NICA inc issues paycheck settlements for independent contractor drivers that work with courier companies. They claim to also provide insurance, and for this they charge $29 every week deducted from the checks. I am have been with NICA for about ten years, and contractors have voiced many complaints, about all that money being deducted from our checks, and little or no service, plus terrible customer service. One time I was injured and I contacted NICA, [redacted] told me to, "Get yourself to a hospital". I had just been hit by a car and could not 'get myself' much of anywhere. They sell insurance to me from a company called [redacted], and provided me with no policy number or insurance card that I need to have with me if I go to a hospital. Please note that this is a very hazardous job and injuries are frequent and almost inevitable. When I contacted NICA about three times, first they told me to contact [redacted] insurance company for this information. I told them that since I am paying NICA, they are responsible. After three emails they send me a PDF file of a minimal or catastrophic coverage policy, that only covers death or dismemberment. They sent me a PDF image of a card that I had to print out myself, but it was more like a business card not and insurance card, since it did not have my name nor a unique policy number. I have been to the hospital at least twice for work related injuries, and the hospital has a problem with this if there is no policy number. I propose that NICA should not in fact be deducting over a hundred dollars a month from contractors merely to issue a paycheck and provide what is either minimal or fraudulent insurance! Problems with NICA have been persistent throughout, but as a convenience the courier companies seem to use this merely to issue the settlement checks. When I was severly injured and contacted [redacted] insurance directly, I only get an answering machine every time, and they never called me back or contacted me in any way. All they do is issue a letter on one page that says insurace will be handled by [redacted], and that is the extent of what you get from them, no more.
