On August 28, 2017, a dog being boarded overnight at our hospital in Collinsville, IL, got out of both his 6-foot-high dog run enclosure and a locked, screened window in the building.  The dog’s escape was not discovered by our staff until the following morning.  All staff (and even some...

of their family members) came in immediately to search for the missing pet.  Although we cannot be certain what happened after the dog’s escape, the pet was unfortunately discovered deceased nearby the hospital later that morning. We have reviewed, over and over again, the events that led up to the pet’s escape. All enclosures and latches were working properly, and normal hospital procedures were followed. We come into work each day with the sole purpose of providing quality care to our patients, and service and compassion to our clients. Even though we don’t feel any process or staff member’s actions resulted in the death of this pet, all of us feel tremendous remorse. Moving forward, we will not let this event be forgotten and will continue to look for ways to improve our practices.
