pressure created by heating the water. It is that bladder that failed. Your problem was compounded by your whole house pressure reducing valve not working causing excess pressure in your home. It is this valve failure, and excessive water pressure that caused your water heater and expansion tank to fail prematurely. You should check your water pressure periodically to insure everything is still working properly. The whole house pressure reducing valve protects all of the fixtures, valves, and appliances in your home.

Review: Mr. Rooter was contracted by our neighbor at [redacted] in [redacted] to dig a new sewer line. [redacted] of [redacted] as well as her attorney, [redacted], were given irrevocable written notice (June 2012) in general and also with respect to the sewer line that they nor any agents acting on their behalf have permission to be on our property.

On Tues 6/** I came home to find Mr. Rooter employees and equipment, namely the excavator, on my property digging a trench. The building inspectors were called out and indeed verified that they trespassed and were on on our property and while the trench was partially on our property the sewer line itself was on the correct side, mere inches but nonetheless on the correct side. The inspectors and police made them move the 5 foot pile of dirt off of our property. A huge boulder was also placed on our property from the neighbor's side and Mr. Rooter denied it but as the building inspector and police pointed out it was clearly moved because of the machinery markings on it.

I called Mr. Rooter on 6/** and left a message with the [redacted]. No one called. So I left a voice mail for [redacted] on 6/** and he did not call back. On 6/** I gave [redacted] my cell number to give to his boss and I still have not heard back.

Our property line was clearly marked. There were 2 1/2 foot stakes marking the line (based off of pin and cap sets that we paid $1000 for in 2010), the property line was also marked by tree logs and lastly I have no doubt that the property line was indicated on the engineering plans. So Mr. Rooter was very aware of the property line and the fact that they were clearly trespassing.

As a result my property was damaged and is now a mud pit as opposed to greened over. Furthermore they disrupted the 2 1/2 foot stakes that help identify the official pin and cap sets that were placed by [redacted] in May of 2010. Because of the movement of Earth that Mr. Rooter performed on my property I am unable to locate the pin and cap sets as they have been covered by dirt and mud. They broke the city's sewer line/water main line and since my property was located down from it the property was water logged/flooded and excessively muddy.Desired Settlement: I expect a monetary payment to compensate me for the following:

1. The property damage that resulted in a mud pit as opposed to the greenery.

2. The money I now have to spend to have a surveyor come out again and replace/find the pin and cap sets that were covered over by the digging that ensued on my property.

3. Punitive damages for the trespass as there were visual indicators as well as the engineering plans and it is Mr. Rooter's responsibility to know where they are digging.

4. The money I now have to pay to have a huge boulder removed from my property and placed back on the neighbors side.

5. The missed time from work having to be on the phone with the building inspector, time out on the property with the building inspector and police.

Business

Response:

[redacted], I apologize for the trouble and am sorry my office did not call you back as fast as you would have liked. We trusted the other property owners when they told us where their property lines were, our mistake but in our defense most people know where their property lines are. Especially when the two neighbors have already had problems. As we spoke about the other day I am speaking to my technic[redacted]s on the job and will get back to you tomorrow.

Consumer

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# [redacted], and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

[Your Answer Here]

I am entitled to compensation for the trespass on my property resulting in a trench being dug, huge boulder being placed on my property, missing property markers that I paid for in 2010 for professionals need to be redone, and the cost to restore the property to the condition it was in before all of Mr. Rooter's people and equipment were on it and destroying it. A simple "I'm sorry" is inadequate and inappropriate. I am also entitled to punitive damages since Mr. Rooter can't read an engineer report and did not do their due diligence before digging. It is insulting that [redacted] sent us a letter acknowledging that we have been trying to contact them and not once in the letter said sorry. It is also further insulting that [redacted] spoke to me on Thurs 7/* and said he would call and come out to the property on Wed 7/* and never did. Getting a call on Thurs 7/** saying they would call us on Monday 7/** is avoidance of responsibility and not making me feel that they are interested in righting their wrong. Mr.Rooter has until the close of business Mon 7/** to resolve this to my satisfaction. If not my next step is contacting the licensing board.

In order for the Revdex.com to appropriately process your response, you MUST answer the question above.

Sincerely,

Business

Response:

[redacted], When we spoke yesterday you refused to let me do any repairs. You stated that you only want "money." I can move the boulder the 6" that is needed to get it off your property and I can restore the yard as requested. But you refuse to let me. I am sorry we can not settle this amicably. I am sorry we went on your property, I truly am.
