New Life Christian School of Ephrata Reviews (%countItem)

New Life Christian School has decided to make up their own billing rules without a legally binding contract as to when and how much interest they're going to charge me on an outstanding bill at an apr of 60% which in WA state is illegal. When I called to resolve the issue all they did was try to belittle me as a human-being and bully me in to paying a random balance. I have no confidence in their abilities. They are simply trying to take advantage of my family. They have discriminated against my family since day one, by favoring certain families and paying their entire tuitions when they never even replied to my financial aid application that I had to pay to fill out.

A formal letter addressing this situation is attached to this e-mail. The customer made a decision to enroll her children in a private school with a full understanding of the requirement to pay tuition and fees. The customer's child attended New Life Christian School for the 2018-2019 School Year and there was not a single tuition payment made. In July 2019, after the conclusion of the 2018-2019 school year, the customer contacted New Life Christian School asking the Board to reduce the tuition owed or forgive the entire balance. There is a standard process in place to submit all financial aid requests through FAST, a third-party financial aid processor. No application was received for the 2018-2019 school year. The policy does not allow the provision of financial aid after the commencement of the school year, unless extenuating circumstances are demonstrated. No financial aid is provided outside of this process. Information on the financial aid process can be found at this link: https://newlifeephrata.com/FinancialAid. The customer has acknowledged the balance on her account and has committed to making regular payments; however only a single payment has been received.

Complaint: ***

I am rejecting this response because: I wrote an email to the school asking to settle this debt because I was advised to per a board member. I did apply for financial aid for the 2018-2019 school year. I will pull up payment records if need be. They do not know how to calculate interest correctly and that's why the balance has changed multiple times recently I will not make any further payments to the school unless it is through a third party. I'm willing to volunteer at $25 an hr to repay this debt. Clearly I pay my Bill's otherwise I wouldn't own a home or a vehicle or have a working cell phone, etc. Im not going to put a lot more energy in to this. I will let my lawyer handle it.

Sincerely

Thank you for your response.

The balance on your account changed when we realized that we did charge interest in excess of the allowable amount. When you contacted the school with your concerns, we recognized the problem and removed the 5% interest charge from you account. With the removal of this assessment, we assessed a 1% monthly interest charge on your account. Your account balance has continued to increase monthly because we have not received payment on your account. The 1% interest charge will continue to accrue at the first of each month until the balance is paid in full. A full accounting of activity on your account has been provided a several times and we're happy to provide this again, however, you've never noted there are incorrect charges on your account. If you believe there are incorrect charges and can provide documentation we will acknowledge the problem and make the appropriate change(s).

I do see you did submit a financial aid application for the 2018-2019 school year, and apologize that was not noted in the original response, In the financial aid application, you indicated your family could pay $4,865 in tuition; however your application was submitted after the deadline for priority financial aid funding which means there is no guarantee the Board had funds to provide financial assistance. Additionally, the financial aid processor recommended an award of $0 as they determined you had adequate income to cover your tuition expenses. Your family utilized the Preschool to Kindergarten incentive, which credited the tuition paid for the time your daughter was in KinderPrep and applied that amount to her Kindergarten tuition. For the 2018-2019 school year, Kindergarten tuition was $393/month and you received a discount of $221.25/month for this incentive. This brought your monthly tuition expense to $171.75 or a total of $2061 for the entire year, and no payments were made for these services.
