Northern Virginia Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Reviews (%countItem)

I visited the office of Northern Virginia Internal Medicine & Pediatrics, LLC on 3/22/2019 and had a of tests run, including blood tests. The office called me either later that day or the following morning saying that I needed to come back to the office and have some of the blood tests repeated because, “something went wrong in the lab.” I thought nothing of it and returned to the office on 3/23/2019, as requested.
My lab test results from 3/22/2019 came in after which I received a bill from *** Medical Laboratories which I paid in full ($169.54). Shortly after receiving the first bill from *** Labs, I received a second bill from them for the lab tests done on 3/23/2019. This bill for $388.24 was for the repeat lab tests done on 3/23/2019, but Northern Virginia Internal Medicine & Pediatrics had also submitted them the previous day. Needless to say I was confused, so contacted *** Labs to try to figure things out. I was told that all lab work submitted for 3/22/2019 was complete & there were no problems in the lab with my submitted samples. So, I called Dr. G’s office on 6/5/2019 to try to find out why they called me in to repeat blood tests they’d already sent to ***. I was told by the receptionist at the time that he’d pass along the message & have someone contact me. No one did, so I called again on 6/24/2019 and left a second message, then called on 7/1/2019 and left an extended third message to the Billing Dept. of Northern Virginia Internal Medicine & Pediatrics asking to have someone contact me about this issue. Again, no response. Finally, on 7/29/2019 I called Dr. G’s office again & spoke to Destiny, the receptionist. I explained in great detail what was happening, why I needed clarification on this, how many times I’ve requested help from the office & how frustrating it was to be ignored by Dr. G and her staff. I also let Destiny know that if I didn’t get a response, I’d purse this with the Revdex.com. No response ever came.

Northern Virginia Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Response • Oct 15, 2019

To whom it may concern,
I am writing in response to your letter regarding a complaint from ***. *** did come in for an appointment with blood work on 03/22/19. The phlebotomist, who was employed by *** Lab, apparently called *** and told her there was some issue with her blood work and that she needed to return to the office to have her blood re-drawn. The phlebotomist did this on her own initiative, which she often did to avoid having patient's results delayed further. I was not aware of the "issue" with the initial bloodwork.
*** presented at my office on Saturday, 3/23/19. Blood work is not routinely done at our Saturday hours, but to avoid inconvenience, I drew her blood work and had a special pick up arranged. Two issues complicated achieving resolution. First, the phlebotomist, during the summer 2019, during *** requests for action, never returned to our office and *** Lab had no communication with her and she was fired. Second, I had inadvertently put the wrong birth date on *** second lab order, which should have resulted in communication with our office to ensure the blood work was assigned/charged to the correct patient. I am not aware of any communication from *** Lab trying to address this discrepancy. Again, I have no idea if there was communication between the phlebotomist and the lab. Apparently, *** Lab ran the second lab and chose to assign it to *** despite conflicting birth date information.
Another confounding factor is that I have had 3 changes of staff, including the Billing Department since January 1, 2019. I was staffed with college students during the summer of 2019 and have realized that many messages were not passed along. I had become the default "billing department." I do have a message, dated 07/29/2019 with my responses to my staff to follow up on *** issues dated 08/04/2019 and 08/5/2019. Reviewing our e-mails, it does not appear that my staff followed through with contacting ***. As I have previously stated, the phlebotomist never returned. After the phlebotomist's departure we had multiple replacements who were not familiar with the issue.
Last week, the current phlebotomist and I tried to figure out what happened: 1) why was *** called back for more bloodwork when apparently her original bloodwork was received and processed, 2) why was the second blood work processed and charged with incorrect information. Unfortunately, we could not resolve these questions. I spoke to a representative for *** Labs and they have agreed to cancel the charges for 03/23/2019.
I do not make any money or receive any reimbursement on lab work. *** Lab draws, receives, processes, bills for and receives payment for all blood work. *** Lab should have identified that there was an issue with the second blood draw and charges. *** Lab should have eliminated these charges when contacted by ***.
I appreciated the frustration *** has experienced with the lack of communication from myself and my office.
Please feel free to contact me with any further questions.
Regards,
Mary Ellen G, M.D.
