I have installed several of these units over the past 10 years and have not had a single wear related failure. one guy serviced his own lower gear case and left the gasket off the screw, allowing water to inte the case and cause it to fail, and another left the drain and fill screws out over the winter allowing moisture into the case, causing a bearing falure.
Over all these units give good service life and make it affordable to keep some of the older boats on the water.
