12.8px; font-family: arial, sans-serif; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-bottom-style: dashed; border-bottom-color: rgb(204, 204, 204);">Oct. 28th, at 10:30 a.m. They showed me their kitchen cabinet installation, counter tops, tile back splash, and laminate flooring. They also took me into their den and showed me the fireplace wall, where they had some electrical work completed. This was the person that had referred me to them.
The workmanship was terrible. The cabinets didn't line up with one another, they weren't connected properly, the tile was incomplete, and badly done, the floor didn't match with the original floor and so forth.
We agreed on what we were to do and signed a contract. They did not have the money to pay to have the work preformed. The only way they could pay for the work was if I financed it for them. They paid me $1,000 down payment, with $200 due on November the 15th, and $150 due on the 15th of each month until paid in full. Not ideal or what I would normally do but they needed help and I had no other way to help them.
We started work shortly after the contract was written and they would not agree to follow the contract in any manner. Third line of the contract was to remove the cabinets and reinstall them closing up the gaps between the cabinets.  They wanted me to tear out the rear of the sink cabinet and all of the plumbing and cut holes for the pipes to fit thru, replacing the entire back of the cabinet. The first contractor cut this out, not us, and it was not in our agreement and would cost several hundred dollars that they would not pay. He didn't glue the plumbing pipes but just pushed them into  place. As soon as we touched them they came apart in our hands with water coming out of the now open plumbing line. We were one foot away when this happened and were able to clamp the water pipe off until we could find the shutoff valve. We corrected the pipe (gluing it properly), checked the water, and wiped off everything that had gotten wet. For some reason she couldn't get the water back on later that night and we came back after six p.m. and got everything turned back on.
We were instructed to remove "all" of the tile back splash also not in our contract (see line 8 and 9). Our agreement was to remove the tile that was installed incorrectly and replace it with the same tile. Instead they wanted everything pulled down and replaced with a tin type of product. This meant fixing all of the damaged wall and doing 60% more work then had been agreed to do in our contract.
We were to remove the counter tops of the base cabinets and put them back in place on the now corrected cabinets. They changed their mind and wanted us to cut the tops to a different length. We also did this for them. I was there the entire time at this point and there was no damage, the tops looked great, and she was quite happy as was he. Once again this was a change in the contract, see lines 5,6, and 7. Later they sent me a picture showing that the top was damaged. It looked like it had either been hit with a hammer or that someone had tried to run a screw thru the top. Three of us were there are looked at the top and it was damage free when we left.
They ask us to install crown molding for the cabinets and showed us their single member crown which is standard for cabinets. They said that they knew that there was not enough crown and would have to order additional crown molding. After we set the wall cabinets for the single member crown molding he informed us that there was a second member to the crown molding and we had to remove the just installed wall cabinets and re-install them a second time. It was then that she insisted that we caulk all of the screw holes inside of the cabinets that contractor number one had done, then immediately got mad that we could not find an exact match in the color for work that should not have been done and was not part of our contract.
They would not pay for any of the additional work and continued to change the contract demanding that we now remove the entire kitchen floor instead of approx. 10 pieces that didn't match. Then she started in the den saying that they wanted instead of a "simple" wood mantle the entire wall in tile, once again at no additional change of price.
I  and a foreman were there for 8 hours, one foreman for 4 hours, and two foreman for 6 hours. The following morning when my foreman showed up to work, they would not allow him in the job saying there was a leak at the kitchen sink (of which I was never told by them) and that he didn't match the caulk properly inside of the cabinets.
I, at this time sent them a letter and said that they were in "Breach of Contract" because we had not been paid a second check that was due, that they would not abide by the contract, and that they would not allow us entry to their home. I figured up the hours worked on the home and sent them a check for $110 that we didn't use. This included not a dime in profit. He said he wanted it all returned plus a new kitchen sink cabinet. I asked was it not fair that I be paid for the work that I had done and was told NO that I should not be paid
anything. Then he stated that I lied to him and gave a false business address. All of which I have in his text messages.
I do not believe there can be resolution because they will not pay for anything additional and will not abide by what they agreed to do in the contract. They will not let us continue unless we do what they request that we do even when it is outside of the contract. Also, it is difficult to help them when they will only allow one person inside of their home. I am going over there tonight to see if we can work something out.
I went to their home with a foreman last night and he showed me what he was unhappy with on his cabinets. None of the items that he showed me were things that we had done. Then his wife started screaming that we had not installed the cabinets the way that Lowe's would have installed them. She would not stop screaming so I got his phone number and told him that I would call him the next day. I called him and told him that I wanted to bring this to a fair close and would be past reasonable on the money. He agreed that we had worked there 3 days and would not make us buy him a new cabinet. He insisted that we return all of his money. I reminded him that the cabinet was damaged by the other contractor and told him that I would pay him a total of $500 back with the signing of a document saying that all parties were held harmless and no one owed the other anything. He refused. I know of no other thing to do.
I hope that this helps you to understand the job and the contract better.

They also took me into their den and showed me the fireplace wall, where they had some electrical work completed. This was the person that had referred me to them.
