Review: In early 2014 I contacted Pickup Outfitters to have them install a complete air ride suspension kit on my 1989 E-150 Disability Van to be paid for by a disabled persons foundation. The reason for this was that I was concerned about the height of my wheel chair lift and the chains that power it. They accepted the work, even though they should NOT have accepted it because of the twin I-beam suspension, and performed it. From the day I got my van back there was nothing but problems. First, the system continually leaked air and the bags deflated. I was told by Pickup Outfitters that the problem was the valves being too small. On their advice I purchased new higher pressure valves and had them installed at my expense. This did not fix the problems so I decided to have another shop look at the work and determine what the issue was. This other shop informed me that the work should never have been done in the first place and that on top of that the work performed was sub-par. The brackets used to hold the airbags are supposed to be 90 degree bends, but are now bent upwards with stress cracks developing. The drive shaft is rubbing on the undercarriage of the van. The shocks are dented from the tire and airbag hitting them, and the airlines were cut improperly leading to multiple leaks throughout the system. I took pictures and asked Pickup Outfitters to replace the stock suspension so that my vehicle is once agains safe to drive, as well as to refund the grant money they accepted and the money I paid to them to install the new valves. I have had no response, and am still waiting to hear from them.Desired Settlement: I would like for Pickup Outfitters to refund the grant money received from the Travis Roy Foundation to install the air ride suspension, as well as the money I paid out of pocket to have the new valves put in. I would also like to have the stock suspension put back onto the van at no cost to me, so that it is once again safe to drive.

Response:

Mr. [redacted] provided all brackets, valves, components, including bags and instruction to install the air suspension kit that he provided. The only parts we provided were airlines, brass fittings, and nuts and washers that were missing from the kit that he purchased elsewhere. To clarify the airbag kit was provided to Pickup Outfitters. Mr. [redacted] who assured that he had researched and found a kit online that would work on his van.Pickup outfittters has been installing air suspension kit for over 25 years. Not only for vans, motorhomes, commercial work trucks, big rig semi-trucks, and for show vehicles. Our familiarity and qualifications should not be in question as Mr. [redacted] has stated. The photos that we have reviewed, shows that the brackets including other components that he provided has cracked. Again, parts that were provided by Mr. [redacted].The first problem he encountered as we stated was the fact the valves were not strong enough. The Valves he provided for the size of his vehicle. The original valves he provided were rated at 120 PSI maximum. With a Twin - I-Beam suspension, you run the normal opening PIS at 110, maxing the capacity of the valves. Operating the valves at the almost maximum capacity causes the problem of losing air. When you hit pot holes, railroad tracks or just normal driving, and vehicle porpoising causes the air system to bleed off through the valve and the air system to lose pressure and change ride height. This caused suspension geometrics to change and the camber the tires close enough to rub the shocks. Again, the valves provided by Mr. [redacted].Now that the valves have been replaced, it leads up to the second problem. There is an air leak in the gauge that controls the front air bags. Gauges supplied by him. With the higher rated valves, you need better quality gauges than what he supplied. We told him that the gauges he provided were not recommended and that in our experience we have had problems wit them leaking. Therefore, we do not use that brand, we use only AVS. So with valves rated at a higher PSI, and gauges that are not rated, you will continue to have a leaking air system. Mr. [redacted] is fully aware of our recommendations and has elected not to follow them. There were not leaks or bleed off. The loss of pressure only occurs when driving. This is due to the poor quality of components Mr. [redacted] supplied for us to install. The third and final complaint by Mr. [redacted] is the brackets are cracking and bending. Mr. [redacted] supplied those brackets, he needs to contact the company he purchased them from. I did not supply them, so I can't warranty or repair them. If I did so, it would then shift liability to Pickup Outfitters. Also, if altered them from the original design, this could possibly void his parts warranty from the company Mr. [redacted] purchased them from. The parts were installed as per instructions provided.Mr. [redacted] indicated that the work performed was "Sub-Par". If our work is "Sub-Par", why do you trust it to be pout back to stock by Pickup Outfitters? If you truly believe we are not capable. You provided all components. We installed to specifications of the instructions that you provided. We are more than willing to put the van back to stock if that is what you would like. The job can be performed at our shop rate plus material and applicable taxes. With all that said, we have offered to change the gauges. We told him which gauges that he needed to purchase and he elected not to do so. As was told to him on several occasions, he needs to purchase the correct gauges that we have recommended. Mr. [redacted] has also neglected to inform the Bureau that we already provided 3 hours of labor at no charge to replace the under rated valves he originally supplied. Once he provides the correct gauges, we offered to replace them at no charge. Until then, I don't know what else we can do.Sincerely[redacted]
