I was contacted by this business via phone in mid-September, 2016. I was told that for a fee, they could renew several of my current magazine subscriptions for a bargain price. I mentioned "In These Times," American Prospect," and "Yes Magazine" as candidates for future renewal. Their representative mentioned Atlantic Magazine several times, and I said that I had previously subscribed to Atlantic but had not renewed it because I found I had no time to read it. She repeated "Atlantic" several times, and each time I said I did NOT want it. She mentioned an initial charge for this service of around $29, which I understood would be incurred once annually. Around a week later, I got a written notice from the company that I'd be charged around $29 a month for NINE months! Then they listed only two of my magazines - In These Times and American Prospect (and not YES magazine. I called them to complain and told them that their charges FAR exceeded what the cost of the two magazines would be. We ended the call and I agreed to research what those two magazines would cost if I renewed directly with the publishers (which turned out to be only $19.95 annually for each). In the meanwhile, the company rep called me via voicemail that I had been subscribed by them to Atlantic Magazine for FIVE years (and I didn't want that magazine in the first place) - and it was not listed on the confirming letter they sent me! I then called their customer service again and informed them that the company's letter to me didn't even mention the Atlantic Subscription - which was quite expensive. I said I wanted to cancel the whole contract, and this second representative quickly said she'd cancel it and she game me a confirmation code.

These people cold-called me, sold me some magazines. At the time it was useful, I had no problem with it. Before my current deployment for the National Guard, I, on three separate occasions, attempted to cancel the subscriptions. The first two times, I realized that they hadn't cancelled it when they called me about my card information no longer being valid (intentionally replaced my credit and check cards). Both of those times, I told them, yet again, that I no longer needed the services went through the steps to cancel my account. Then yesterday, more than 9 months since the first cancellation, a collection agency begins calling my home on their behalf. My family relayed the message to me, and when I called to get it sorted, they claimed that I owed them over $450.

This experience has ruined me on ever having a magazine subscription period. I'll just get what I need and want from the store, and I implore you to do the same.

Review: I am acting on behalf of my 93-year-old father who received an unsolicited 2-year subscription to the magazine [redacted] While he is not being billed for it, the magazine is not welcome and is full of tobacco advertisements.. This an ELDER issue, as once they have add my father's name to a mailing list service, he will get more solicitations and most importantly, fall prey to money solicitations. I am unable to track down how he got his contact information in the first place. He lives in a retirement community, [redacted]Desired Settlement: Stop this magazine subscription
