Review: Before leaving the lot with my rental I noticed that there was a notification that there was low tire pressure in one of the tires. I went back into the establishment to make them aware of the notification (I'm assuming that due to the rain and the fact that they were closing) at that point no one came out to double check the car, they just stated that the notification was a reset issue and that it would go away. Needless to say I left the lot with the vehicle, and 2 days later a good samaritan called my attention to the fact that the back tire was really low, and we found a nail in the tire. I contacted the rental company to let them know about the situation and explained that I wasn't pleased with this bc anything could have happened to me on the road and I am pregnant, travelling with an 8 mth old and a 7 year old in a foreign place. The response I got from the customer service agent was apologetic, but the response I got from the Manager ([redacted]) was anything but. He proceeded to blame me for the nail in the tire that clearly was the culprit for the slow leak and the low tire pressure notification, and told me that replacing the car (with an older car, that drove horribly) was the resolve that he saw sufficient for putting my life and the life of my children at risk. He also then proceeded to let me know that his staff was trained to NOT have to come out and double check the tires after I came back in to let them know of the notification that was showing on the screen. He took no responsibility for renting me a vehicle that wasn't safe for the road.Desired Settlement: Anything that will show that they are taking responsibility for their actions, and putting myself and my family at risk. Any type of reasonable compensation will show me that they are taking this seriously and that I am not just being brushed off as though my life doesn't matter. I am not looking for anything for free, I am just looking for them to be held accountable for their actions.

Response:

Thank you for choosing Payless Car Rental San Diego.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

As per our phone conversation.

The said rental tire deflated several days after leaving the property.

The rental was inspected and noted, a sensor reset was needed to reprogram the indicator only.

It can not be determined that the rental contained a nail in the tire

prior to leaving nor can it be determined that it happened during the

course of your rental.

Regardless your rental given roadside care and no additional charges were added to your agreement.

In addition you were given a complimentary upgrade.

Should you have further questions feel free to contact myself at [redacted].

thank you,

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

As I stated in a previous message sent to Revdex.com, sending my complaint to the site that committed the offense will not resolve this problem as the manager himself is not willing to take responsibility for their actions. They have stated on many occasions that they are 'ok' with what happened. It is up to someone to step in and hold them accountable for their actions to ensure that moving forward things will be done differently to ensure the health and safety of their customers.

Thanks again for your help.

Response:

There is no further action to take in this matter by our facility.

All rentals are cleared and pre-inspected for rent when parked in the ready stalls.

The rental was found to have a nail imbedded in the tire days later while in the renters possession.

The rental was exchanged out in an ample time frame.

The renter received a complementary upgrade as well.

Road hazard is an unforeseeable occurrence that is why the assistance program is in place.

Thank you

Review: It was a huge SCAM! I went in to rent a car that I was quoted for $8 a day and was told I needed a copy of my proof of insurance card if I dont want theirs. They tried to charge me $23 a day extra for insurance and or $10 a day extra to add my dad because he had his insurance card. Horrible customer service. I said I see nothing in writting for what you are tal*ing about. He loo*ed things over and said well, its not there but I can print you something. I left. In that time, I got a hold of my insurance company and they faxed proof of insurance to them. In that time, the representative I was wor*ing with cancelled my reservation without my *nowledge. I return 5mins later, he watches me being helped on by someone else. Im wor*ing with this lady for at least another 15mins and then she says, oh did you cancel? NO I didnt cancel. Oh well when you wal*ed away, he cancelled it. I said well reactivate it. This is absolutley insane. She said, you can do it, try to go bac* online and boo* it, and handed me my papers bac* . I was outranged. I as*ed for her name and the other representative name and her manager. She would not give me any of her information or his but gave me a business card with her managers name on it, saying he *nows who is on the schedule. I did not get a rental. Rather I wasted 2hrs of my life dealing with a corrupt business and rude people. It was an awful experience.Desired Settlement: I want their "charges" and "policies" stated on their website, on pricelines website and in their store. I want an investigation. This place seems li*e a huge jo*e!

Response:

Hello,

We do apologize for the inconvenience. We do require proof of liability when renting a vehicle. We see that initially you did not provide our counter agent with proof of liability. It shows that you did leave our office, and our agent assumed that you didn't want the vehicle anymore so he did close out your reservation. We see that there was a misunderstanding, and to fix it we would li*e to offer you a free upgrade on your next visit. Once again, we do apologize for the inconvenience and we loo* forward to your business. Than* you and have a great day!

who is [redacted]? I was only given a name of [redacted]. Further, it seems that I the customer am at fault which is not the case. It was horrible experience, I would never ever rent from them again. Thus, I do not want a free upgrade. I have spread the word though social media and word of mouth how awful this company is. It is a huge huge SCAM!!

Hello,

I do apologize that you feel that way about our company. I,[redacted] am a part of Payless Car Rental's Management Team. What would made you happy?

Review: The business is now located at 3355 Admiral Boland Way R179, San Diego, CA 92101

I prepaid $157.48 on the Payless Car Rental website for a car rental with unlimited miles. I printed out the Rental Agreement and website information.

When I executed the Rental Agreement, the Payless San Diego web pages (including "Policies") did not restrict traveling to Arizona. Likewise, the Payless general web pages did not restrict traveling to Arizona.

On 3/26/16, I attempted to pick up the car. [redacted] demanded that I pay $35 extra per day to travel to Arizona. I said this was not in the Rental Agreement nor on the website. [redacted] was unable to show me this information in writing anywhere--not in the Rental Agreement, nor online, nor anywhere else. I refused to pay the additional fee and asked for a refund. [redacted] refused to give me a refund.

I contacted Payless online to open a complaint ticket. I submitted my complaint. The response from [redacted] included "Geographical Restrictions/Travel Limitations" that were NOT on my Rental Agreement and were NOT on the Payless web pages at the time I executed the Rental Agreement. I asked [redacted] to provide the URL for his information. [redacted] refused to provide it and instead closed the complaint!

In my complaint, I provided [redacted] the URL to the Payless San Diego "Policies" and told him it did not include any policy information. It was virtually blank.

In addition to printing out the Payless website pages, I also took photographs of the web pages. Furthermore, I took 15 minutes of real-time video of the web pages. These documents, photos, and videos prove the URL for the Payless San Diego Policies did NOT have the Geographical Restrictions/Travel Limitations that [redacted] said I agreed to. Witnesses also viewed the pages.

Shortly AFTER I informed [redacted] the San Diego Policies page was blank, it was populated with policy information.

I repeatedly asked for a refund which [redacted] has refused.

The response by Payless Car Rental states, "The following information is posted in the rental page online for the San Diego location:..."

Review: I booked a pay less car through travelocity. I was promised a total price of $160. With taxes. When I was given the statement at the car rental place it said $223. I asked two salespeople why it was so high. They said California taxes. I contacted travelocity who said this was not true. Pay less would not cooperate. As it turns out they had given me extra insurance which I declined previously! I did not know this until I was back in my hometown.

In addition I had to return the first car due to cleanliness and 70,000 miles plus heavy damage to the car. I got a new rental that had major dents, dirty upholstery, and $30,000 miles. It also had a tire light on and beeped constantly. I was told this was normal. I have a four year old so I decided to just use the car.

After my trip I wrote to pay less and asked for a full refund due to price discrepancy, vehicle condition, and sales misrepresentation. I was told to provide my personal car insurance proof which I have never been asked for from a rental company.Desired Settlement: Refund of the $223.00

Review: I made an reservation with Payless Car Rental through Airport Rental Cars website for pickup on December 8, 2013 at 4:30pm and returning to the same location on December 10, 2013 at 4:30pm .

My reservation # was : Payless Car Rental Confirmation #: [redacted] for $26.36 total price of the rental . However I was billed $31.16 When I called payless I was told that as a courtesy all customers are billed $1.95 per day for roadside assistance. I was not informed or offered roadside assistance at the counter when I picked up the vehicle . As I was running late to the airport I could not ask and wait to speak to the manager on duty.

I did call once I was back in Salt Lake City and spoke to a manager who agreed to reverse those charges on December 10, 2013 as of today December 10, 2013 I have not received the credit . I have called to the location 2 times the latest today.Desired Settlement: I would like to be refunded $1.95 x 2 Days and taxes included

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted] and find that this resolution would be satisfactory to me. I will wait for the business to perform this action and, if it does, will consider this complaint resolved.

It is unfortunate that it took you (Revdex.com) to get involved for them to issue an refund. As I started in my initial complaint I first called on December 10th and nothing happened , that is why I called Payless again on December 17th and also filed an complaint with the Revdex.com.

Review: I rented a car from this company on 11/26/2014 when I was visiting San Diego from [redacted]. The rental office never informed me anything about California toll road. When I returned home, I was shocked to find out a $62.39 unauthorized charge by Payless. It turned out to be a $5.15 unpaid toll charge while I was visiting and with penalty it came to $62.39. While I was driving on California's high way, there was never a toll both to stop and pay any toll. I was not aware there was any toll involved. This company still never refund me the $62.39. Now I'm also have to file claim via The Toll Road.Desired Settlement: $62.39.

Review: I rented a car from Payless Car Rental in San Diego, California from 4 - 11 June. When I returned the rental I was told that I shoud receive my deposit back of $250 within 2-3 business days. When I called to speak with them on the 14th of June I was told that the deposit was released on the 11th. I contacted my bank and I was told that there was not a deposit pending from this company. I then called back the next day only to be told that I needed to speak with the Manager. When I finally spoke with the Manager he told me that the reason I have not received my deposit is because I used a debit card; however, there is a form that can be sent to my bank to speed up the process. This was all on the 16th of June. Once I got them the fax number and spoke with the representative she said that she would take care of it. It is now the 27th of June and I have yet to receive my deposit back from Payless. I did, however, get a unauthorized charge of $55.56 posted to my checking account. This is unsatisfactory.Desired Settlement: I would like the refund of my deposit back from this company in the form of a check due to me not trusting the electronic practices or people.

The worst place to rent a car. Over the phone they said us a very cheap price which was $90 for two days including insurance. And when we went there in the morning, they asked to pay $165. Are you kidding me? Since we have planned our trip and booked hotels, we didn't have time to check with a different place so we had to pay $165 instead of $90.

They don't explain anything and the car we rented supposed to be unlimited milage and when we retuned the car, they charged another $205 due to milage. They did not tell anything like that before we rented. All together we paid $370 for two day.

If you want to rent a car from them, give yourself plenty of time and go there in person to get the proper prices and information.

The most expensive rental place even if the name is Pay Less, one of the biggest joke in San Diego.

Shuttle was slow. Line was long, Upsell treatment at the counter was misleading and overly strong. They didn't have the car I reserved and the replacement car was at ZERO gas on the fuel gauge. I was told to fill it up myself. After asking four different people they finally reimbursed me for the gas I left in the tank when I returned it. I would strongly recommend NOT to rent from this company!

Review: We were charged for an upgrade to a vehicle we did not agree to pay for because our original car was given away despite a phone call to Payless we made from the airport that our flight was delayed and their promise was to hold the car.

I have been attempted to resolve this by phone since March 2013 with promises for call back from "[redacted]", who has not returned my call. I called again today and was able to reach him and we discussed the issue and he said their is nothing he can do about it, since it was a verbal agreement between the desk agent and us. The contract we signed was not clear that we were agreeing to the upgrade but that the Chrysler 300 was the only car available at the time. The desk agent that we dealt with was difficult to understand and intimidating. The total bill was 351.21 which was paid on our credit card back in March and we are only asking for the refund for the upgrade charge of 79.75. Thank-you.Desired Settlement: Refund of 79.75 to cover the cost of the upgrade

Business

Response:

Thank you for choosing Payless Car Rental San Diego.

This was the first time this issue was brought to my attention.

The contract was written up back in March of 2013.

We had no prior knowledge that the renter was in disagreement with the charges because they received full use of the rental for one week.

The renter signed an agreement accepting the charges and maintained a copy for their records.

It is impossible to go back 6 months and recall conversations, we can only base our findings on the actual signed agreed charges.

This was explained to the renter.

We apologize for any confusion but this is a closed matter and should have been brought to my attention during the course of the rental and not 6 months later.

In addition our company phone number and email address are on the contract for immediate customer care as well as my personal cell, which is directly linked to customer service calls.

Thank you

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

I agree too much time has passed! My concern is that I have been trying to resolve this since March by directly calling the business and was repeatedly told that someone would call me back. I also had Capitol One, my credit card co calling and those calls they also have record of. We were verbally told something differnet than what was in the contract and I trusted they were being up front with us. I was verbally told it would be resolved so assumed it was. When I thought of it again and checked my credit card, no refund from Payless had been applied. I understand it is a matter of my word against your agent's word and I would appreciate the benefit of the doubt. I have never issued a complaint with the Revdex.com before for anything and hope I do not have to do this again. I was frustrated from the beginning about how we were interacted with for this whole transaction-not very customer friendly!

Regards,

Business

Response:

The points are:

1. you signed a agreement accepting the upgrade and its total charges

2. at no point during the week that you rented with the upgrade was this brought to management attention,

otherwise we would have taken you out of that rental car

3. all we have to go by is documented proof that the rental terms were agreed to in written format

4. you also forget to mention your reservation was picked up over 10-hours past the scheduled pick up time

Now with all these facts weighing against you...if you still feel in all honesty you would like a refund for the product

you had full use of! Then as a courtesy we will issue a refund.

Thank you

Review: I recently rented a car from your San Diego (downtown location). This is not about the agent as he tried to be helpful. During the course of conversation I mentioned I was driving to Yuma to take care of my (93 & 91) Dad and Mom. He informed me that it would be an additional $400+ dollars. I had already paid $150 so I was stuck. I do travel quite a bit and it was not evident on your website as to any out of state fees. I respectfully request a refund of my $400 dollars to get me back to the original $150 quote.

Review: Prior to making reservation, we called Central Reservations and asked if we can take car to [redacted]. The answer was "YES". We have a letter signed by the manager of San Diego location [redacted] with complete description of the issue. We called central reservation from the office again, and were given the same information regarding taking car to [redacted]- that it is allowed and the only requirement is to purchase [redacted] which is sold by San Diego Payless location. [redacted] informed us that they stopped allowing cars to [redacted] about 6 months ago, but probably didn't notify Central Reservations about this change.

This incorrect information ruined our vacation and made it much more expensive.

We had to leave our car at secured parking lot at the cost of $30, cross border by foot, took a taxi ($5) to [redacted] and rented a car for another $120.

We think that we are entitled to receive a compensation from Payless.

We contacted Payless via their website and were informed that we are not entitled to receive any compensation.Desired Settlement: Compensation for extra expenses and inconvenience.

Review: On Wednesday April 22, 2015 I had made an online prepaid reservation of $75.23 to rent a car for Thursday April 23, 2015 going from San Diego, CA to Sacramento, CA. The followng day when I went in to go pick up the rental, I was told I MUST purchase their insurance policy when I have my own. My total if I would've rented the car would've been around $200 plus a deposit fee of $750 on my debit card. I then saw a sign in their office that stated the car rental is only for Southern California and Las Vegas, which NO WHERE on the reservation confirmation or their website does it clearly state that I couldn't drive up to Sacramento without being charged more money. This was when they were going to try to add more fees on top of everything else. I turned down their services and asked to cancel my reservation and be refunded the prepaid amount because the amount of money they wanted from me kept racking up. The guy working there told me I needed to cancel my reservation online myself, which I don't know why he did that given he has all the information about my reservation in their computer system. The other guy working there said from his seat nonchalantly "We'll hold your reservation for an hour" knowing that I would run into other issues when I got home and try to cancel my reservation. Upon getting online and trying to cancel my reservation, I read that I forfeited my prepaid money to this shady company because I have to cancel within 48 hours of my reservation. I had only made my reservation the night before! I then called customer service because I was very upset that they took my money of $75.23 and wouldn't give it back. Customer service told me that on their geopgraphical section on their website it explains the terms of driving out of the area. I asked the customer service rep to please show me where I could find it because I was on their website at this time and I never found it and was told I could not get a refundDesired Settlement: I would like a refund of my $75.23 because they did not provide any services to me so why am I paying them for? And the way they handled my request to cancel my reservation in the office is very unprofessional. On top of that they have all these hidden fees and terms and conditions to suck the money out of you. This is the worst business I've ever dealt with! They are out to get you in every way possible for your hard earned money. Unfortunately I read Yelp reviews after this ordeal and I'm not the only one who ran into this type of ordeal. Very unhappy "customers" and the business keeps taking money from people for no reason! They need to be out-of-business! Even if I cannot get a refund, I want them to stop with their bait and switch advertisment. I am very very unhappy with this situation.

Review: How these people continue to be in business with their deceptive practices is beyond me. After I was ripped off by this company I looked at their Yelp reviews and 98% of reviewers gave them a single star. Most said if they could have given them zero they would. My nightmare started when they advertise unlimited mileage but it's anything but. Upon returning my car they said I drove out of the restricted area and charged me for 35 cents for all the mileage drove plus my rental rate and deposit. A three day rental ended up costing me over $700. No one at the counter explained this policy when I was picking up the car nor did they point it out on the placard behind the counter or the electronic pad you sign. When I call the facility to complain and dispute the charges they put me on hold every time and then not pick back up for 30, 45, 60 minutes. Customer service is none existent, the employees are rude and seem to go out of their way to offend their customers. The people at this location and the ownership are not reputable people and doesn't seem to rely on repeat customers because they rip you off real good the first time and don't have to worry about you coming back.Desired Settlement: I would like the additional charges of $579.81 for mileage be refunded to my credit card.

Review: I made a reservation for a rental car from Payless Auto Rental through Orbitz. The price I was given was 117.78. This was a last minute booking due to a family emergency so I called Payless directly to confirm the reservation and the price. I told them I would be driving to Arizona and would primarily have the car in Arizona. They advised that the price would be 117.78 and that I did not need additional insurance since my personal insurance was sufficient to cover damages. When I arrived at Payless the next morning I was told that I had to purchase additional insurance and the cost would be 412.80. Since I was rushing to a family emergency I had no choice but to pay the additional cost which included insurance.Desired Settlement: I would like to be refunded the additional amount I was charged over the agreed upon price of 117.78, which would be 295.02.
