Muller Heating & Mechanical, Inc Reviews (1)

In the summer of 2011 when my wife and I decided to find a way to heat our home more economically. LP gas in our area was at nearly $2.00 per gal. and our yearly LP gas bill was $2500.00 - $3000.00 per heating season.

We contacted Muller Heating and Mechanical to look into a Geothermal System. Muller was one of four contractors we consulted.

[redacted] and his [redacted] told us that we would be able to heat and cool our home for $1000.00 - $1200.00 per year if we installed his system. Of course we were excited about this, we would be cutting our expenses in half!

[redacted] told us he had installed 5 or 6 of these systems so we were confident in hiring him to go ahead with a system for us. [redacted] installed our system at the end of August, 2011. [redacted] installed a Geothermal Heat Pump, a new LP gas furnace and a new electric water heater, which is connected to the Geothermal Heat Pump. We paid [redacted] $15,000.00 for this system.

That is when our problems began.

From day one after the install, the system didn’t work correctly.

The Geothermal Heat Pump was supposed to be our main heating and cooling source, the LP furnace was supposed to be the back-up heating source if something would happen that the heat pump failed.

It didn’t work this way, neither of the systems worked correctly.

As of June 13th, this year, [redacted] or someone from his business, and at least 2 other contractors have been to our place 22 times attempting to get the system working properly. Our home is approximately 60 miles one way from [redacted]’s place of business.

We have came home at least 5 times during the winter months of 2011 and 2012 to find our house at temperatures in the 50’s and neither the Geothermal Heat Pump or the LP gas furnace were working! Our home is in northern Wisconsin, it gets very cold here. We were afraid to leave our home for any extended period, we surely couldn’t go anywhere overnight. In the summer months when the system was cooling our home, the LP gas furnace and the heating and cooling duct work would be covered with condensation to the point that water was running onto the furnace and onto the floor. We were afraid this water would get into the electrical circuit board in the furnace cabinet and do major damage to the system. I was continually sopping and mopping up this water. The water was also dripping from the duct work onto the sheet rock above the ceiling in the basement, this would have eventually cause the ceiling to fail.

Attention to details seems to be most of the problem. Eventually, the contractors that came to our home (22 times!) corrected the problems. After these contractors unneccesarily replaced many “new” components in the “new” furnace and the “new” heat pump, they found that the wiring between the Geothermal Heat Pump and the LP furnace circuit boards had been wired wrong by [redacted]. Also [redacted]s internal programming of the thermostat was wrong. [redacted] told us that the thermostat was bad and after replacing the thermostat with another new thermostat, the system worked just as it did with the first thermostat! There were also little things that a competent contractor should know, that were overlooked. One such thing was the drain line from the LP furnace to the condensate pump was not vented. This will cause the LP furnace to shut down, which it did. It took Muller two heating seasons to figure this one out! Another was the thermostat “differential” was set wrong, this caused the system to run in Stage 2 mode at all times. The system is supposed to start up and run in Stage 1 mode and switch to Stage 2 mode if conditions warrant. This also took Muller nearly two years to resolve!

Besides these mechanical and wiring issues, [redacted]’s workmanship is very poor to say the least. When his joints in the new duct work didn’t fit just right, he beat them into place with a hammer and covered it up with duct tape! [redacted] also constructed and installed a new plenum above the new LP furnace, it didn’t fit, so Muller hammered and duct taped this connection! I watched [redacted] do this himself! Also, the solder joints in the new copper piping are very sloppy, it certainly doesn’t look like it was done by a “professional”.

Most all of our electrical bills from Nov. – March, through both winters of 2011 and 2012 are over $250.00 per month, one as high as $479.00, This is considerably higher (let’s say twice) than before the new system was installed. We are now spending about the same for our heating and cooling as we were with our previous system, which was a 3 year old Payne (Carrier) LP gas furnace with central air. We spent $15,000.00 to do this!?

[redacted]’s only response to this was that “I didn’t think they (electrical costs) would be that high!”

The system has worked OK through this past summer in the “Cooling” mode, we will find out this winter if it will work in the “Heat” mode.

This has gone on now for over 2 years, we have been very patient with [redacted]. It’s obvious to us that [redacted] doesn’t know what he is doing. To say the least, we are very disappointed with our new system, we were misled and LIED TO by [redacted], I would NOT recommend anyone contract with him.

Just this week, we woke up at 1:00 AM Monday morning and the house was 60 deg. inside, it was –14 deg. outside. I called Muller and he said he would get someone out to look at it later this morning. I opened the cabinet to the LP furnace, wiggled some wires and it came back on! This again shows the nature of his work, very sloppily done!

Later tha same morning, [redacted] then told me that he has another contractor hired to take care of his service work. He said if I need this contractor to come and look at or fix my system it would be at my expense!

I paid [redacted] $15,000.00 for this system which has not worked correctly since the day he installed it, over 2 years ago. Now he expects me to pay someone else to fix it!!
