Nu Perspective Design & Landscape Reviews (%countItem)

Matt N is the contractor I have ever dealt with. We paid him in full and he never finished the job. Do not use this company you will have to beg for him to complete and it still will not get done. I have heard every excuse under the sun of why he never shows up when he swears he will be there the next day and never shows and never calls. He came recommended by one of our customers. unfortunately for our customer he is also getting the run around from Matt.

Matt N came to us upon a recommendation from a friend, for whom he did a simple patio a few years back. His workers are experienced and do great work. Unfortunately, Matt as the owner of the business is inconsistent and disorganized. We gave him allowances because he claimed to have acute health issues during our project. However, he seems to make an appearance only when money is due. If you pay him that day before his scheduled arrival time, he doesn’t bother to show up.
We started the job request with a desire to create a small patio next to a new pool, replace an existing patio to match the new travertine patio, and use pavers for a small basketball area in a side yard.
He kept pushing for us to have artificial turf, but we declined and never even brought that up as a desire even initially. When we realized his company was named Nu Lawn, we realized why he was pushing this. He offered to redo the irrigation for the lawn, and mentioned backyard lighting as well. We assumed he was used to all sorts of varied jobs for a landscaping job. He brought a designer with him (though she did not present her credentials) to the house at the 3rd visit, and this was a relief because he at that point had not scheduled a meeting to discuss details of the design plan.
We thought, assuredly, a design would be forthcoming. However, he never offered one, even when his team arrived to start the digging and demo. He claimed later that we declined ‘a 3-D design’ that he had offered, but we assume he got us confused with someone else, because no design was ever offered. As I told him, “I would never decline a design plan.” I had to draw one up myself and presented that to his team.
Surprisingly, even though there was a lot of stone removal and demolition of an old patio, he never arranged to have a dumpster rented from the city to be placed in the alleyway. One of his men asked us, “How are you planning to get rid of this?” They knew and we knew that they would have to dig it up 2 times if things kept us this way. Our perplexed response was, “Don’t ask us! Ask Matt?!”
After the first day, we didn’t see Matt again for over a week. He texted on Friday and asked if his guys could come on Saturday; we agreed, but they didn’t come the next day and there was no word from him. At one point, his guys left at noon on a Thursday—again, no notification why. We didn’t see them Friday, or Saturday or Monday. We texted Matt that if he didn’t have guys show up the next day, the side yard and electrical was off the plan. We didn’t have any confidence he would finish the work in a timely way. The guys did show up and we conceded to let him do the entire project.
Because he never showed up to supervise, it was up to us to periodically check in on his team, and answer questions about details of the layout that arose as the project progressed. Thank goodness covid allowed us to work from home, and fortunately, I speak Spanish!
Overall, we were very happy with his workers who were straightforward and hardworking men, doing outside work in the hottest time of the year (July). But after a week of really hard work in 100 degree weather, they didn’t show up. We got a text from Matt that they quit on him! In fact, the impression we got from different occurrences is that Nu Lawn is not managed well.
What took the cake was that at the end of project. Whenever he asked for the next installment of payment, he had it in record time—maybe 15 mins after the text/email request. However, out of the blue he scheduled what we later found out was “the walk through” [he never called it that until afterwards] and we paid the last installment---minus $2000 because the hauling of the demolition was not done, and it was a huge pile in the city utility alley. We let him know that the last amount would be paid when the work was done. His office manager berated us in an email and made vague threats and false claims. We were shocked! We know this is the standard—the full amount gets paid when ALL the work is done. This went back and forth. He finally arranged to have the hauling done—he had to contract with another company, and it took them 2 trips and many hours to get it all. We paid the $2000 immediately, and then guess what happened? He said after sending the “final” invoice that he still needed to be paid an extra $1000 for closure of the wall. This was a standard 2 columns and additional 9 concrete cinder blocks for 2 low walls. We had to request a breakdown of how such a small portion of the job could possibly cost $1000; of course, he never got us the cost until that moment (we had assumed it was tallied into his “final total”), and the details he provided did not seem reasonable to us. We requested confirmation in an email that this in fact was the last additional cost, and paid him just to end the hassle.
The yard looks great and we are happy, but it left a bad taste in our mouth thinking of the unpleasantness, unreliability, inconsistency and unprofessionalism of Matt N. We would never recommend him. You can get similar patio work with a more professionally-run business.
And we have to tell our friend, “What were you thinking??!!!”

Nu Perspective Design & Landscape Response • Aug 26, 2020

At the end of the day this client was is mad because they had to pay for work that was added to the project even after the contract was signed the friend that recommended me to this client did advise me to be careful be they have a reputation for not wanting to pay there contractors... this is why I was demanding payment up front , also the client asked us to not make and noise from the hours of 11:00 am to 1:00 pm because the husband was teaching so we would pull off and get other things done . I understand that they wanted me there ever day but that’s not the way it works I wish you all would look at the work we did for them and see if there complaint are accurate, at the end of the day he just didn’t want to pay for work that was done and that’s why he’s upset .

Customer Response • Aug 27, 2020

Sadly, by his response the owner of Nu Lawn Perspectives has provided yet another compelling reason to not use his services - he is a liar. Instead of doing the respectable thing of accepting responsibility, he chose the dishonorable route of resorting to lies to save face. Let us take his claims one by one and demonstrate factually how these are lies and also observe the fallacies in his arguments:
1. First let us take a look at the facts and see if his claim about our tendency to delay or avoid payments is true by examining the history of our payments to him:
First invoice was received via email on June 25, 2020, and was paid on June 26, 2020 – within one day
Second invoice was received via email on July 16, 2020, and was paid on July 17, 2020 – within one day
Third invoice was received via email on August 7, 2020 at 9:25am, and was paid on August 7, 2020 at 10:21am – within one hour
Fourth invoice was received via email on August 10, 2020 at 3:07 pm, and was paid on August 10, 2020 at 3:31pm – within a half-hour
Fifth (final) invoice was received via email on August 11, 202 at 11:54am, and was paid on August 11, 2020 at 12:33pm – within one hour
The above facts show that we are extremely quick and diligent in our payments, and are quite confident that we are among the fastest and most reliable customers of this business when it comes to paying bills.
2. He claims that we have a reputation of not wanting to pay contractors. Besides the above facts that clearly contradict this statement, there are two additional problems with this statement. First, it assumes that we have engaged several contractors in the past. We have lived in this house for over 7 years and Matt is the first contractor we have ever used. Until now, we have had nothing done to this house, which was already updated by the previous owners. Prior to that, the only time we used a contractor was 14 years ago for our previous house. That contractor was a pleasure to work with and he will readily testify to the fact that we were extremely prompt with all our payments (similar to the promptness of the above payments). So, having used just one contractor 14 years ago, how does one amass a reputation of any kind? Secondly, the fallacy of this argument is also laughably ridiculous. Just think about it. If you are an owner of a business and you have been forewarned that a prospective customer has a reputation for not paying their contractors, would you want to engage in any kind of business dealings with such a prospect? No smart business owner in his right senses would want to deal with people who have a reputation of not paying. So, his manufactured lie on this point is not only despicable, but exposes himself to being sued for libel by both, us the ones he claims to have warned him about us. Such a lawsuit would surely be the end of his business. Luckily for him, we are not the litigious type. He is well advised to refrain from falsely smearing people’s reputations just to cover up his dishonorable behavior.
3. He claims that we did not want to pay for work that was added to the project. In fact that is quite ironic, considering that we were the one who asked him on the last day of the job to be sure to send us a final bill. When he sent us the final bill, we asked him if it covered everything and he said “yes, it covered everything”. Then, three days after we made the payment on that “final” bill, he sent us another bill for an additional $1,000 without any clear explanation. So, being naturally surprised at receiving a bill when we were assured that “everything was covered” in the final bill, we asked for a detailed explanation. Instead of providing the detailed explanation, he simply said it was for the two concrete 6-foot pillars (to hold a side gate) without demonstrating how something so basic could cost so much. So, we pressed for the detailed break-down of labor and materials. Again, instead of just providing the details, he threatened to vandalize our property if we did not pay up. We replied politely that we want to be fair and since he refused to provide us with a detailed break-down of the materials and labor involved in installing these two pillars, we were willing to pay him $500 for it as we thought that would be more than reasonable for installing two concrete 6-foot pillars. After receiving unsavory replies from him, we just decided to pay the $1,000 to end the unpleasantness. Note that even though this was a disputed amount, we paid it within two days of receiving the “surprise” bill. Would someone with a “reputation” for not paying contractors pay a disputed bill, and that too as promptly as we did?
4. The 11am to 1pm accommodation he mentioned was for just one day (and we thanked him for it). That does not in any way explain the long/unexplained absences we experienced on multiple occasions, sometimes for several days in a row.
So, please be warned. This is a disreputable business that cannot be relied upon for promptness and honesty, and will resort to lies if exposed. There is a reason why his team quit on him right in the middle of our contract.
What is truly ironic here is this. We believe in second chances, and barely a couple of hours before receiving this libelous response from him we had discussed the possibility of removing our negative review at the end of this month. Now, it appears that it would be a valuable service to the community at large for us to leave these comments and thereby help prevent other innocent customers from having to go through the ordeal we have had to go through.
