Payless Tax & Business Solutions Reviews (2)

We decided to go to Payless Tax last year (2013) to support small business and keep our money local When I met with [redacted] and attempted to explain my tax situation, it was obvious she was not listening She projected her assumptions of my situation without allowing me to talk it through with her When I tried to give or get clarification, she responded curtly I also thought it was important for me to ask about her rates upfront; I knew how much other tax prep services were in the area, and wanted to ensure she was not unreasonable She told me it was a per-form cost, but she did not give me any figures They claimed to be “Pay Less” so how bad could it be? She asked me to put some receipts together and drop them off for her, which I did She did spend a few minutes teaching me how to simplify my documentation process, and offered to review last year’s taxes for free She found something minor from my tax return she wanted to amend (for a fee), and when I asked her if it would get me an additional refund, she answered with the statement, “I cannot force you to amend,” so I assume the answer was no She never really sat down with me and explained the preparation, but did it on her own and then called us in to sign and did a brief run through of the forms and the costs We took the standard deduction, but she still charged us for all the itemized forms we weren’t able to use She told us we owed the IRS over $1500, which really sounded off when we had never owed before, but it was April 14th and we didn’t have much of a choice Our total bill to [redacted] was $461, and she didn’t even spell my husband’s name correctlyThis year (2014) there was no way I was going back to *** She was very condescending, and I wasn’t confident she had prepared our taxes correctly based on her assumptions of our tax situation I went to H&RB and their rep found simple errors, like not rounding up and not carrying over figures from the schedules/forms to the Not only that, but the deduction [redacted] said I could not take I indeed could take; I had even challenged her on this at the time, and she had quickly put me in my place with some hour rule that did not apply to my situation (I know now) I won't go into boring and complicated tax rules to justify why [redacted] made the wrong call, but rectifying the mistake put me in a lower tax bracket and got me $backAt the suggestion of my H&RB rep, I confronted [redacted] about the mistake in an email and asked her to amend the at no cost or refund my money for the forms she made errors on (less than $200, which I thought was very fair) She wrote back admitting to a “software error” and offering to amend at no charge because “mistakes happen.” However, she did not take responsibility for the larger error of projecting an unfavorable and inapplicable tax rule on my return Instead, and what I found most disturbing, was that she told me I had made some statements to her that she had documented in my written file - statements that I DID NOT and WOULD NOT have made because they were not true - and it was these statements she fabricated that justified why I was not allowed the deduction I was appalled that not only had she put words in my mouth, but she proceeded to document these falsehoods as “evidence in our files.” I let her know exactly where she misinterpreted the tax law, and asked her why I would have her amend my taxes when it was obvious she still did not understand the clearly-stated tax law that rules in my favor All I got was cricketsSo I filed a complaint with Revdex.com ***’s response started with the posturing statement that she would be talking to her lawyer if Revdex.com published my complaint on their website, then she proceeded to itemize mistruths about me, namely that I had falsely reported my tax situation to her and/or “changed [my] story” to get a better refund when I realized I could She made a big fuss listing her credentials and paper degrees (more posturing), and because I mentioned her home office reeked of cigarette smoke, she thought it necessary to point out her regular clients say her home office should be in “Homes and Gardens” magazine! We decided to go to Payless Tax last year (2013) to support small business and keep our money local. When I met with [redacted] and attempted to explain my tax situation, it was obvious she was not listening. She projected her assumptions of my situation without allowing me to talk it through with her. When I tried to give or get clarification, she responded curtly. I also thought it was important for me to ask about her rates upfront; I knew how much other tax prep services were in the area, and wanted to ensure she was not unreasonable. She told me it was a per-form cost, but she did not give me any figures. They claimed to be “Pay Less” so how bad could it be?
She asked me to put some receipts together and drop them off for her, which I did. She did spend a few minutes teaching me how to simplify my documentation process, and offered to review last year’s taxes for free. She found something minor from my 2012 tax return she wanted to amend (for a fee), and when I asked her if it would get me an additional refund, she answered with the statement, “I cannot force you to amend,” so I assume the answer was no. She never really sat down with me and explained the preparation, but did it on her own and then called us in to sign and did a brief run through of the forms and the costs. We took the standard deduction, but she still charged us for all the itemized forms we weren’t able to use. She told us we owed the IRS over $1500, which really sounded off when we had never owed before, but it was April 14th and we didn’t have much of a choice. Our total bill to [redacted] was $461, and she didn’t even spell my husband’s name correctly.
This year (2014) there was no way I was going back to [redacted]. She was very condescending, and I wasn’t confident she had prepared our taxes correctly based on her assumptions of our tax situation. I went to H&RB and their rep found simple errors, like not rounding up and not carrying over figures from the schedules/forms to the 1040. Not only that, but the deduction [redacted] said I could not take I indeed could take; I had even challenged her on this at the time, and she had quickly put me in my place with some 750 hour rule that did not apply to my situation (I know now). I won't go into boring and complicated tax rules to justify why [redacted] made the wrong call, but rectifying the mistake put me in a lower tax bracket and got me $600 back.
At the suggestion of my H&RB rep, I confronted [redacted] about the mistake in an email and asked her to amend the 2013 at no cost or refund my money for the forms she made errors on (less than $200, which I thought was very fair). She wrote back admitting to a “software error” and offering to amend at no charge because “mistakes happen.” However, she did not take responsibility for the larger error of projecting an unfavorable and inapplicable tax rule on my return. Instead, and what I found most disturbing, was that she told me I had made some statements to her that she had documented in my written file - statements that I DID NOT and WOULD NOT have made because they were not true - and it was these statements she fabricated that justified why I was not allowed the deduction. I was appalled that not only had she put words in my mouth, but she proceeded to document these falsehoods as “evidence in our files.” I let her know exactly where she misinterpreted the tax law, and asked her why I would have her amend my taxes when it was obvious she still did not understand the clearly-stated tax law that rules in my favor. All I got was crickets.
So I filed a complaint with Revdex.com. [redacted]’s response started with the posturing statement that she would be talking to her lawyer if Revdex.com published my complaint on their website, then she proceeded to itemize mistruths about me, namely that I had falsely reported my tax situation to her and/or “changed [my] story” to get a better refund when I realized I could. She made a big fuss listing her credentials and paper degrees (more posturing), and because I mentioned her home office reeked of cigarette smoke, she thought it necessary to point out her regular clients say her home office should be in “Homes and Gardens” magazine! She also said her business has not had a complaint since it opened 14 years ago, but I would guess that people around here are either too nice or too scared of [redacted] to say if they’ve had a bad experience.
All in all, I could tell it was going to get down to he said/she said, and I asked Revdex.com to withdraw my complaint; it is impossible to expect any kind of resolution when dealing with someone who uses lies to justify their unethical business practices and quality of character. This is only my opinion and personal experience, but other consumers beware of a tax "expert" who misinterprets tax law and a business owner with absolutely no integrity.
