Ponderosa Playschool Reviews (2)

Ponderosa Playschool looks legitimate and as if everything is set up well. The owners [redacted] and [redacted] say all the right things. But they should NOT BE TAKING CARE OF CHILDREN. Please read my experience, I do not want any other babies or children to be hurt by these sick people. Our son attended for 4 months, starting at 4 months old.I picked up our son on June, 3 2014, he was so red and swollen and looked horrible. He couldn't focus and was non-reactive/out-of-it. I asked [redacted], one of the owners/day care providers, how his day was, he replied, he was a little fussy after his nap and not alarmed by the way he looked. They would call me about any little thing; so I was shocked he wasn't alarmed by the way he looked. They watched him on average 40 hours a week and should be alarmed at his appearance he looked so horrible. I knew it was a lie and that he wasn't 'just a little fussy' I rushed home to talk to my husband. We took pictures and called them back to ask for more detail and it was the same story, 'he was just a little fussy after his nap'. That night he started a tick that looked like infantile spasms. We ended up at Phoenix Children's Hospital for a week; it wasn't seizures and was unexplained, doctors couldn't conclude it was a direct cause from they way he looked when we picked him up. We had a meeting and [redacted] and [redacted] said they would watch him like a hawk and hold him much more. Only 8 days later [redacted], the other daycare provider/owner attacked me about his crying. I was in shock at her anger and frustration at the moment he started to cry. I believe that [redacted] did hurt my son on June 3 and that was the cause of his episodes. [redacted] takes the older kids to the park, and [redacted] had times alone with my son and I believe that after her display of anger, frustration and lack of composure, set off by the sound of my 8 month old son crying, she is capable of harming a baby. The episodes my son had are believed to be dissociative seizures which are caused by severe emotional trauma. They have completely stopped now that we have stopped going to Ponderosa Playschool. Below is the letter outlining [redacted]s anger and inappropriateness:
I had an extremely upsetting experience on June 27, 2014. As I dropped off my son, he got upset and started to cry. [redacted] charged out of the kitchen and aggressively confronted me saying, 'This is what I've been talking about, we can't put him down without this happening! This is why I am asking you not to pick him up so much!' She then had [redacted], give my son back to me. He settled down within 10 seconds and then [redacted] took him back. She had me go into the hall (because another parent had walked in) to continue the abrasive conversation. She repeated that we should not hold our son so much. If he's diapered and fed he should be able to be put down to be left without melting down. That if this doesn't stop now it is going to be a big problem. [redacted] then said that even as she heads into the infant room with him he melts down. She said we are not doing things right at home and if this continues our son will need a nanny as they won't be able to meet his needs at Ponderosa Playschool. These are the concerns I have with Ponderosa Playschool and [redacted]:
1. As soon as our son began to cry [redacted] immediately attacked me. Her concern as his daycare provider was not to nurture and console our son, it was to point out he cries. He is only 8 months old and learning about separation anxiety. She was unable to compose herself at the sound of his crying; what were the repercussions when we were not present?
2. It was inappropriate to be attacked while I dropped off my son. A professional approach would be to schedule a parent/daycare provider meeting during a more appropriate time.
3. [redacted] pointed out that our son melts down when heading to the infant room. This is a huge red flag. He should feel safe and comfortable in the environment he's being cared for in. This behavior leads me to believe that he has had negative experiences in the infant room causing him to have emotional distress being in there. This also leads me to believe there has been neglectful behavior happening.
4. We have picked up our son multiple times when he is puffy and looks as if he has been crying a lot. When we have asked about this the response is 'he is going to cry here' or that he was ' just a little fussier than normal'. He does not cry when his needs are met, by nature he is happy. It is concerning that he cries so much at Ponderosa Playschool and he doesn't cry at home or when cared for by others who say he is an easy baby.
5. It is inappropriate for our daycare provider to tell us to not pick up our son when he is crying. This implies that at Ponderosa Playschool he is not held when upset and [redacted] does not want the responsibility or have the patience to take time to console an infant.
[redacted] and [redacted] are unfit to be childcare providers.
We have also filed a complaint with Arizona Department of Health Services.
