Upon responding to a call from the customer on September 22nd, regarding a claim that his attic was excessively hot, possibly due to a siding project recently contracted and completed with CVS, company owner, Karl R***, visited the customer's home on October 11th to inspect the siding
installation Upon, inspection it was realized that the customer had contracted a new roof to be installed on his home prior to the installation of siding contracted with CVS When questioned on the roof installation process, the customer admitted the roofing crew removed static vents and installed only a ridge vent during the roof installation According to GAF Ventilation Requirements, balanced ventilation is acquired only when the intake ventilation is equal to that of exhaust ventilation, and due to the removal of the static vents during the install, the balanced ventilation requirements are not met; thus leading to an overheated attic. In order to determine the proper amount of venting needed, calculation can be performed based on the square footage of the building using the 1/rule (See Exhibit A or follow the link provided:***The type of roof the customer has on his home (i.ea "hip roof") is often found to have an improper amount of linear venting per square foot of the home; requiring these homes to have attic fans and/or additional static vents(See Exhibit B).In order to provide the proper amount of intake ventilation, CVS vented his pre-existing soffit area (Exhibit C) prior to installing the new vented soffit panels, overlaid on the existing soffit panels for reasons such as the customer having very expensive gutters tied into his existing soffit which CVS could not remove The inability to remove the gutters was brought to the customer's attention and the customer agreed to additional venting in the new soffit in lieu of the removal of the existing soffit Upon further inspection, when viewing the ventilation system from the attic, it was discovered that insulation was pushed up against the soffit venting area without the required venting baffles, thus creating a static, negative air flow situation (i.enot enough exhaust ventilation) The needed remedies for the customer's situation are not with CVS or the soffit installed, but rather the following:Required attic soffit baffling needs installed, as well as, possibly a power attic fan ORThe additional static vents that were removed during the roof replacement need to be re-installed.When the customer did not agree with the inspection completed by the owner, MrR*** offered to have an independent heating and air conditioning company inspect the home for proper attic ventilation with the agreement that the party that had installed whatever product was deemed responsible for the overheating attic issue would also be responsible for the service of properly venting the attic The customer would not agree to the inspection to determine if his attic is properly vented
