At this point I believed that all of this whole process was happening to buy time on the bad work that the roofing company did One of the last interactions I had with [redacted] at my home in October of 2014, after losing his temper with me for being frusterated that he has to stand by this work, he bald face lied and said " this flashing under the siding is half way up your dormer, there is no way it is the flashing, its the gutter, your welcome." To Whom It Concerns, Please accept this in response to the response given by Ms. ***, following our original response to her complaint. The first issue I would like to address is the plywood decking, we did replace the plywood decking as part of a change order, however Harpis Roofing did not perform the installation of the skylight. On many occasions I have attempted to sit down to discuss the issues with Ms. ***s home, and would like to come to some type of resolution that meets her needs as well as maintains the integrity of our work. The company would be willing to work with her to correct the issues she claims are causing her leak issues, but unless the issues that I outlined to both Ms. [redacted] and [redacted] , the water will continue to infiltrate the home. The incorrectly built overhang, by others, on the dormer is the primary source of the water infiltration, including the gutter that was pitched wrong way, also installed by others. The gutter was also completed clogged with environmental debris on the morning of my visit. At my request [redacted] , [redacted] territory manager and [redacted] ***, [redacted] and Siding Divisions Manager, have explained to Ms. [redacted] the water infiltration issues she has had are result of the above mentioned incorrectly installed overhang. Harpis Roofing does over $2,000,000.00 a year in the roofing business and in the last ten yearswe have had less than ten complaints, and certainly none to this extent. When we have had previous complaints or issues, we have worked with the client to fulfill our contract and ultimately satisfy the client. I certainly understand Ms. ***s frustrations, as I too have been very frustrated by the issues she has been having. The company has returned to her home every time that she has contacted us, to try to rectify the issues for her. Specifically, In October of 2014, I went to her home personally, after receiving a frantic telephone call at 4:30A.M. to see what the issue was. r was greeted at the back door of the home by Ms. [redacted] yelling at me about water coming into her home, andrightly so. I did not lose my patience with Ms. [redacted] until approximately 45 minutes into the visit, when Ms. [redacted] continued to scream and yell at me, using profanity. I showed her the source of the water infiltration and at that time she began to yell again that she should have been told about it 18 months prior. The fact of the matter was and is that Ms. [redacted] was made aware of the issue long before that October morning, as was [redacted] , acting as her agent in communications with our company. For her to continue to try to place blame on the company for her failure to act is not appropriate to say the least. Once again I do not accept the findings stated in the complaint. The findings are incorrect and the water infiltration issue was not caused by Harpis Roofing. If there is anything else that I can do to help in this matter please feel free to contact me at the number above. Regards, [redacted] Harpis Owner Harpis Roofing

To Whom It Concerns,  In 2012 Harpis Roofing was hired by [redacted] to install a new roof. We were not hired to install a new roof down to the rafters; we were hired to install a new roof from the decking up. Now that being said I would like to respond to the so called issues that were in...

the report provided by [redacted]e P. E. First let's talk about the manufacturers specifications. Manufacturer's specifications are guide lines to be used under normal installation conditions. Sections of Miss [redacted]s' roof were not normal installation conditions therefore it is up to Harpis Roofing (or any other contractor) to make field adjustments as needed so a watertight installation can be completed. Being an engineer, I would have thought that Mr. Hoppe would realize and or understand that. Now to the issue at hand; Harpis Roofing did receive calls from Miss [redacted] and her roommate pertaining to leaks over a period of 18 months. Every call was handled in a professional manner, along with a site visit to address the issue. Over that 18 month period we inspected every inch of that roof for any kind of issue that would have warranted a leak. I explained to her on more than one occasion that we should remove the skylight, build a curb and reinstall and re-flash the skylight. l also explained to Miss [redacted] that the overhang needed to be extended and that thegutter was pitched the wrong way. Miss [redacted] insisted that the problem was with the flashing and not the issues that were done by others I had brought up to her. At that time I proceeded to remove siding and shingles on the west side of the house where the dormer, semi flat and sloped roof met to see if there was any sign of water infiltration. There were no signs. We also removed the siding and corner board from the west side of the dormer to see if there were signs of water infiltration. There were no signs. We removed the copper flashing that covered the sill from the west window sill. There was no sign of water infiltration. We have had a [redacted] area representative and the salesman who represented the company from where the product was purchased come out and look at the job. Miss [redacted] was told that the roofing system was installed properly and that the skylight was not meant to be installed on a semi flat roof. They suggested that the skylight be removed and reinstalled on a curb. They all also agreed that because there was no overhang on the dormer and the gutter was pitched the wrong way that that was the cause of the water infiltration. Miss [redacted] once again disagreed and said it was the flashing around the base of the dormer. I told Miss [redacted] that even though I didn't install the skylight, I would in good faith remove the skylight and install a curb and re-flash the skylight, but my responsibility stopped there. (Harpis Roofing did not build the overhang, install the sky light or install the gutters) Miss [redacted] refused the option and insisted that it was the flashing around the base of the dormer. So the representative from [redacted] suggested that I coat the flashing around the base of the dormer. I ordered the white coating. When the coating was delivered we came out and coated the flashing and we also coated around the skylight. I received a call from Miss [redacted] when the next rain came in, telling me that the leak was still present. I told her that at this time I was going to order a black Bitumen Modified roof coating and coat the entire semi-flat roof. That was done. The next call was 4:30 in the morning when there was a terrible downpour. I got up, called in one of my men and headed to Miss [redacted]'s. She showed me where the leaks were and I proceeded to go up onto the roof to investigate. I found that the gutter was clogged with leaves and the water was running very slowly. At that time I started to remove the siding from the dormer where the siding stopped and the fascia/soffit started, exposing the plywood sub-siding. The back side of the siding and plywood sub-siding were soaked. I went downstairs and brought Miss [redacted] up on the roof to show her. After seeing it for herself, her comment was I should have known that was the problem 18 months ago. In conclusion I do not accept the findings stated in the complaint. The findings are incorrect and the water infiltration issue was not caused by Harpis Roofing. If there is anything else that I can do to help in this matter please feel free to contact me at the number above. Regards,  [redacted] Owner Harpis Roofing

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below. This company did not fix the issues with all of the "non-conforming" flashing.  Also being that [redacted] wasn't preasent on the roof install, he would know that all CDX was removed and replaced and that the skylight was improperly installed by the roofing crew Harpis had on the job.  It had been wrong from the start, being the laborers didnt install the flashing kit, and thus Harpis roofing came back to install correctly.  The response [redacted] has tried to give to the issues with my home are false.  This company decided to "fix" the flashing they installed, by putting a patch over the corner of my dormer running up the wall corner.  Silicone was used on the 3" flashing and dabbed around in concerned areas over the years.  When the representative [redacted] ( Sr. Territory Manager)  from [redacted] came to my home and steared me away from the windows and flashing and said that a coating would help, I believed them.  I took [redacted] inside of my house to show him what was going on , and  he stated to me " I can't even guarantee this is my product on your roof."  At this point I believed that all of this whole process was happening to buy time on the bad work that the roofing company did.  One of the last interactions I had with [redacted] at my home in October of 2014, after losing his temper with me for being frusterated that he has to stand by this work, he bald face lied and said " this flashing under the siding is half way up your dormer, there is no way it is the flashing, its the gutter, your welcome."
I decided to contact another roofing company to help me.  Manufactures set guidlines to be followed, but [redacted] REQUIRES 5" vertical and horizontal leg on step flashing as well as turning the leak barrier 5" up the wall behind the step flashing.  The step flashing on my home only extends 3" up the wall.  Also where the shingles meet the low slope roof they start too close to the intersection and should have been heald back AT LEAST 10".  The corner of every window on my dormer had flashing that Harpis roofing installed.  Each window has exposed areas that the cooper was bent in by nails that were hammered into and bent the flashing, thus causing space variences .25"-.75".   The copper flashing does not even turn up under the windows or trim.   Since [redacted] let me know that the gutter was the issue I had the pitch corrected.  The house still leaks from the improperly installed flashing.  The gutter, as coincidentley as the other complaint was,  was not the issue.  Iam now working with a Lawyer, who is helping others against Harpis Roofing, INC,  to further this into Arbitration and fix my house.  This has been the worst experiance with a business that I have ever had.  I too am a business owner in Columbia County, and I build my business relationships on consistancy and sincerity, and maybe my Home wasnt the biggest or most lucrative job, but to have a business owner bully me for the past 2+ years is unnacceptable.  I have email after email from the office manager telling me how sorry they were for not coming one month to the next.  I'd like to understand why the flashing is not "halfway up the wall" like [redacted] had so firmly yelled at me about in our last meeting.  Its 3".  In reguards to the skylight Harpis Roofing did offer to curb the sky light, but instead they decided a seal coat would fix the issue, based on our meeting with [redacted] rep. [redacted].  First a white one painted around the skylight and dormer, that didnt fix it so the black seal coat was supposed to.  AS far as the skylight, its hard to say if it even is the skylight because it leaks around the sky light ,above it, below it, but not directly inside of it, its back to the flashing.  My home was a total gut project and remodel, the original sales man, Bill, from Harpis told me when he bid the job " if this house was simple and had only one pitch, I would tell you to have your friends do it.  But this roof is complicated, so you need the professionals to do it".  Again I believed right from the start that Harpis was going to take care of my home.  [redacted] Harpis was never on site to bid the job, or to install the flashing. Knowing that the flashing is the issue now, in hindesite, a red flag should have been when my interior contractor had to build the "cricket" for my roof because Harpis Roofing Laborers didnt know how to.  I had to call, and ask for a refund on that part of the bid as well because they didnt tell me, my contractor told me.  If this is the representation of Craftsmanship of Harpis Roofing, INC. there are other jobs that people just deal with, my home has beeing leaking since 2012.  I cant " Deal with it" any more.
