Dear [redacted],We reiceved your letter regarding [redacted]s 04 [redacted].To start from the beginning the car was towed into my garage with a no-start condition. The vehicle was diagnosed to have a faulty Crankshaft Position Sensor. This sensor is positioned inside of the motors timing belt...

which ment it required removal of the timing covers and belt. Upon removal of the covers it was apparent that MULTIPLE teeth were missing off of the timing belt and that it also was in need of replacement. We contacted [redacted] with an estimate of approx. 9003. We spoke to him about weither or not it was a good idea to put this much money into the vehicle due to the overall condition and other repairs the vehicle would need at inspection, which was coming up. --- [redacted] decided to go ahead with repairing this vehicle. Due to the vehicle being 31,000 miles past the service milage of the timing belt it was replaced along with the rest of the timing components. He also had been driving the car while it was at least 2 Qts low on engine oil, which I notified him of and suggested changing the oil as it was over 15,000 miles past the sticker on the windshield. He declined the oil change and did not want me to fill the oil to the proper level. The vehicle was repaired and was running properly following the repair. We had the car running for over an hour and drove it for approx. 10 miles to verify that it was running properly. Everything was fine and we released the vehicle[redacted] picked up the vehicle and called the next morning saying it had stopped running. We towed the vehicle back in and found it to not have any compression. We looked further and found the new timing belt was shredded. We were unsure weither it was a faulty new timing belt, or debris from the old timing belt which caused the new one to fail. Being that [redacted] uses interference engines this ment that pistons contacted the valves and some damage occured. We removed the cylinder head and sent it to our machine shop to be reconditoned. The motor was put back together with all new parts and again the engine was run for approximatly 1 hr and test driven 10 miles. We checked the timing multiple times during this procedure and every time it was spot on.The vehicle was picked up from our facility and [redacted] was not heard from again. I went above and beyond what most people would do to attempt to repair this vehicle. Every step was taken to assure that the best possible job was done and there would be no other issues. We have used this machine shop for 30 + years. They do very high quality work and ive never had any problems with anything they've done for me. The repair to the customers cylinder head alone cost me 723$ + 10 hrs of labor I paid my tech to R&R the cylinder head. Most places would have sourced a used cylinder head, and reused most of the other components.[redacted] stated in his complaint the latest problem was "not anywhere near what nonamakers were working on". Based on that, idont feel that we are responsible for this issue. He did not contact us about an issue, nor give us the opportunity to look at the issue that arose. Im very sorry to hear about his problems, but dont feel that iam liable for any damage to his vehicle and it sounds to me from his complaint that the engine had another internal problem which he was told was not anywhere near or related to our repair. Since we werent given an opportunity to look at the problem I can only speculate as to what happened.I do know that the vehicle was not properly maintained AND when it came back it still had no oil on the dipstick. Meaning he obviously hadnt added any and was driving the vehicle. Going off of the information given and my knowledge of this vehicle and owner I would imagine that he never added or checked the engine oil and seized the motor.Since the car experienced the latest issue several weeks after leaving my business, and that I wasnt given an oppurtunity to look at it I dont feel that I should be held responsible for reimbursing [redacted]. If I am found to be liable for this iwould like to know how many miles were put on the car since our repair, When he changed the engine oil, and what the problem currently is. Its a shame that he experienced another major issue with this vehicle however we spoke to him prior to initially repairing the car that it was probaly not worth putting this much money into the car as it was not properly maintained and for all intensive purposes "worn out".I am enclosing copies of the bills I recieved to repair the vehicle. Some background of my business is that ive been here since 1962. I have never had an issue like this before. We perform this type of repair regularly without issue.  Complaint: [redacted]
I am rejecting this response because:
I guess this becoming an I said, they said situation. Although some things Mr. Nonamaker said are true, most are not. I did drive the over the suggested mileage to have the timing belt changed, I did not drive the vehicle with no oil in it. First off, they did give me a price on the work. They NEVER tried to talk me out of spending the money for repairs. And they never mentioned what I would need for inspection, I had the car towed there on 6/25. They diagnosed the problem and I got the car back on 6/28. They had mentioned they had the car running, but I don't recall them saying they drove it. I drove the car home, approximately 3 miles. I drove it to my part time job 1/2 a mile.  I went out to the car on my break, started it up, and within 15 minutes the car had shut down again. I called Nonamaker's and explained what had happened. They came and towed the car back in. They took all the covers back off and saw the extended damage.  They said they would have to send the valves out to be shaved down After not having a car for almost a week, and borrowing several family members cars. I asked Nonamker's  if they would pay for a rental car. The owner said with the money it was costing him to repair the damage to my vehicle, a rental car was out of the question. So after 2 weeks without a car, they finished working on it. I received the car back on 6/9. The mechanic said to stop back in a few days to check the fluid levels.  I stopped back in on the 12 of June. They asked how it was running. I said it's running good, but the oil light came on on my way here. They came out and looked at it and said when did you change your oil last. I said, I know it needs to be changed, but I didn't drive the 15000 miles the owner is speculating  I normally change my own oil and filter. That weekend I changed the oil and filter. The oil light went out. I ran the car for about another 2 - 3 weeks. Everything seemed okay. Then the engine light came on, so I stopped back in and saw Matt, one of the mechanics. He put a tester on and found there to be no compression.  He got the light to go off, and said it could be an 02 sensor, or you could need a catalylitic converter. he said set your trip meter and see how many miles you go before it comes back on.  I drove about 150 miles before the light came back on. So I stopped at another garage to get there opinion. They said I needed a new catalytic converter. They could see the engine work I had done, and asked what i'd had done. So I explained to them what I had done I had them do the converter and several days later the oil light came back on. So I took it back to the garage and had them do diagnostics on the engine. And they determined it was the engine work I had originally had done was causing the issue. They recommended replacing the motor. They also said when you remove the heads from an engine, your supposed to change the oil, because of all the different fluids dripping out of the heads. Nonamaker's never did this. One of the fluids that leaks out when removing the heads is antifreeze which when the engine was put back together circulated through the engine ruining it. I know there is probably no way to prove any of this, because I was forced to buy another vehicle, and no longer have the [redacted] Santa Fe. But if it's at all possible, I would like to keep my complaint listed on your website to avoid this happening to anyone else.             Thank you for responding,       [redacted]
