Petland Terre Haute Reviews (2)

Petland is not a place I would recommend. They were deceitful during the sales process and when the purchase did not work out for us their refund policy forced us to work through a third party. A business that does this clearly has customer service shortcomings. I called the owner on 6 occasions and they never contacted me to work out a solution. We later researched and found that the puppy we returned was from a supplier that had been a shut down 'puppy mill' run by a convicted sex offender. Get a puppy from a reputable breeder or, better yet, from a shelter. But, do not give this company any consideration. We are out $1,111.13 and received nothing.

This is my story, as well as a warning to others. we bought a beautiful Morky Pup from Petland in terre haute, indiana. We explained to the manager that we had just lost our dog of 10 years. When we found out that the pup was going to cost 1400.00 we balked, of course. The selling point was that part of the price was the guarantee that if anything turned out to be wrong with the dog, he was insured and would be fixed or replaced. This was drilled into our brains, the entire time we were there. Of course we didn't anticipate ever having to use the insurance but it was nice to know considering the cost. We purchased the puppy for 1793.00 and some change! Goober(Morky) was sick the whole time....kennel cough and pneumonia, upon the first visit. A stay in the hospital; all within the first week. about a month of meds, shots and more meds followed. Petland took care of the initial cost but goober had to be placed on a second and third series of antibiotics, which is where our cost began. He was taken to the vet four separate times in the two months we had him. We did everything we were told to do and spared no expense when it came to Goobers well being. Goober had been coughing a little but was gaining weight and playing. The vet that Petland told us to go to said he was better; until he started hemorrhaging from his lungs and died....two months after we bought him.

We took him out to potty and he started having respiratory problems. We rushed him to the vet. On the way he stopped breathing so I gave him CPR, which helped but he was still in distress. The emergency vet worked on him for about 2 hours before he passed. He bled all over the car and me; from his mouth. The vet stated that he suspected he had viral influenza instead of pneumonia, which could look the same on the x ray. He stated that there was nothing we could do and he was a "ticking time bomb". In small dogs, 100 % mortality.

Petland wanted nothing to do with it. They told us to only contact the insurance co. Turns out that the insurance was not a given. We had to stay on them constantly. It was not an easy process; fortunately we kept every piece of paper!! After another two months and many calls, they called us and said that petland would "let us pick another puppy", which we didn't want. They do not recoup your expenses and they would only give us a credit of 1400.00, which means we are still out 400.00 plus all the medical expenses, heartache and trauma. We told them we wanted the money so that we could buy from a breeder instead of them but we were told "NO". According to the insurance company employee, Petland manager argued that none of the puppies at that time were sick and or died but the vet had told us that when goober was in the hospital, they had another puppy brought in that they did not think was gonna make it. There were other puppies we liked but some of them looked very sick, which is why we picked goober: he looked fine, but then I am not a vet.

My point in all of this is BEWARE of pet stores. Turns out after we researched Goobers breeder....we found that there is a class action lawsuit against the breeder, as well as Petland INC, across the US. The horror stories we read about the pups they sell are awful! Now, we don't want another dog from there but we also don't want them to get off scot free! We are contacting an attorney and seeing what our options are. I do have to say, my fault in this is believing what I was told and not researching anything until it was too late.
