Thank you for your inquiry in reference to our patient *** *** of ***, ** - your ID number ***We were working with ***'s father, *** *** regarding the status of his son's accountWhile we cannot discuss medical information relative to this patient, it is important to
note that we followed our internal policy for self-pay patients appropriatelyHe was charged appropriately at the self pay rate of $for his office visit based on the fact that the father presented no insurance and indicated he would pay out of pocket.The balance bill he received was due to the fact that once the patient was seen during the examination, a medical reason and diagnosis was found and this would become eligible for billing his medical insurance companyIt is our policy to wait to reduce any self-pay balances in case we do find that the claim should be billed for a medical condition vs a routine eye exam.We spoke to Mr*** on June 15, and attempted to explain this to himWe explained that his son's exam should have been billed to his medical insurance based on the findings and diagnosisThis would in turn potentially reduce his out of pocket expense to only a copay and/or any deductibleHe became verbally abusive, using profanity a number of times and would not let us finish the explanation which we believed would be in his best financial interest.The balance of $will be adjusted off his account, as per our policy - we did not have a chance to complete the adjustment prior to a statement being sentWe had an issue with our statement run that day and didn't allow for the day cycle - his appointment was on He shouldn't have received the statement prior to the beginning of July.His account has been adjusted appropriately and we have sent a letter to Mr*** explaining his right to file a claim with his medical insuranceHe will need to seek reimbursement directly if he chooses to do so as we will potentially risk timely filing issues etc...Thank you again for letting us explain our policy and guidelinesMr***'s son was our patient and was treated with great care and kindnessThis is the goal of our practiceWe do not appreciate Mr***'s accusations or abusive language in dealing with his billWe attempted to assist him and he chose a different pathHis lack of understanding of proper coding and billing guidelines left him frustrated when we attempted to share this information.Sincerely,Nancy S***, CEO
