Re: National Honor Society
margin-bottom: 5pt;">Complaint # [redacted]
Dear Ms. [redacted]:
Our firm represents the National Association of Secondary School Principals (“NASSP”) and we have been asked to respond to the above referenced complaint.
As you might know, NASSP operates both the National Junior Honor Society and the National Honor Society (“NHS”), the premier honor society for high school students.
In 2015, the NASSP board of directors decided to expand the NHS program to provide increased services to NHS members. This discussion was the result of a national research project—including Surveys, focus groups and interviews—capturing the guidance for the enhanced value of NHS and NJHS, from honor Society members, chapter advisers, and principals. In order to support this expansion, the NASSP board made the lifficult decision to increase NHS dues for the 2015-2016 school year from $85 to $385. In doing so, the NASSP board recognized that some chapters would not be happy with the dues increase, However, they believed that the benefits to be provided by the expanded NHS program wauld outweigh the increased cost of participation.
The expanded NHS program introduced for the 2015-2016 school fear began to offer these benefits:
 • To help members make informed academic choices toward college goals, NHS offered a Series of College Admission and Financial Aid Planning webinars; Applying to College (November 2015), Understanding Financial Aid (February 2016) and The “Right” College Fit (March 2016), all of which are available on-demand for one year of the live event.
Further support around college access and success is seen with th: inclusion of a College Readiness Track at the LEAD Conferences, to support both NH3 and NJHS students, and the launch of NHS Virtual College Fairs, taking place on May 17, 2016.
The NHS Scholarship program doubled the amount awarded, at d increased the number and size of awards to students during this academic year. This colomitment of more awards to more students will continue to increase each year.
NHS Scholar Dollars, a members-only scholarship search tool, was launched to enable students to identify ways to offset the financial burdens associated with higher education through customized search results around the four pillars: scholarship, service, leadership and character.
More adviser support, through the design of a dynamic and responsive Adviser Resource Center, which hosts a variety of webinars, how-to videos, training, and online tools to support effective chapter management. This Support includes the launch of a pilot Adviser Online Community.
. The inaugural State Summit—one-day leadership training and cross-state networking opportunities—was hosted during the 2015-2016 academic year, with delivery of these experiences for honor Society members and advisers, to be provided in various regions of the United States and territories, in the approaching academic years.
NHS chapter advisers receive Advise magazine, which offers timely resources and information regarding chapter management and student engagement, information about the dues increase was provided to NHS chapters and their advisors prior to the 2015-2016 school year. Correspondence was sent on January 30, 2015. (Please see the accompanying materials).
The National Honor Society has had a long history of preparing high school students for success and by expanding its programs, the NASSP board has positioned the NHS and its student members for success this year and in the many years to come.
Sincerely,
Eileen Morgan J[redacted]
