I was a previous customer and when I called back after receiving a pre-approval notice I called in and the guy kept asking me questionsWhen I didn't know the name of my landlord he said to call back and I kept telling him to hold on while I searched for itThen he insisted on me calling backWhen I started looking for it I heard him say "***!" in the backgroundAfter that I became irritated and decided not to proceed with the loanThese people should be careful who they hire because they're losing business by hiring reps that clearly don't want to be there

I spoke to a guy named *** today He was extremely rude and wouldn't even let me complete my sentenceI told him I was irritated because it was the 4th time I had called and the had been transferred many times I told him I think someone had transferred me to the same place before and it wasn't itHe responded by saying I know what I'm doing And theIn a condescending tone said have a happy new year.So rudeNo way to talk to someone *** was very nice

Oportun is attempting to open its loan market to the English-speaking audience in the U.S., but loan applicants should find one of their competitors instead [***] for loans in the 30%-50% APR rangeOpportun's promotional posters say they need only a government-issued photo ID, proof of address and proof of income, but after they spend minutes with you on the phone asking more than the usual number of questions and repeating their prepared spiels, they also need four references that they will call before they approve your loanAfter waiting more than two weeks and making numerous phone calls to check whether they had reached my references, they approved me for $[although all of my other payments are on time]When I said I wanted to think it over, they pulled the offer Oportun had the most exhausting process of any loan company I have ever dealt with for the least satisfying result with the least accommodating customer service

Company is dangerous they make you sign tons of paperwork and does not specify terms. BEWARE! Reps lied about your tems. Better off get a loan from [redacted]

They do not appear to have a good policy for taking/making payments. I received a letter stating I was behind on payments and that my next payment would be double (for amount past due) even tho I have kept up with all payments. and when you go in to pay, I am told that thier "policy" only allows them to take a payment for a specific amount. They also did not allow me to pay over the minimum amount on multiple occasions due to their "policy" . its seems like their policy is to pray on individuals and harass them. They will call you when you are at work to ask to make a payment when it inst even due yet. I have told them to not call me between certain hours and it still continues and is frankly a nuisance.

Make sure that you are located close to one of their servicing locations because you can't fulfill the whole application without visiting one of their locations which means that if you are not close to one you might end up having to drive close to an hour without a guarantee that you will be approved.

Customer service is horrible! They pass you around from rep to rep. They all tell you different things so you never get the same answer they are liars and your interest rate is different with every payment and when you ask they don't know why. Crooks and liars!

They cheat you out of your money! They make it really hard for them to actually help you and all they say is well our "policy" doesn't let us do this or that. They give you all the wrong information possible. Even if you are a good customer and ALWAYS make your payment on time and NEVER miss one they make no effort to help you. Worst loan store ever.

Initial Consumer Rebuttal /* (2000, 7, 2014/12/23) */

My experience applying for a loan with Oportun was horrible.
References-First, I was told the references I provided would not be contacted and that their names would only be kept on file. The next day when I called to check the status, I was told they were waiting to hear back from my references they called who they said they weren't calling.
I provided name, phone number and years I've known them. Yet my references were asked to provide their home address, my address, whether they could pay the loan off if I didn't, and how many people depended on my check. I found this to be very invasive, inappropriate and embarrassing, especially asking my friends to provide their home addresses.
False Advertisement-I received a letter in the mail which stated there would be no credit check yet a credit check was part of the process, and the amount of the loan was up top $2500. On the phone they said it could be up to 6,000. I needed a minimum of 2500 but asked for 5000.00.
The letter stated the company was founded by Hispanics for the Hispanic community. All of the calls received were in Spanish even though I told them I preferred English. I got the sense that the company is preying on a selected community, taking advantage of their offer by but not complying with advertisements and not informing the customers what they will do with the personal information you provide.
After a few days and many calls and confusion, I received a text I was approved and was asked to call. I called and was offered $300.00. I was absolutely shocked, angry and resented that they wasted my time and sacrificed my dignity with my references for $300.00.
This company is a payday loan place like all of the others in disguise. They should be held accountable for their false and misleading advertisements and should be ashamed of the way they conduct business.

I was referred to this company by an acquaintance. I had language barriers from the jump. Fair enough, judging by the company name - that is where they are at this time. The interest rates are exceedingly high. I saw the the rates and I signed on the dotted line. Making payments via 3rd parties (e.g. 7-11) wasn't always successful. There was no option to pay your bill online. For the rates I was being charged (39%), that is unacceptable.
I made the final payment today. They only accept cash payment. I drove to my bank and then to Oportun. I let the clerk know I was paying my balance in full. She asked if I minded if the change be in the form of the check. I thought she would be printing me out a check that I would walk away with. I did after all just hand her $3500 in cash. After the transaction was completed, she told me the check would arrive in approximately 4 weeks. I'm not happy at this point. On my way to my car, I glanced at the receipt. The return may take up to 4 to 8 weeks.
Ladies and gentlemen, if you can charge me interest daily on my loan at 39% - then you can sure as heck return my change due plus 39% over the span of 4 weeks. Shame on you!
Rule of 72 people! Definitely not a company that gives you a hand up.

I applied by phone with Oportun. They asked the standard questions you expect for a loan but they also asked things like "How many people in your household do you support?" "How much is your credit line and how much available credit do you have?" " Were your born in the US?"
I felt uneasy giving this info but I needed the money. I was on the phone answering these question for at least 40 minutes. Although I pressed the English option, the person seemed to struggle to understand me and kept asking me to repeat things. I was told that I met "pre-approval and to bring documents to the store, which I did. At the store, I was told that I would be notified by the end of the day. A day passed and I hadn't heard anything. I had provided four references and none of them were ever called. I received an auto dialed call on the morning of day three which advised that my application was still being reviewed. On the night of day four, I decided that it was a scam and would call in the morning to withdraw my application. I was transferred multiple times until I finally ended up on the phone with another gentleman that barely spoke English who explained that I didn't need to withdraw my application because it had been denied. I do not believe that- my credit score is 678. I said okay fine, please delete me from your system then. I find it suspicious that I was never notified by phone or mail that my application was denied. It was only when I called in to withdraw my application that I was told it was denied. Stay away from them; they are unprofessional and very secretive about the progress of your application.

I've had absolutely nothing but problems with them since week 1, not only did they damage my credit on something that was their fault ( I got a late payment added even though they were supposed to be taking the money out of my bank account, instead they took it out and returned it then decided to wait another 10 days to finalize the payment.) I found out about this obviously a little too late once they started with placing calls to my references and the lovely 98 point drop on my credit score. Never ever do business with them avoid them like the plague. I'm almost done with the payment on this an guess what still getting harassed.
