A long story and warning about using paint from National Paint Industries, THING TWICE.

This summer I wanted to bring my older boat out of storage, give it a fresh coat of paint and take it on a vacation. It had been regel-coated once before but didn't hold up well. It oxidized and had many hair line cracks. The work to prepare it for painting was extensive. Most of the gel-coat that was over the original had to be removed to get rid of the cracks. I planned to spray the finish and had experience with lacquer, enamel, and other automotive paints so I didn't anticipate any problems.
I explained what I was doing and the situation with the gel-coat to a sales person at National Paint Industries (lets call him Pete)and he recommended their marine paint Blue Water Mega Gloss. I purchased the primer, color and clear paint. Everything went fine until I applied the clear coat. It didn't go on or dry clear it had light brownish cast in the areas where the paint overlapped.

Needless to say I wasn't very happy and I called Pete at National Paint. He said they sent the wrong clear paint and they would replace it. They sent new paint, Mega Gloss Primer, Mega Gloss Gold Color, and clear called Top Secret Coating 1 Part Epoxy Industrial Marine Paint. I thought this was great they stand behind their product so I started sanding again to apply the new paint. Things seemed to go well, I sanded, primed, applied the color and clear paint and the boat looked terrific. I was very pleased until I poured some gas in the tank and spilled a little on the paint, it immediately started to dissolve and turn the clear coat a light milky color even when I immediately wiped it off with the shirt I had on.

Once again I called National Paint and left a message for Pete to explain the situation. I guess Pete had enough of me but I did get a return call from another person I'll call Joe. He indicated that he had heard this complaint before and again they would replace the paint with something else. This time they sent a primer and two part paint(Supermarine). It was too late to repaint before vacation so I used the boat and figured since I was going to repaint it a 3rd time it wouldn't matter if gas got spilled on it.

On vacation I put a quarter size nick in the back of the boat and since it would be next spring before I could paint the boat for the 3rd time I would patch the nick. It looked fine until I applied the clear, it checked (lifted it) the color paint where it was feathered. This makes me wonder what will happen when I repaint the 3rd time.

National Paint was very accommodating about replacing the paint but it really does not make up all of the preparation work required to repaint this boat 3 times and also will this paint hold up with so many coats of different paint. Needless to say, I am not happy with this paint or their knowledge of marine paint, there is always gas spills when filling boats on the water.

Aqua kote. Used last year failed. They sent new paint. Spent another month and it failed again. Cured for over two weeks. This paint isn't worth it even if someone gives it to you. Heck I wouldn't take a payment to use it. Its the worst

Review: In july 2013, I purchased some 7 gallons of their pool epoxy and prepped the pool exactly as prescribed. Prep and application were excellent. After 1 week the finish started lifting. Within 30 days, entire 1' square sections were lifting and clogging the filter. Ventura County officials were contacted and the pool was red-flagged, citing a choking hazard for swimmers. As such, the pool was closed and drained. The owners, [redacted] and [redacted] were contacted and samples sent for analysis. They have not responded to the analysis, nor have they responded to complaints or demand for refund. Their 20 year warranty is in my opinion non-existent, as is their customer service.

As of today April 20, 2014, about half the finish has failed and lifted. The entire pool will have to be refinished. You can view these videos on youtube. Deal with National Paints at your own risk.Desired Settlement: 700. cash to be refunded

Review: I purchased paint from National in June, 2015. I painted my pool based on the paint and prep directions. My paint started peeling shorthly after a week. I have contacted

National Paint for the past 2 months and also paypal with no resolution. National is trying to send new paint, but I will not risk to drain, repaint and fill the pool with the same product. I called a professional and was told the paint quality is very poor. I live in California and we have water limits. I had to pay for water trucks to fill my pool. I already lost a lot of money and now I have to repaint my pool.Desired Settlement: Full refund

Response:

The customer did not do any surface prep for the paint coming off the surface in only 1 week. Regardless, we offered her free paint to re-paint the pool. Our warranty is specific to a warranty of paint replacement only, which she refused.

Response:

Yes, the surface was prepped according to the paint instructions. The entire pool was washed with acid before applying the paint. And of course I will not drain my pool and repaint it with the same poor paint. :

Review: Pool paint was purchased from National Paint Industries in spring of 2012. They claim to have a 25 year guarantee for their paint. 3 months after paint was applied the paint began to come off on people going in the pool. Feet and hands were turning blue each time we went swimming. I called the company to report this. I had to call 5 times over a 2 week period before I had to get forceful on the phone before someone would actually answer my call, they also never returned any of my calls. I was blamed for the problem telling me I had put in too much chlorine that what I was experiencing was called "wetting," and that I should take my water to the local pool company get it checked once the chlorine was better the problem would go away. I took the water to the local store and they told me the water was low on chlorine and actually had to add more. I asked them if they ever heard of wetting and no one at 2 different stores and pool professional I personally know have also never heard of this problem, the problem never resolved. Now, spring 2013 weather is good jump into the pool and we all turn blue for another season, I called 3 time to National Paint and for the second straight year they have refused to call me or make this situation right. The paint is coming off all over my pool and the primer is showing through all over the pool. The pool now must be repainted!Desired Settlement: My pool needs to be completely repainted. I followed the directions of National Paint, on-line research and local professionals to prepare the pool surface for paint. I have no confidence this company will act in my best interest at this time. They need to contract with someone here in my hometown and pay for my pool to be redone with quality paint possibly from another company.

Response:

Been in business since 1959, & we are one of the leading manufacturers of this product. Product obviously did not cure properly, most likely due to moisture, or not allowing the proper time to cure. Whatever the case, our manufacturer's warranty is clear - Product replacement only, no refunds, no labor.

Review: This product advertises that it's fast drying when brushed or rolled to give a smooth finish....etc. Below is the advertisement of this product. I followed the directions on the paint can and after two weeks this paint has not dried. [redacted] and the company have continued to ignore me after they requested an email of pictures of the damage it has done to my boat. Not only did this product not perform as advertised, it is possibly a defective batch. This company is not being accountable. The paint is similar to putty and can be pressed and scratched off of my boat, on both the old paint and fresh fiberglass, so the old paint on my boat is not the problem.

I was informed that National Paint Industries does not have a legal department and I could only speak to [redacted]. [redacted] continues to ignore me and does not return my calls or my email. I have copies of all communication by email.
