*** *** *** Re: *** *** Canine Inspection Complaint March 21, Good Day ***, In response to the complaint letter sent out by *** *** March 21, 2017, I would like to submit the following for your review
I did speak with Mr*** following the inspection for bed bugs at his residence February 17, as discussed in his complaintMr*** had expressed his dissatisfaction with the service, stating he does not trust a dog can perform the task correctly and prefers taking a human’s advice over the dog Our bed bug canine Maggie has been successfully completing inspections for bed bugs for the last six yearsShe and the handler have been trained and certified by an independent company out of Florida conforming to *** standards- the National Entomology Scent Detection Canine AssociationMaggie is trained specifically to find and locate bed bugs proving consistently a 97%-99% accuracyIn addition, Maggie is trained for two hours daily (one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening) with live bugs placed in test tides to ensure consistency and accuracyUpon alerting for activity Maggie is rewarded with a treat There are several advantages utilizing a scent dog; the ability to get into confined spaces around beds, box springs, dressers, clutter, as well in dormitories, in theaters and motel roomsA scent dog is much more efficient in locating bed bugs than a humanA scent dog is the obvious choice when looking for drugs, bed bugs, explosives etcin out of sight areas, as a human can only depend on their eyesThey are not able to locate the insects in out of sight areas (in clothing, bedding, luggage, behind walls etc.) whereas a canine utilizes its sense of smell and is not limited to what it can see I have had several discussions with our handler Blaine W*** in regards to the issue and have copy of his response and findings below… Hi ***, As discussed, I did provide a canine inspection for this client on Feb 17th. The duplex was vacant at the time of inspectionDuring the pre-Inspection interview, I had inquired as to what had prompted the need for the inspectionI always like to know if and when there were any sightings, if there were recent visitors, if they had traveled, or introduced and new belongings or furniture to the residence*** had informed me that when the previous tenants were moving out, his son who was helping them move noticed bugs and dropping on one of the bedsThis caused concern, as it should, and *** called us to perform a Scent Canine inspectionDuring the inspection of the bedrooms, Maggie alerted on the walls in all bedroomsI discussed the results with *** and even allowed him to see where Maggie was alerting in each bedroom. There were no alerts in the living room or dining roomI discussed the available treatments with ***, either spray or heatAs he was renovating the duplex so he could re-rent, we did discuss him removing the baseboards to provide more access to sprayWith the number of alerts that Maggie indicated and in all bedrooms, there is no doubt that there was still the presence of either live bedbugs or viable eggs and further treatment was required*** stated that he was not happy with the confirmation of the presence of bed bugs, as there will be additional costs going forward to treat the pestsThanks, *** All locations where the dog alerted were consistent after a number of passes through the roomsThe problem areas were located in the walls approximately 30-60cm above the floorThere were no alerts at the baseboard level during the inspectionIn our experience, it is very common for bed bugs to harbour in walls in between the insulation and drywall; providing a safe area for harbourage of the pests In closing it is my opinion that everything was done correctly both by the handler and the canineThe client had contracted our services to identify and confirm that bed bugs were present in the residence at the time of the inspectionI do not feel a refund is warranted as the service we provided identified and confirmed bed bug activity in the residence I look forward to hearing back from you, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter Sincerely, Shane M***
