Tell us why here...Our Sales Rep thought there was between 2-3 layers of asphalt shingles.  Three weeks prior to the job install, we lost our steep roofing crew who was to install the Riley roof to a Storm Chasing company.  We sent our other crew to do the job and they determined that not...

only was there 3 layers of asphalt shingles, but an additional layer of cedar shake roofing.  The layer of cedar shake was not identified until the day of the job as there was no open attic space to inspect for the interior due to cathedral ceilings. The Home Owners knew there were multiple layers but never informed us that there was a layer of cedar underneath the other layers of asphalt shingles. The cedar shake layer was the deal breaker as it significantly increased the danger.  Without access to an open attic due to the cathedral ceilings, we could not see the cedar shakes under the multiple layers of shingles.  Building code requirements limit the number of layers to two layers of roofing. At that point, our crew determined that they could not be safe and were very uncomfortable on the roof.  As a result, they refused to do the job.  Without our steep crew, we had no choice but to withdraw from the job and return their $1000 deposit.  We added an additional $500 for their inconvenience.  In addition to these funds, we have paid $241 for the building permit which we are not seeking reimbursement. The Hail storm that hit on July 21, changed the dynamics of the available local labor market.  Like our Company, many of the good roofing companies had the labor stolen by the Storm Chasing Companies.  This shortage combined with the increased demand created havoc in our industry.   Listed below is a link to a report of the hail storm on July 21.http://www.stormersite.com/hail_reports/elk_grove_village_illinois/2017 We empathize with the Riley’s frustrations, but unfortunately, we do not have the labor resources that we did a month ago.
