Vehicle was smoking and brake were hard to steer.Took vehicle to shop, mechanic checked, stated that the wheel was locked and caused the hubcap to melt. Drove vehicle for a few weeks, vehicle didn't feel right. Returned to shop, stated the problem. A mechanic drove it, said it was OK. Told to drive it and return if needed. After having driven some weeks after, vehicle burnt smell resurfed and hubcap started melting again. returned to shop and stated the problem.Left vehicle there, call from manager saying I had contaminated brake fluid and it would cost $900 to fix that problem. Told Mgr. I could not pay that.He drained fluid out and upon returning to get my vehicle, he said I would have to sign a paper indicating that my previous one year warrant was void because I did not conform to getting this latest repair or pay for removing the fluid. Mgr. stated to not bring my vehicle back there for any service,Order_Number: Invoice XXXXX and 4Desired SettlementSince I was not satisfied with service and still with problem, I desire full restitution. Seems like I threw money out the window. Business Response [redacted]'s vehicle came into my shop with one front wheel locked up, and she ran it that way long enough to turn the rotor a red color that is associated with extreme overheating. The usual cause of this is a bad brake hose, caliper, or rust that won't allow the caliper to retract when the brake pedal is realeased. It can also be caused by the brake fluid reservoir being overfilled. Upon inspecting her vehicle the brake fluid looked clear and was not over full. We recommended replacing both front calipers, rotors, hoses, and the one wheel bearing on the passenger side(heat damage will "cook" the grease in the bearing), this is the proper repair for this situation. She did not want the recommended repairs but did allow us to replace the pads and the the one caliper, rotor, hose, and wheel bearing on the passenger side. Upon completion it was working fine. She came back a few days later and said that she smelled something. We checked her brakes, they were not discolored and were working fine, and it was possible that she smelled the preservative from the new rotor. She came in a second time, the brakes were not discolored and were releasing like normal again. Suspecting an intermittent problem, we focused our attention on her master cylinder and proportioning valve. Even though her brake fluid was clear, we performed a non-standard test and discovered that it had been contaminated with an oily substance. It is something that we have only seen two or three times in the 23 years that I have been here and it happens when someone, usually the vehicle owner or a well meaning friend, mistakes power steering fluid for brake fluid. The rubber is attacked by the oil as it is a type of rubber that cannot withstand oil. I explaind to [redacted] that this is probably what ruined the first set of brakes originally, gave an estimate to replace the contaminated components that would be causing her stated(as we never observed it) problem, along with a recommendation to replace all her brake components that had any rubber in them, this would have included repacing some of the components that we just replaced(those we would have covered under warranty even though they were not a manufacturing defect). She got mad, brought in her "friend" that has been working on cars for "40 years", he at first denied that the brake fluid was contaminiated but when I made him go through our test method he conceded that it was, in fact, contaminated. We did not cause the original problem, we did not add more contamination, in fact we diluted it when we added the brake fluid neccesary to complete the job she allowed us to do. She refused to let us properly repair her car and I offered to flush her brake fluid at no charge to remove what contamination we could in order to prevent further damage from escalating quickly throughout her system. We did remove alot of concentrated conamination from her driver side caliper, a further indication that the contamination was there previously. When she returned to pick up her vehicle I had her sign an invoice stating that failure to perform proper repairs voids all warranty. Seriously, if you choose to drive on something broken, after being told, you can not expect your neglect and abuse to be covered under warranty. In addition our warranty covers defective parts and our workmanship, not a customers refusal to perform proper repairs and drive the vehicle anyway. After making statements that were hateful, and showing her obvious contempt and distrust of myself and this business, and realizing that I had already done more than I was required to do, I told her she needs to find a garage that she trusts and follow their recommendations. She had been to other garages, plus her "friend", and I'm sure she can find someplace to work on her car. My customers trust me, they accept my recommendations, I am ASE certified, I have an engineering degree, and I have been working on cars for 35 years. I have been here for 23 of those years. And we have an excellent reputation. If she ever figures out that I was correct, she still is not welcome back here under any circumstance. I do, on occasion, have to deal with customers who are frustated or upset. But her hateful and seemingly racist attitude will not be tolerated by this business or me personally. If you would like a demonstration of how I determined that her brake fluid was contaminated please feel free to give me a call and I will arrange to show you. Consumer Response The stated response to my complaint is filled with a bunch of untruths in regards to the said situation. Manager did state that he would drain the supposedly contaminated fluid out with no charge but upon my return to pick vehicle up, I was requested to sign the revised stipulations concerning the warranty or pay the requested fee for draining the fluid. I resent the lie to discredit my character as being Hateful and Racist, to cover the manner in which I was treated as a customer. No, I did not have any one service my car since this business supposing did the repairs. In his response to my complaint is a lot of untruth stated from the beginning.I was never given an option for service doing the initial visit there. Subsequently, I could not have refused service initially if not given the stated alternative???
