Review: They failed to tell me that moving my household into a storage unit would make the claim service null and void, several items were broken, items not d

I hired them to move my household into a storage unit until I could find a place to live. 12/17/12, it was a not to exceed bid. They took longer than anticipated, then presented me with an over time charge, which I refused to pay. I believe at that point, the delivery men decided to tell me that the move was complete, and they left several boxes on their truck. I didn't check it as I never dreamed this would happen. My storage unit was in a coded environment, alarmed, and I was the only key holder. When I finally accessed the unit to move my items, I found 2 things broken that were not broken when they left my house, and several boxes of household items and decorating items and shoes that never were put into the unit. When I filed a claim, they denied it immediately stating that by putting it into storage, it negated the claim. I was never told this, even though I had inquired about insurance and they quoted my move into the storage unit. The claims manager, [redacted] would only communicate via email, he never returned my calls. When I asked for his managers name, he wouldn't give it to me and his reply was "I am the claims manager". So, I went another route and called the president of the company, [redacted] and left him a message. He never returned my call. I feel they have been rude and unprofessional in handling this claim. I also feel wronged in this case. Their lack of customer satisfaction is appalling. I have pictures of the broken items, and emails from the claims manager.Desired Settlement: I would like the items broken to be replaced or fixed. And a settlement for the boxes that were never placed in my storage unit. Several of the items are not able to be replaced. I had a quilt made by a friend when I was going through cancer, and now she has died. Plus several turtle pieces that were one of a kind.

Initial Business Response

Contact Email: [redacted]@mayflower-sac.com

Ms. [redacted] used our services to move her items from her residence in auburn to a mini-storage in Auburn in December of 2012. The service was performed and the items placed in the mini-storage. In August of 2013 she called to file a claim for some missing boxes and broken items. She had moved the items from the unit to a new residence in Auburn using other people and not our service. Our claims manager informed of 2 things. She had not filed a claim within the 9 month window and if she was missing items or items were broken on the move we performed she was obligated to inform us in December when we performed the move. Finally, she had now moved the items to a new location therefore who ever had moved the items would be repsonsible for any items claimed broken or missing and she had not purchased any valuation it was 60/lb minimum liability waiver. My claims manager advised her of this and I also advised here of these issues when I returned her phone call to deal with her complaint.

Final Consumer Response

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)

My items were in a storage unit. I COULD NOT KNOW THAT ANYTHING WAS MISSING OR BROKEN UNTIL I MOVED THEM OUT OF THE STORAGE UNIT, AND TO MY CURRENT ADDRESS TO GO THROUGH EVERYTHING. Their comment is stupid in that respect.

And the owner lied in his previous comment, he never returned my calls. The number provided to them was a cell number which records every call received and/or missed. His number and the number of the company were never recorded on my phone, other than when I called them trying to find out who to contact.

I still believe that I am due compensation for my missing items and to repair the broken ones. I feel they misrepresented themselves in the area of coverage.

Final Business Response

No one ever told Ms.[redacted] that moving the items into the storage unit negated the claim. It was her moving them out via herself or another moving company that negated the claim. She had to file a claim if she had one before the items were moved a second time by a third party other than OFMS.
