Next Door Self Storage Reviews (%countItem)

When I signed a lease for a storage unit in September 2018, their associate repeated several times how nice it is that there will only be one rent increase, two months after signing up, and after that the rent will stay the same until you move out of the unit. My rent was supposed to freeze at $31/month. There have been a couple increases and the rate is now $55/month. I have been too sick to address it until today. I spoke with "Kat", who denied repeatedly what their associate told me. Furthermore, ***provision #1*** on the signed lease agreement says, "there shall be no adjustment in the Rent payable hereunder." Kat also denied those words are in the lease (I have my copy). I resent being told I am lying, even when I offered to send them a copy of their own lease agreement. For me it is more about the principle than the money, although I am disabled, living on a fixed income -- every dollar means a lot to me.

Noel *** rented a climate control unit #1127 (5x15) on 9-15-19.

The lease is a month to month rental agreement and rent is due on the 1st of each month.

Noel moved in for a $1.00 for the remainder of September and given a discounted monthly rate for 2 months of $26.00 for October and November. The rent starting in December went to the current rate of $31.00. I have attached the Move in Special signed by Noel.

On 7-1-19 a rental rate increase notice was printed and mailed to Noel at the address on her account. The 30 day notice stated the rate is changing from $31.00 to $40.00 starting on 8-1-19.

On 2-1-20 a rental rate increase notice was printed and mailed to Noel at the address on her account. The 30 day notice stated the rate is changing from $40.00 to $46.00 starting on 3-1-20.

I have attached the customer notes showing the date and time stamp of these 2 rental rate increases notices mentioned above.

From time to time corporate will review customer accounts and make necessary rent increases when the current rates are higher than what the customer is paying. As an example, the current rate today

for a 5x15 climate control is at a discounted rate of $49.00 for 2 months then goes to $59.00. The current rate of $46.00 Noel is paying is still below the current rates today.

If you need anything further, please let me know.

Thank You,

Joan ***

Complaint: 14196626

I am rejecting this response because:
This is the same reply that I got when I spoke on the phone with her. I paid the rent increases because I have been in crisis mode and unable to address my concerns with their office until recently. I have been struggling with many health and financial problems since cancer treatment, and I had to move my belongings to storage when I could no longer be caregiver to my father with dementia. Then last summer until late January I was helping my stepfather transition into his death, and I had pending surgery that was just canceled yesterday because of COVID-19. I am also fighting the flu or COVID-19 currently for two weeks. None of that is anybody's fault, but this is why I didn't call sooner and I just paid the bills as they came due. The woman on the phone never acknowledges my complaint that the original agreement was there would never be any rental price increases for the life of the lease. She just keeps repeating when they increased the rent and that I paid it and how it compares to other rental unit prices in their area. She never acknowledges or addresses my concerns. When I raised the issue that provision *#1on their own rental agreement says the rent will never increase, she just flat out said it does not say that. When I repeated it, she just tediously repeated the transaction history details. I attached a copy of that agreement with its provision in my original complaint. Again, despite all of my troubles over these years, my main concern here was that I entered into a clear agreement that was repeated to me several times while I signed the agreement, and its stipulations are in writing, and the original agreement is not being honored or acknowledged or addressed. I don't think it is good business practice and I don't appreciate being expected to accept it as status quo.

Sincerely,

Noel ***
