Thank you for contacting me regarding the complaint against my business, Northside Liquor Company. Hopefully, my explanation below will shed more light on this issue. The customer that filed complaint did come into my store in October, 2017, and asked about redeeming a $20 gift certificate. I...
explained to her that I took over the business effective 1/1/2017 and I am no longer honoring gift certificates sold by the previous owner. On January 1, 2017, I posted a notice on the door and at the cash register that effective March 1, 2017, I would no longer honor gift certificates sold prior to January 1, 2017. I keptthis notice posted for 3 months so customers would be aware of the new policy. During that time (January- March), I redeemed numerous gift certificates sold by the previous owner and I understand its good PR, but when there's a considerable amount of money out there it could bury me by giving away free stuff if I didn't put an end date to the liabilities. In regard to her statement about the building, I did not purchase the building. I purchased the BUSINESS. And by purchasing the business, that does in fact make me the "new owner''. As far as me being in the pictures from the grand opening, it was because my former girlfriend owned the business and I was there to support her! I, in no way, legal or otherwise, owned the business prior to 1/1/2017. Her liquor license and sales tax 10 can attest to that. Furthermore, I had no way to know if gift certificates were sold 2 weeks prior to the sale or how many and I have no records of these transactions. As I stated above, in good faith, and trying to keep customers happy, I truly made an effort to honor gift certificates from January thru March. However, continuing to honor them for an indefinite period of time is not financially feasible for me. I am very sorry this customer is upset and although I can understand why, I hope she can see my position on this as well. Sincerely, Brian W[redacted] Northside Liquor Company
