**Note: this is a patient mill NOT a doctors office** Just over a year ago on a Thursday I scheduled an appointment with Nova Medical Group in Ashburn for a sharp pain I was experiencing in my testicles and groin area. The pain was so intense that I had trouble walking. The nurse came in to ask me questions, check my vitals and then she returned twice more to apologize for the long wait which was around 40 min before the doctor came in. Prior to him entering the room I could hear a 5-10 minute conversation he was having about his upcoming vacation. Upon entering the exam room the doctor shook my hand & sat down on a stool and did not get up until he left the exam. That's right, he didn't examine me in the exam room. I told him my symptoms & that I thought it was a hernia. He proceeded to tell me about his upcoming vacation, which he would be leaving for directly after this "exam". I told him about the pain I was experiencing in my testicles, something I was at first uncomfortable talking about. His diagnosis was "you are probably right about the hernia and if the pain gets worse then come back and we'll send you to have a sonogram.” I inquired, "do you need to take look [at the area]” waved his hands " oh no, that's ok. If it gets worse just call and schedule another appointment." He never laid a hand on my body other than to shake my hand at the beginning of the appointment. I hobbled off the table and shuffled back home feeling confused about what had just happened (or didn't happen). The pain, as excruciating as it already was, did get worse. The next morning I called to schedule another appointment, next opening was Tuesday, sonogram was ordered for Monday.
Tuesday: I again shuffle into NMG and check in at the desk. After sitting for 10 mins or so I am called back and told the doctor I had made my appointment with had left for the day, before finishing her appointments. They (somewhat rudely) offered an urgent care doctor that was available to see me instead. I thought: great--after all it was them who had cancelled the appointment I had scheduled/waited for--obviously they should amend such an error by finding me substitute care at their cost. At this point my pain was at a level I have never experienced. Immediately this dr looked at the area and found an extreme case of epididymitis. An antibiotic started to reduce the inflammation/pain within 12 hrs. Thank God.
The epididymitis has since returned and been treated several times by a specialist, however the lasting effects of the time I was untreated may have caused a chronic situation.
Recap: Doctor #1 did not physically examine patient. Allowed the patient’s self-diagnosis, calling for $1000+ of tests without ever prescribing medical treatment for pain or infection.
Doctor #2 failed to show up for scheduled appointment. No cancellation notice or substitute doctor.
Doctor #3 ( Urgent Care ) Treated symptoms in timely and caring manner. A+…however, I wish I would have know doctor #2 would cancel and stick me with a bill for urgent care—I would have gone to urgent care in the first place and skipped the $1000+ unnecessary bills for negligent care.
Billing - I received bills for the scheduled visits and the sonogram within weeks of the initial visit, paid them in full. 9 months later I received the bill for urgent care and finally went back to tell my experience to their billing department and chief clinical officer. I felt that since they canceled, they should remedy by charging as a regular visit. After many calls to the chief clinical officer over the troubling experience and level of care I received, she sent me an email that stateed “ Your account has been put on hold and will not be sent for collections until the matter is resolved”. The only communication I have received from NMG since has been a blue letter indicating that they no longer wish to serve me as a patient. I received another letter from a collection agency indicating they had sent my account into collections. I have called, emailed and left messages. The collection debt is under a couple of hundred dollars. I am waiting for an apology from Nova Medical Group and the doctors involved. No communication has been made on behalf of NMG to resolve this issue.
If this were a car that was leaking oil and I said,”I think it’s the radiator”, If the mechanic replaced the radiator without checking where the leak was coming from what would you conclude? a:) the mechanic doesn’t know that radiators don’t leak oil? b:) the mechanic is trying to take advantage of his client by replacing the radiator, knowing the leak is coming from somewhere else, or c:) the mechanic doesn’t care either way and is willing to do what the client says without giving a professional opinion, as long as it means more business for the mechanic.
