New York Bagel Cafe is a very busy small restaurantAt the opening time am there would be liat the door and the place remains full throughout the lunch time and very often until closing time pm
There are three servers working
during the busy hours but there's only one computer terminal to perform both: the financial transactions and the input of the food ordersFor the lack of a better spot it is located on the counter at the entry to the small bar space by the narrow passage way between the front and the kitchen
Since the terminal can only be used for one function at the time, if one server processes a number of payments at the counter where the customer needs to come up for electronic transactions, another server must wait before they can enter the new food orders
The vast majority of payments these days is by debit or credit and the customers while waiting their turn at the counter risk colliding with a traffic to and from the kitchen
Sadly we were losing some customers that would get up and leave when already seated or leave the waiting area, frustrated with having to wait much longer than anticipatedEven with their understanding of the situation some were just out of time and couldn't wait no longer
Striving and hoping to find a solution to the problem we decided to introduce "No Split Bills", having learned that the practice is not at all uncommon and receiving suggestions from various colleagues and from some customers also
The information sign is posted at the entrance as well as in several places throughout the restaurant and the servers are instructed to also verbally inform the customer of the policy before taking an order
We did realize that the "No Split Bills" policy might feel frustrating or inconvenient to some customers and we regret if it has, but we think that it wold be fair to the majority of the customers who, when arrive, likely are pressed for time, hungry, and expecting to be seated and have their meal within a realistic, not prolonged wait time
The "One Entrée per person" request was introduced for similar reasons and it only applies to busy times
