Gastroenteritis- disease process of severe bloody vomiting and diarrhea that can cause life-threatening dehydration and sepsis) and being treated for HGE at another vet hospital. Dr. P[redacted] obtained a complete and detailed history, performed a thorough physical exam, and recommended diagnostic tests. [redacted]’s blood test results showed dehydration and high sugar (hyperglycemia) and his urine showed both sugar and ketones. Dr. P[redacted] DID discuss with [redacted] that the test results were highly suspicious for diabetes, but his sugar levels were not as high as we typically see. She admitted him for stabilization and further assessment of his sugar and other test results. With intensive treatment, [redacted] began to stabilize and his blood values began to become more normal. Dr. P[redacted] advised Mrs. Harbstreet, that the potential diagnosis for diabetes was less likely. Over the next 24 hrs, [redacted] continued to improve with supportive care and was discharged from the hospital Sunday June 4, 2017 around 7:30p. --------- I received a message from the receptionists on Wed June 7th that Mrs. Harbsteet called with complaints about [redacted]’s insulin. I spoke with [redacted] that night. This is a copy of [redacted]’s medical record with my notations regarding that conversation: [redacted] felt that dog was misdiagnosed with diabetes and that she should be reimbursed for the insulin she purchased from [redacted] Nolovin NPH insulin is only $28. I explained to O' that after reviewing [redacted]'s medical records that an elevated BG, glucosuria and ketones is definitely suggestive of diabetes[redacted] wanted to know why Dr.P[redacted] didn't "wait and see if dog got better" before sending her to purchase expensive medication. I advised ** that animals with diabetes can get dramatically worse over 24hrs if left untreated. I offered to give her a credit on his acct for $28. O' reports she went to[redacted] bc that's where she always goes for herself and it's not her fault that she didn't look around. Advised O" that it's not "our" fault that she didn't look around either. It's not our responsibility to know what each pharmacy charges for insulin, but I was trying to be considerate of her point of view by offering a credit for the cost of the insulin if she had bought it at [redacted]. O' thought this was ridiculous and said that my offer was ." At this point I advised ** that I was no longer offering her a credit and she could bring [redacted] elsewhere. (Dog is doing well)---MLWS {8:31 PM}” In [redacted] complaint , under “Desired Settlement”, she doesn’t understand why we didn’t have Insulin in the building. There are many different types of insulin necessary for treating different stages of diabetes and in different species. We do not have the case-load of “new diabetic patients requiring hospitalization” to justify having the various insulin products on-hand; especially with a 24-hr [redacted] less than 5 miles away. The [redacted] she chose to patronize is actually directly across the street from [redacted].
