Neuro Science Inc Reviews (1)

Review: Gallatin Valley Natural Medicine in Bozeman, MT recommended that both of my daughters do a Cortisol Saliva test that is offered through Neuroscience. The cost on the form is $170.00 per test. ($340.00 total) We sent in the tests in March 2013 and filled out the information for them to bill the insurance company (my ex husband, [redacted] is the policy holder). In September 2013, I received a bill from Neuroscience for each daughter for $229.58. ($459.16 total) When I called Neuroscience to find out why we were getting billed, they said that something about my ex husband had been reimbursed for the charges and now they were trying to collect. The first thing that I questioned was why the bill for each test was $229.58 instead of the $170.00 per test that was stated on their form. The gal that I spoke with (I believe her name is [redacted], said, "Oh, that's just what we bill the insurance companies, it's not what your tests cost." I told her that I thought that was a bit shady, but she said it was what they do. When I questioned her more about [redacted] insurance company reimbursing him I stated that BCBS of Alaska - Premara doesn't reimburse the policy holder unless it shows that the provider was originally paid. Since Neuroscience was not paid, BCBS of Alaska wouldn't reimburse [redacted] or myself. I said that I would check with [redacted] and get back to her. I checked with [redacted] and he checked with BCBS of Alaska and they said they hadn't received any claims from Neuroscience for our daughters' tests. I left a message for Neuroscience to resubmit. After a short time, BCBS of Alaska said they would not pay any of the claims. At that time, I began making payments on the tests, but stated on each invoice that I would only be paying the cost of the tests as stated on the original test forms ($170.00 each), not the $229.58 that Neuroscience billed the insurance company. By December, I had paid the $340.00, but I am still getting bills for the additional amount. I wrote an explanation of what I was paying on the invoice and why each time I sent a payment. In January when I received a statement, I called Neuroscience and left a message saying I was paid in full and would not be paying for any more than the original charge of $170.00 per test and asked them to please call me if they had any questions. I have never received any phone calls or correspondence of any kind other than the statements each month from Neuroscience. Today, I received another statement with the difference of the billing between the true test charges and the amount the insurance company was charged.Desired Settlement: I don't understand why Neuroscience bills insurance companies for more than what a test actually cost. That seems a little dishonest. I feel that we have paid Neuroscience what we were originally told the test charges would be ($170.00 per test; $340.00 total) and should not have to pay any additional amount.

Response:

At the time both the samples in question were received, NeuroScience, Inc. had just updated pricing and all requisition forms. The forms submitted were old and only indicated a Prepay price. The Prepay price is $130 and the Insurance price is $180 - $10 more than what the patients’ healthcare provider had indicated.

There was an error in submitting the claims in that only $180 should have been billed; however, the old price of $229.58 was billed. Since we are an ancillary lab, we must submit to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Plan in the state in which the healthcare provider is. As such, when we contacted BCBS of Montana, we were informed that the subscriber had been paid directly for the full amount of the claim. On February 7, 2014 we contacted the insurance company again and were informed no such payments were issued to the subscriber and the charges were non-covered. We reduced the balance on each of the invoices to $170 as Ms. Klopp indicated her healthcare provider had informed them. The invoices are now paid in full.

Our apologies for the inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Manager, Billing
