I am contacting you on behalf of my elderly parents who had damage to their home from Hurricane Irma. My 81 yr. old father, who is a stroke victim and a veteran, called Orlando Roofing Company to get an estimate ONLY. The next day, the owner, Frank and his son came out to look at the damage. They coerced him into signing the assignment of benefits over to his company. My dad was under the impression that he was only signing to acknowledge that he wanted an estimate, not a contract. Orlando Roofing came out the next day and put a tarp over the main roof which showed damage but the main damage was the sunroom which has a metal roof and had been pouring buckets of rain throughout the storm. The insurance paid Orlando Roofing $3000 for the tarp that lasted about two weeks. They did come out and put another one on the same part of the roof. My father has called the company many times for the estimate he requested and Frank has told him that was none of his business. That was a negotiation between the insurance company and his company. He also told my dad that he would have to pay the $2800 deductible and the metal roof would be extra also. They have not done any additional work. The insurance sent a packet and a check in the name of both of my parents and Orlando Roofing for $12000+ which my dad still has in hand. Their house is only 1423sq ft. My parents are very upset by the way this all came about and felt bullied by the owner. The trust is irrevocably broken and they no longer want to do business with Orlando Roofing Company. I called the insurance company and explained all of this to them and they said to call Orlando Roofing Company and tell them that we no longer want to do business with them and we want to terminate our contract and need this in writing. I have called the company twice and told them but they keep putting me off and telling me that I would have to speak with Frank directly. Finally on Monday morning, 01/15/18, Frank called me and said he would be happy to let us out of the contract for $2500 administration fee. He said that is what it cost for all the time and labor put into the proposal. My parents are on a very limited budget and this is devastating to them. No place on the assignment of benefits/contract that my father signed does it disclose this information. The insurance company told me to get some more estimates, (which I have and they did not cost anything to obtain), and they would take care of my father's roof but that Orlando Roofing may try to make additional trouble for my elderly parents. I am just trying to protect my parents and cannot believe these people are taking advantage of an already stressful situation. Please let me know if this is something you could help us with.
