Review: [redacted] started a job in November (he projected the job to last 4-5 weeks in total). I paid him 1/3 of the job upfront. He said demolition would take 2-3 days. 3 week later I was leaving to go abroad. He asked for his 2nd payment. I was hesitant (as demolition was not complete yet), but as [redacted] and I were friends from college, I moved forward and gave him the $. He said all the money was for supplies. I returned 2 weeks later in December to find not much work had been completed and no supplies purchased for the job. He also requested $8,500 cash upfront for the plumber and $3,800 upfront for the electrician. I gave him all the cash he requested. 10 weeks later, the plumber and the electrician did their work; however [redacted] simply finished the demolition (and never purchased supplies). I received a letter from his insurance company saying his policy was cancelled during week 10. I called the insurance company and they said they reached out to him but never received payment; therefore it was cancelled. I live in a coop in NYC; therefore you have to be insured to work. My lawyer advised me to fire him immediately as this was unacceptable. Both the plumber and electrician reached out to me to inform me they never got paid; therefore they will not finish their work. I have to pay twice in order to finish the job! [redacted] will not return my $ nor has he returned the electrician's or plumber's phone calls. I had to hire a new contractor to finish the job. As this was a renovation of a one bedroom apt (inclusive of both the kitchen and bathroom), I racked up huge costs in temporary living expenses which [redacted] was aware of.Desired Settlement: I want the $ due to the electrician and plumber returned to me so I can pay a plumber and electrician directly to complete the job (so I don't have to double pay). I want 2/3rd's of the $ returned minus demolition costs (approximately $5,000 max). The total requested $ back to me is $17,000 as no supplies were purchased and no work was actually completed.
