Owasco RV Rentals & Sales Reviews (%countItem)

On April 23, 2018, we gave a $500 deposit to the following company to rent an RV vehicle, specifically a deluxe "***" van conversion, for 12 days beginning September 24, 2018 and ending October 6, 2018. On August 29, 2018, the balance of $2692.25 was charged to our Visa account.

When we arrived on September 24 to pick up our rental, the dealership had just moved to a new location on the weekend and everything seemed quite chaotic.
As we did an initiation tour of the vehicle with the Owasco employee *** , she checked off that the gas tank was full, that the propane tank was full and the freshwater tank was also full. An alarm (like a low smoke detector battery) continued to go off the whole time we were touring the vehicle and a technician was called to look at the vehicle.
Unable to figure out the problem, the vehicle was taken back into the service bay where it was ascertained that it was a "low battery signal". Obviously the battery had not been charged for our trip and as we were soon to discover, all those "full" tanks were not full at all.
After waiting for over an hour, the van was returned to us but when we started the engine, we noticed that the gas tank was only registering as 3/4 full. We asked Ms. to note this on the rental form and she told us that we should return the vehicle at the same gas level.
The first night of our trip was spent at our daughter's house in Chateauguay, Quebec where we ate dinner and had showers. By the second night, we camped in New Brunswick where we realized that wer had no hot water. The van was supposed to be equipped with an "on demand" water heater but no matter how long we waited, there was absolutely no hot water coming out. For that night and the following day, we took showers in the campground bathrooms and filled water bottles from the campground bathrooms to wash dishes clean up.
The following day, September 27, we called back to Owasco to register our problem and we were told to go to *** in Digby, Nova Scotia, to get it assessed. No one was able to help us that afternoon and we were told to come back the following morning. After waiting for over an hour the next morning, a technician told us that a part in the water heater was defective and needed to be replaced. They did not have the part in stock and he told us that it might take a day or so to the part after it was ordered and it would then take "a while" to install.
We had only rented the van for 12 days and we decided not to wait. We expected to be reimbursed for our inconvenience, time wasted and kilometres wasted getting to the store in Digby.
This was not to be. After spending close to $3800 on this 12 day rental, Owasco is offering us only $135. 60 including tax. This is based on a one day rental fee of $95 and $25.00 a day insurance.
Owasco has since repaired the vehicle, acknowledging that the water heater was defective.

Desired Outcome

Because water heater was defective before we picked up vehicle. Fresh water tank plug had cobweb, gas tank 3/4 and propane 1/4 full. All confirmed in an email by Ms. and fixed since. But to late for us.A reasonable monetary compensation for inconvenience and extra expenses for private camp sites with paid showers.

Owasco RV Rentals & Sales Response • Oct 19, 2018

The client rented a 2018 *** from us.

During travel the client experienced a concern with the water heater. Our staff was in continuous contact with the client including scheduling a service appointment for him to have the concern addressed. The client chose not to proceed having repairs completed. Upon our return inspection it was found that an item required a simply 15 minute adjustment to correct their concerns. The client went against our recommendations of getting the repairs completed and instead subjected themselves to going without hot water.

Our terms & conditions clearly states:
Breakdowns and Repairs - The renters of the motorhomes and vans or the participants in an all-inclusive tour or caravan acknowledges the possibility of a mechanical failure or breakdown and acknowledges that such occurrence is an inherent contingency associated with the operation of the vehicle used, and that such contingency is beyond the control of the Company. The renter or participant agrees to hold the Company harmless from and against any and all loss of time, transportation costs, inconvenience, loss of food in the vehicle and any and all expenses resulting from such contingency in the event of mechanical failure or breakdown other than the CDR/VIP insurance. The Company will make all reasonable efforts to assist the renter to obtain help or arrange for repairs, subject to the business hours of local repair facilities. The company will not accept responsibility, nor will it issue refunds in excess of $75.00 unless prior authorization to proceed with repairs in excess of the sum has been granted by an officer of the Company. Collect calls are accepted

We met and completed all protocols which are clearly outlined in our Terms & Conditions above.

We did go outside of these terms & conditions and offered the clients compensation simply out of Goodwill.

Unfortunately the clients declined the compensation and demanded a 50% reimbursement of their reservation and if we did not meet their demands ***.

We have refunded the clients a fair compensation ***.

Customer Response • Oct 22, 2018

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
Our whole point was that the water heater in this vehicle was NOT working when it was rented to us. It did not break on the journey - it never worked from the beginning.
When we took the vehicle to the propane dealer in Digby Nova Scotia that was suggested to us by Owasco, we were using our rental time and our kilometres that we were paying for. That dealer in Digby did not have the part to fix the water heater and we were told that we would have to wait a day for the part to come in after it was ordered and then it would take a few hours to install. wasco claim 15 min? In Digby we waited more than hour just for technician to show up and no repair. As we had rented the vehicle for a limited and set time, we chose not to wait and we were therefore without hot water for the entire rental period of 12 days.
Owasco, obviously have the part on hand, but didn't fix it BEFORE they rented it to us.
This vehicle was defective when it was rented to us, that is our point and we believe that we deserve to be treated fairly and given adequate compensation for our inconvenience and for Owasco's.
Again point is it was rented to us broken.
