Ocean Medical Center Reviews (1)

Review: I had a severe cold on Sun Dec 15th to the point where I could barely breathe. I googled "urgent care facilities" in my area and when the Ocean Care Medical Center in Pt Pleasant NJ came up, I went there. I handed my Ins card to the receprionist and was told to have a seat. My copay for urgent care visits is $40. I saw a Dr and was diagnosed with severe bronchitis, was given a breathing treatment and Rxs; I had a 101 fever. I was told if I didn't feel better in a couple of days to come back. I did on Dec 19th and had more breathing treatments. When I received the bill, it was for a copay of $125 times the 2 vists. I thought my payment was a total of $80, not $250! When I called to dispute this I was told that there are signs that state visits are billed as $125 ER services. I explained that even though there are signs, people who come there (including me with a 101 fever) are not reading signs. That when the receptionist took my card, she should have advised me of the fee. I also explained that I recived a survey from them that the title of which is " "Urgent Care Survey" and tried to argue that this was a deceitful practice and by their own admission it was an "urgent care" facility not an ER. I have spoken to at least 6 people (I have all the names and dates) since my first call on Dec 31 at both billing and guest services and have been told over and over "there are signs" and there is nothing we can do. I responded to the survey saying that they are misrepresenting themselves and still nothing. Although they say they will discuss with a manager, no one even calls me back. I finally called them today and they are giving me 10% discount; this is unacceptable. This is false advertising and I certainly would not have come back a 2nd time had I known I was being chgaregd $125 and not the expected $40. I finally paid the $225 today because I do not want this to go into collection. I also informed them that I was filing a complaint with the Revdex.com.Desired Settlement: My bill should have been $80; they charged me $250 but gave me $25 back in the 10% discount.

I would like another $145 refunded back to me.

Response:

Please find the written response to the complaint identified as [redacted]. We at Ocean Medical Center take our patient and families’ concerns very seriously. When such a concern is brought to our attention it is our policy to conduct a comprehensive review by a multidisciplinary care team. Our ultimate goal in this regard is to achieve patient satisfaction and quality care, in addition to ongoing improvement in healthcare.

Please be advised that the Ocean Care Center is licensed by the New Jersey State Department of Health as a satellite Emergency Department. As you will note in the attached photos, several prominent signs are in place to identify the Ocean Care Center as an Emergency Department. As part of the internal review of the complaint, the Supervisor for the Patient Registration team has informed this office that the staff is scripted to say “Welcome to the Emergency Department" to each patient who enters the Ocean Care Center. As governed by the EMTALA law, and in the spirit of the mission of the emergency department, the medical and professional staff of the Ocean Care Center may not deter any person from seeking medical attention based upon a lack an inability to pay for servces.

Finally, please note that both the Meridian Health Patient Accounts and Ocean Medical Center Guest Relations offices have consistently, and on several occasions, advised the patient that the medical services were rendered, and the billing was accurate for the services provided.

We appreciate you bringing this patient’s concern to our attention. If I can be of further assistance in this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me at [redacted].

Response:

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:

I was not told this was an emergency visit. When I gave my insurance card, I was also not told of the fee.

The survey I was sent was titled "urgent care visit" not how was your "emergency visit".

I will NEVER use this facility again.
