ProHealth Performed extra labs without my consent or knowledge and then charged me for it
I had lab work done at ProHealth Care Pewaukee in September as part of my annual physical which is required by my insurance provider. I specifically told the doctor that I wanted only the basic lab work that was necessary for the physical and that it was to be the same as I had last year. I was not told that any extra tests would be done on the blood that was drawn, nor did my doctor talk to me about needing any other tests. Not long after, I received a bill from ProHealth for diabetic and cholesterol panels that had been done which I had not asked for and had not discussed with the doctor. I am at no risk for diabetes, nor have I had any symptoms for it, and there was no reason that this test should have been done. I contacted my insurance and they told me these were not considered preventative tests and that is why they didn’t cover it. I then contacted ProHealth and was told that they needed up to 6 weeks for the nurse to review and get back to me. Finally, after 6 full weeks, the nurse called me and told me that everything was coded correctly and that it was my fault that the labs were done because I should have been aware of what lab tests they would be doing. I explained to her that I had told the doctor that I only wanted the basic labs and that I requested they do the same labs that I had last year. The nurse insisted that they DID give me the same labs as last year and that my insurance must have stopped accepting these labs and it was my responsibility to know what my insurance covered and know what labs the doctor was planning on performing. She then stated that I needed to call my insurance about why they didn't cover it. I called my insurance again and they confirmed that I did not have these labs last year and provided EOB’s proving it. I called ProHealth back and they told me the nurse had already reviewed and now there was nothing else they could do because once it was reviewed it could not be undone even if the information that she used to support her “review” was untrue. I do not feel that I should have to pay for a test that I was not informed of, that I did not need and that I would never have agreed to if they had asked prior to running the test on the blood that they had collected. I had no idea that they were going to be running extra tests on that blood without my consent, and I specifically stated that I only wanted the basic blood test that I had on last year’s physical which was covered by my insurance. I asked to speak to someone over the nurse and after much going back and forth they finally transferred me to someone else. That person kept interrupting me before I could even get out one sentence to explain what was going on. Finally, she told me she would have the nurse call me back. I still have not received any call back.
