Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Reviews (1)

Review: I broke a wisdom tooth and my regular dentist referred me to Drs. [redacted] Assoc. to have it extracted. I called and made an appointment, and gave them my [redacted] insurance information. When I showed up for the procedure, they told me that the cost would be $89, and I said fine. The oral surgeon extracted the wisdom tooth, but also knocked the crown off the tooth next to it. They said that they didn't have any permanent cement in the office to put it back on, and I would have to go back to my regular dentist to have it permanently cemented, which I did, and I was charged $51 by my regular dentist for this.

Then I received a bill in the mail from Drs. [redacted] Assoc. for an additional $92. I called and spoke to someone, who was no help, so I asked for, and spoke to the office manager. I explained that I had been told the procedure was $89 and I had given them my insurance information, (and after the $51 crown re-cementing), now I received a bill for $92. She said "that $89 was just a guesstimate, and we've been working with our front desk to tell that to patients, but we still need time for them to get used to it". I told her that was ridiculous, a "guesstimate". I also told her that if they've been in this practice for years, they must have had hundreds of patients with [redacted] insurance having wisdom teeth extracted, and they should know the price. I said that since I had already paid the $51 for their mistake, I would be willing to split the $92, but I didn't think it was fair that I pay the whole $92....she said no way, and that if I didn't pay it, she would send it to a collection agency. I put the $92 on my credit card, but now I'm fuming. This is no way to run a practice, when $89 turns into $232.

Desired Settlement: $92 credit on my credit card

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:

If the office manager had bothered to read what I wrote, I called and made an appointment days before, and gave them my [redacted] insurance information, which gave them ample time to look up the information and know what [redacted] would cover.

When I showed up for the procedure, the person at the front desk told me "the cost for today will be $89", and

I said fine. They did NOT "make their patient aware that this is only an estimated amount that will be owed, and after claims are sent to insurance and payments are made, if any additional balances are owed, we send a statement to the patient". There was nothing said about it being an "estimate", or that I would be billed for anything else. The person told me that the cost for the procedure was $89, and I relied on that information.

They are correct that I signed a form (grudgingly, but what could I do at that point?) acknowledging that there could be damage to surrounding teeth (nice loophole), and if the office manager would re-read my complaint, I did not dispute the $51 for the re-cementing of the crown (I merely mentioned it in my complaint).

The office manager even admitted "that $89 was just a guesstimate, and we've been working with our front

desk to tell that to patients, but we still need time for them to get used to

it". That to me is NOT an acceptable explanation. I even offered to split the $92, and was rudely rejected, and told that it would be turned over to a collection agency if I didn't pay it, so I put it on my credit card. I should be reimbursed $92.
